Trivia

  • KO: 12pm, Sunday; League Match 30 of 38
  • 50th game in charge for Ange.
  • Celtic’s first league win at Livingston in 16 years! Livvie doing well and are currently fourth in the league.
  • Celtic remain three points ahead and now 11 goals better in goal difference to Sevco; Sevco won 1-0 with a 82nd min goal v Aberdeen at Ibrox (controversial as likely fouls etc before it).
  • Talk prior to the the game concerned about hoodoo at this ground with its plastic pitch. Blown away today. Their pitch was well worn out and in a poor state!
  • Set pieces still a bane! Livvie could have scored a few from them!
  • Start of the game things were dark on the pitch due to so much flares & smoke from the Celtic ends!
  • Full capacity sold out which created a big atmosphere and a lot of smoke! Great to see and a great advert for the game. Other clubs must take note! It benefits everyone and home fans more likely to want to come to this than a half empty stadium.
  • James Forrest has now scored in 13 consecutive league campaigns.
  • Scottish Cup game in 8 days time. So no league games for two weeks!
  • Former Celtic player, coach, assistant manager and interim manager Frank Connor has sadly passed away aged 86. RIP
  • Neil Lennon is favourite to take over the managerial role at Leyton Orient.
  • Clyde FC to terminate loan move for David Goodwillie who has been a controversial loanee from Raith Rovers (civil court ruled him to have committed rape). Discussion on this sensitive topic is left to a more appropriate forum than this one. Clyde’s ladies team cuts ties and then the stadium owners (NL council) ban Goodwillie from the ground!
  • Cricket: Former Australian Cricketer (and legend) Shane Warne dies of ‘suspected heart attack’, aged 52. RIP
  • Ukraine/Russia: conflict continues inc mass number of refugees. Boris Johnson has set out a six-point plan for responding to the crisis We must prepare for darker days ahead in Russian aggression, PM warns
  • Mma star Connor McGregor: “I do not speak in jest. I am exploring this, as I said. Celtic from Dermot Desmond, Manchester United from the Glaziers, and now the recently up for sale Chelsea football club. All being explored. A football franchise purchase is in my future make no mistake about it.”

Summary

“From my perspective, we have to focus on ourselves and if we’re convincing in our football then we’re hard to stop.”
Ange Postecoglou

“Winning is obviously important, but I think the manner of how we played the game was brilliant.”
Ange Postecoglou

“Really accomplished performance on the plastic from Celtic. Nir Bitton doesn’t get lots of praise but he was absolutely outstanding. Maeda worked tirelessly and got his reward with his goal. Jota was a real threat, excellent early on. Big three points.”
Chris Sutton

“I don’t think we deserved a lot more from the game but two big decisions went against us and they led to two goals.”
Livingston boss David Martindale

Twitter:

@bhoysanalytics: Great win with a lot of interesting caveats and tactical tweaks from Ange. That’s a very different performance from McGregor than the last time he started in that role, getting in the box much more. First time we have seen really good combination play on the left side

@bp: Excellent win. Ange deserves a lot of praise too. Went with some of the more experienced players. Again showing the pragmatism some would say he lacks. Massive win

@etims: is Our best performance on that dreadful surface for yrs. Ultimately goals chg games. Livvy had to open slightly & this allowed us more space to dominate. Tempo also good & mid balance far better. #NirBitton is an unsung hero. Barely put a foot wrong in mid this season #Celtic; Good to see Maeda, Jamesy & big Tam all contributing well. Ralston put in a stellar game. Jota played well and midfield had more controlled balance and tempo. We are still dreadfully weak with set pieces / long throws into our area…something to resolve this summer.

@dominic diamond: Special hail hail to Ange.  More than a few grumbles about that team selection when it was announced but the four most whinged about starters (Forrest, Maeda, Ralston and – in my own personal whingebox – Bitton) all had great games.  He got it spot on today.

@HP: Terrific finish from Jamesy for the third . Proving me and few others wrong with that performance today

@ttt: Livingston didn’t defend well from the front today, not as compact as Hibs or St. Mirren. Not unrelated, thought CCV and especially Starfelt a lot better bringing the ball out, committing forwards and beating the press. Notably less sideways dallying.

How Celtic vindicated Ange Postecoglou’s team selection by breaking Livingston hoodoo

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-vindicate-postecoglou-team-selection-with-3-1-win-at-livingston-3598750
There was simply no end of impressive facets to Celtic commanding 3-1 victory over Livingston that restored their three-point advantage at the top of the cinch Premiership.

