  • Injuries for Celtic: Giakoumakis out. Kyogo on bench but off pace when he came on.
  • First time in Scottish Cup history that Hearts, Hibs, Celtic and Sevco have featured in the semi-final stage at the same time.  Two big city derbies.

  • Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels’ apologised after his claim that female teams concede goals in clusters because they are “more emotional than men” was labelled “very unhelpful”.

Summary

“Every cup game you play, if you want to progress you’ve got to perform on the day and you’ve got to get the job done on the day.”
“The bigger the game the bigger the opportunity.”
Ange Postecoglou pre-match

Chris Sutton:
TheRangers the better team today and deserved to win. Celtic were poor today ,missed big George and his physicality to get the team up the pitch. Bigger picture is that Ange Postecoglou has done a great job this season and the team need one big final push to win the league
Celtic were poor but Bobby Madden turned in one of the worst refereeing performances I’ve seen in Scotland for a long time… and that’s saying something!!!

Bobby Madden(Referee) performance today:

  • David Turnbull took a free-kick after he had been barged into by Scott Arfield. All of the players on the park recognise that it is a free kick to Celtic, on the touchline Giovanni van Bronckhorst urges his players back into defensive positions as Turnbull fires a promising diagonal pass to Jota. Suddenly Madden decided to blow his whistle, while everyone on the park had positioned themselves for a Celtic free kick the match referee pulled play back and restarted with a free kick for Sevco, and the chance to run down a few more precious minutes.
  • Has anyone ever seen a referee award an uncontested drop ball at the edge of an opposition box?!
  • Rogic got dragged back by Bassey and Bassey got the free kick!!!
  • The potential Celtic penalty he never gave? He saw a handball but marked it 4 yards outside the box from where Barisic got hit? VAR potentially could have given it BUT in fairness likely a correct decision when on field with no VAR.
  • Not sending off Lundstrum! Enough opportunities to do so! Four incidents worthy of a yellow card at least.
  • Let Bassey foul with impunity;
  • Roofe borderline red card
  • Aribo booked then let off with 2 further bookable offences

Graham Spiers (twitter):
I thought Rangers were terrific today at Hampden: strong, skilful, carrying threat. I hear debate about ref Bobby Madden but this was a deserved win. Off the pitch…my God, this Rangers songbook. How the hell do we drag these people into the 21st century? Embarrassing.

Twitter:

@bhoysanalytics: Awful half for Celtic. Too much imbalance across the attack and midfield. Loss in pressing and energy in the side clear to see. Only 1 clear cut chance in the game with CCVRangers were pretty much the exact same as the ibrox game. Crossing volume and long ball approach for offenceNo GG meant we lost a lot of pressing up top and couldn’t keep territory as well. Loss in mobility needed supplemented.

@frjeb: Huns should have been down to 9 men, Lundstram not picking up at least 4 yellows is some of Madden’s best work so far. Aribo should have been off too.

@hhistory: Celtic poor today, never at any point imposed ourselves on the game. The CCV shot that hits the bar (which would have made it 2-0) took a lot of spirit out the team. Heads went down after that.17 games without losing at Hampden, hard to do it forever. Still…

@agentscotland: You get what you deserve in these games, Rangers turned up from the first minute and apart from a spell in the second half after O’Riley came on, a spell that Celtic could’ve actually finished it, Rangers were the better team for most of the game.

@fitzy0u7: Bobby Madden got the result he wanted, absolutely killed the game with his decision making. Missed yellow cards, gave fouls that never where & let offsides go. Bobby Madden got the result he wanted.

@HP: Three games to win the league , possibly two. That’s all that matters now. Head down and get on with it .

That was sore one but not enough to derail Celtic’s season
By Niall J 18 April, 2022 No Comments
https://thecelticstar.com/that-was-sore-one-but-not-enough-to-derail-celtics-season/

There is no doubt a defeat like yesterday’s Scottish Cup semi-final stings. Celtic as a team simply were unable to impose their style of play for long enough periods in the game to really gain any real traction in the match, and in a game won and lost in a midfield battle, the physicality and intensity theRangers brought to the game edged a key area in their favour and ultimately it was enough to eventually progress from what was a very close encounter.

Yet the baby doesn’t need to go out with that bathwater here, Celtic remain in a good place.

In a season many assumed would be transitional to have one trophy already bagged, have a six-point advantage in a league title race with five games to go, and a goal difference that means the advantage is the equivalent of seven points, means we are in an incredible and scarcely believable position considering where this club stood last summer. Losing a Scottish Cup semi-final, whilst disappointing, won’t derail the ultimate goal this season of winning back the league title.

Yesterday’s defeat – with a great deal of mitigating circumstances surrounding it – need not and will not result in any self-doubt emerging that will impact the course of the title race. After all, despite Celtic not quite hitting the heights we know we are capable of, it still took extra time for Celtic to be turned over, and prior to that Ange Postecoglou and his players had not tasted defeat in a domestic game since Livingston on 19 September. That momentum will not be lost by a defeat that took extra-time to see us off despite not being anywhere near our best yesterday.
READ THIS…Celtic will need to reset and refocus after that abject performance

As a collective the support, management and players simply have to brush this one off and get back to taking care of business, as we have done since September. And there is no reason to assume we can’t if we all stick together, avoid undue hysteria and regain focus on what we can still control.

As a one-off game yesterday’s defeat was a sore one, yet defensively Celtic as a unit performed well. From Joe Hart up to Callum McGregor at the base of the midfield the team held firm, this despite a referee who even the opposition would have to admit interpreted the laws of the game questionably to say the least.

Celtic faced a physical opponent, but on too many occasions the legality of their approach should have been stopped at source if the referee had been willing to do so. Instead, Bobby Madden allowed John Lundstram in particular, but also Ryan Jack and others to blur the lines of legality.

Yet bar Callum McGregor – who certainly didn’t deserve to be on the losing side such yesterday – Celtic were far too passive in central midfield. The game as both an attacking force and defensive assistance to McGregor passed Tom Rogic by. Meanwhile Reo Hatate as much as he tracked up and down the Hampden pitch admirably isn’t much of a physical presence in a midfield battle where there is no protection from a referee and Celtic as a result were overpowered.
READ THIS…“Today was awful, horrible in all its intensity,” David Potter on Celtic’s poor Hampden showing

Celtic weren’t helped by losing Maeda’s pressing from wide areas as he took up the central striker role, and Jota and Abada were both guilty of not pressing sufficiently from the front in support of the Japanese striker. Whilst in possession the wide players were also too often wasteful, giving up cheap possession, and in turn the already creaking central midfield faced further counter attacking pressure.

The forward players did not have a good game and in a team who defend from the front, bar Maeda’s industry, Celtic brought on much of their own troubles.

Yet despite this Celtic took the lead through Greg Taylor, and had Cameron Carter-Vickers had a touch more composure when lifting his shot off the crossbar rather than hitting the gaping goal, Celtic in all likelihood would have won this game.

However, the wheels came off with theRangers equaliser and the loss of both Taylor and Juranovic to injury. With Stephen Welsh forced into a full back role and Anthony Ralston to left back, a team reliant on inverted full backs for extra midfield protection were hanging on for penalties. They didn’t quite make it.

The loss of the winning goal was entirely self-inflicted, as Welsh in an unnatural position needed help when theRangers overlapped. He should have got it from the fresh legs of James Forrest, but the Celtic winger looked as leggy as those who played 120 minutes and he failed to offer his young teammate the protection he needed. From the resultant delivery Celtic still had strength in numbers but couldn’t defend the cross ball, and with that goal Celtic were out.

Yet Celtic can take a lot of positives from this game. What could go wrong did go wrong as luck deserted us. We faced a referee who should have a lot of explaining to do for an inconsistent performance and who appeared to stop and start the game to give himself a breather, or was it to break up Celtic attacking momentum? I’ll let you be the judge of that.

And despite it all Celtic, had Carter-Vickers been a touch luckier or composed in front of goal would have won this game, despite all the slings and arrows of misfortune.

And it’s for those reasons Celtic as a collective have to take stock today. We have to realise how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.