At a ground that has appeared uniquely capable of giving them the fear, they were absolutely fearless. Their Almondvale bogey wasn’t just laid to rest. It was slayed. There can be no certainties about the destination of this title even with just eight games remaining when two of these encounters will pit the Glasgow challengers against one another. Yet, the driven, purposeful manner Ange Postecoglou’s men set about ending a run of five games without a win at a venue Celtic had not tasted success at since 2007 suggests they won’t be dislodged from the summit easily.

Their assignment in West Lothian appeared the ultimate test of Celtic’s title credentials. David Martindale’s team, with the opportunity to return to fourth place, have been one of the form teams in the country; never mind a club that has seemed to put the hex on the Parkhead side whenever they host them on their plastic pitch.

Yet, aside from a spell of pressure subsequent to Andrew Shinnie’s close-range finish that followed 56th minute throw-in – a quickfire response to Celtic going three-up through James Forrest – the home side could not live with the league leaders.

A first win for Postecoglou over Livingston at his third attempt didn’t just represent atonement for the 1-0 defeat in September at the same venue that has given way to a 28-game domestic unbeaten run for Celtic. It served as vindication – both for the Australian and those he entrusted to end the hoodoo. Much has rightly been made of the wholesale retooling of the Celtic squad that Postecolgou has presided over. Yet, as his team rediscovered the zest and assurance that has been in short supply since their thumpings of Rangers and Motherwell a month ago, the old guard was to the fore.

It is unusual to see a Celtic starting XI that features five players not recruited since the summer. But astutely recognising the contributions made by Nir Bitton, Tom Rogic and Forrest as substitutes in the midweek victory over St Mirren he started all three in a line-up that also boasted pre-Postecoglou Celtic performers Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston. All delivered, as did Daizen Maeda. A player who, as with Forrest, the Australian had backed this week in the face of grumbles over their form.

Celtic’s character shone through in shaking off a penalty miss from Callum McGregor, who thumped the post in the 13th minute from a spot-kick awarded for a Jack Fitzwater handball. Within four minutes, they had the lead when a corner that shouldn’t have been given led to a Jota delivery and a Carl Starfelt glancing header that drew a smart save from Max Stryjek, only for Maeda to smash in from point-blank range.

Celtic were then in total control, though survived a scare when Ayo Obileye looped a header on to the bar just before the interval. It proved really their only one of the afternoon courtesy of them making it two 28 seconds of the restart that they made their dominance count when a Ralston cross from the right was turned into his own goal by Nicky Devlin.

The no contest moment then arrived 10 minutes later, and was of huge significance to Forrest, who latched on to a defensive splitting pass and netted from a tight angle on the left. His first league goal of the campaign, it means he is now among only a handful of players to score in 13 consecutive top flight campaigns in the Premier era.

Celtic opener against Livingston ‘shouldn’t have been a goal’ as referee blunder highlighted

Celtic’s opener against Livingston should not have happened after match officials blundered in awarding the corner kick which led to the goal, according to Sky Sports pundits.

Daizen Maeda nodded home from close range on 17 minutes after a corner was met by Carl Starfelt and parried into his path by Livingston goalkeeper Max Stryjek.

However, footage has shown that the set piece which led to the goal was awarded incorrectly after the ball came off Celtic’s Anthony Ralston last, with a touch from Livingston’s Jason Holt coming after the ball had already crossed the touchline.

Former Dundee boss James McPake, performing pundit duties for Sky Sports, said: “There’s no doubt about it.

“I don’t know if we can blame [referee] Nick Walsh for it, but I certianly think the assistant referee on this side of the pitch had to see that.

“It’s not a corner, but I also do believe … Livi have got to deal with the set play better.

“It’s good movement, it’s good delivery, but it’s not a corner and it shouldn’t have been a goal.”

Celtic missed a penalty before Maeda’s opener with captain Callum McGregor striking his effort against the post after Livingston defender Jack Fitzwater had been penalised for handball.

The Hoops doubled their lead at the start of the second half through a Nicky Devlin own goal, before James Forrest added a third in the 55th minute.

Livingston pulled one back through Andy Shinnie a minute later but Celtic comfrotably held onto to a 3-1 victory.

Celtic’s James Forrest celebrates
James Forrest put Celtic 3-0 ahead to all but end Livingston’s hopes

Celtic will “be a hard team to stop” after convincingly overcoming their nemesis Livingston to restore their three-point Scottish Premiership lead, says manager Ange Postecoglou.

Captain Callum McGregor missed a penalty before Daizen Maeda headed in the opener from a disputed corner.

A Nicky Devlin own goal and James Forrest’s fine finish made it 3-0.

And Andrew Shinnie’s close-range reply could not deny Celtic a first win at Tony Macaroni Arena since 2007.

“Great to win because obviously it’s a difficult place to come and get three points,” Postecoglou said as his side responded to reigning champions Rangers’ win over Aberdeen on Saturday in his 50th game in charge.

“We’ve got to keep getting stronger and I think we are. We’re in a good space to keep getting stronger to the end.”

While admitting it was a thoroughly deserved win for the clinical and dominant visitors, Livingston manager David Martindale suggested referee Nick Walsh got decisions wrong in the lead up to two Celtic goals as his side passed up a chance to reclaim fourth spot from Hibernian.

Reaction & as it happened

With Livingston having taken 17 points since the winter break – a haul bettered only by Celtic – this was very much a game between the Premiership’s two form sides.

It looked like Livingston might again spring a surprise as they went close to taking a sixth-minute lead, but Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart stretched out a big hand to parry clear when Ayo Obileye half-volleyed a corner from a difficult angle at the far post.

Celtic responded by dominating possession and took the lead following two minutes of controversy.

When Maeda’s attempted cut-back inside the six-yard box struck Jack Fitzwater’s trailing arm, the Livingston centre-half appeared to be unfortunate to concede a penalty kick.

Celtic captain Callum McGregor fired the spot-kick against the outside of a post, but the breakthrough was only momentarily prevented.

Anthony Ralston won a corner when the ball appeared to last come off the Celtic right-back’s arm and, although Max Sryjek parried superbly from Carl Starfelt’s header from Jota’s delivery, Maeda was lurking at the back post to provide the vital touch.

It was Celtic’s first goal in three meetings with Livingston this season – and it set them on their way to their first win over Martindale’s side.

Although Celtic were now in almost total control, Livingston ought to have gone in at the break level after Alan Forrest’s in-swinging free-kick found Obileye unmarked 10 yards out. However, the defender sent his header crashing off the crossbar.

Livingston’s dismay was doubled seconds after the break as Ralston’s cross into the six-yard box deflected off Obileye’s toe, on to fellow defender Devlin’s chest and over the line.

Alan Forrest’s form had outshone that of brother James in recent weeks, but the Celtic winger not only kept his younger sibling quiet in their one-to-one exchanges but was the one on the scoresheet on this occasion, racing through to fire low past Stryjek to make it a 13th consecutive season with a top-flight goal.

Shinnie had scored Livingston’s winner when Celtic visited in September, but by the time he stabbed home in a crowded goalmouth from a throw-in, the visitors were well on their way to stretching their unbeaten domestic run to 29 games since then.
Man of the match – Jota
Celtic winger Jota and manager Ange Postecoglou
Jota was not so prominent after the break, but the on-loan Benfica winger’s clever, incisive runs put Livingston on the back foot from the off
What did we learn?

Given their record against Celtic – and having only lost once in their previous nine home games – Livingston will no doubt be disappointed to not only have suffered defeat but conceded three goals in the process.

However, Martindale will stress that they still emerge from the weekend well placed to secure a top-six finish and qualify for European football.

The Livingston manager had suggested prior to kick-off that Postecoglou’s side are now a different beast from the one that lost in West Lothian in September and so it proved against the only top-flight side he had yet to beat.

Celtic travelled east having only won twice in their last five outings, but two of those were defeats by Bodo/Glimt in the Conference League, and the Australian’s side once again showed that they will take some stopping as they look to win the title in his first season in charge.
What they said

Livingston manager David Martindale: “I think Celtic were very good and very clinical. I don’t think we deserved much more from the game, but with the two decisions leading to goals you feel a little hard done-by.

“You need a wee bit of the luck to go your way when your playing either of the Old Firm and there’s a refereeing decision that leads to the corner – I think it’s our bye-kick and the linesman and fourth official told the referee it was a bye-kick.

“On the second goal, I think there’s a hand ball from Tom Rogic in the middle of the park and we don’t get that decision.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I think our performance was excellent. We started the game very well, played at a high tempo and put them under a lot of pressure when they had the ball and created a lot of chances and scored good goals.

“Our defensive work over the last couple of months has been outstanding and again I thought it was key.”