In a transitional season where we possibly had no right to believe we’d have been competing for a League Title never mind a Treble, we need to recognise how far we’ve come and why one extra-time domestic defeat since September should not bring about any self-doubt.

The players and Ange Postecoglou have done everything and more we could have expected of them this season. If they go about their work in the same way over that last five games of the season, Celtic will regain the league title and the disappointment of a Scottish Cup semi-final will soon be forgotten.

To do that, they will need all of our support and a belief in the manager’s process that has got us to this point. There is no doubt they all have earned an unwavering belief in that very philosophy. One cup defeat with a great deal of mitigating circumstances shouldn’t derail any of that.

Ange Postecoglou admits Celtic face title ‘challenge’ after Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has conceded his team now face a “challenge” to ensure their haemorraging of a treble tilt courtesy of their Scottish Cup semi-final derby loss doesn’t bleed over into their quest for the title.

Celtic at times seemed inhibited and out-of-sorts in going down 2-1 in extra-time to a Rangers many had wrongly assumed could be there for the taking following their requirement to push themselves to the max over two hours to progress to the Europa League last four on Thursday evening.

And Postecoglou didn’t disagree afterwards that the letdown of a first defeat at Hampden in 18 ties for the club and a first domestic loss in seven months and 34 games will demand Celtic show the backbone that has allowed them to establish a six-point lead in the cinch Premiership, despite losing three of their first six games. The first of the five post-split fixtures that will take them to Dingwall next Sunday now becomes a monumental encounter on that front.

“We have had to be resilient all year and this is another challenge for us,” said the Celtic manager. “We are disappointed we didn’t get to another final, we are disappointed for our fans. But irrespective of what happened today we have five games to concentrate on winning the league, starting next week. We need to make sure that we use this disappointment to fuel our endeavours in this next series of games.”

The Australian sought to sidestep the surprise inability to capitalise in extra-time on the fact that Rangers had come right off a similarly punishing shift in contrast to Celtic having a full nine days to prepare for the two clubs’ Hampden showdown.

“I wouldn’t make too much of that stuff,” he said, Celtic appearing to lose heart after a Carl Starfelt own goal gave Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men a 2-1 advantage in 124 minutes. Celtic missing the opportunity to go two goals up when Cameron Carter-Vickers cracked the crossbar in the 69th minute – nine minutes before Scott Arfield restored parity. “At the end of the day, it’s two teams giving everything right until the final minute. There’s so much at stake. The 28, 29, 30 players that came on today gave everything they could. It’s what you expect in this kind of game.”

Rangers defeat Celtic at Hampden to set up Scottish Cup final against Hearts
Rangers produced a display of extraordinary application and valour to prevail against Celtic over 120 minutes in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden.

Belying their exertions over two hours against Braga three days earlier, the Ibrox men dug deeper than crater to overcome the loss of a 64th minute Greg Taylor to find the means to deliver a first domestic defeat in 34 games on Ange Postecoglou’s side. And end prospects for a fifth domestic treble in six seasons for Celtic.

Perhaps the defining moment of the match arrived in the moments after Celtic’s opener when Hoops defender Cameron Carter-Vickers contrived to hit the crossbar from close range when it seemed easier to score.

But the unwillingness of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men to accept their fate just as Celtic had appeared ready to take control of an encounter they were second best in to the Ibrox side for much of the first hour was rewarded with an equaliser 12 minutes from time. It ensued from Kemar Roofe getting a touch to a slung-over cross from James Tavernier that set up substitute Scott Arfield to conjure up a ferocious fizzing finish.

In extra-time fortune favoured the bravery shown by Rangers when a Calvin Bassey cross was knocked past his own keeper by Carl Starfelt under-pressure from Fashion Sakala with 124 minutes on the clock. In truth, it was no more than Rangers deserved against an unusually disjointed Celtic, and has given them a final chance against Hearts in which they will start firm favourites to end their 13-year wait for domestic cup success.

Indeed, in the normal period, it was Postecoglou’s men who appeared weary and leaden, as Rangers had the snap in midfield despite how much their Europa League semi-final earning success on Thursday must have taken out of them. It did not stop them exhibiting more zip and cohesion than their rested rivals.

Across a tense opening half, Celtic’s resolute defending accounted for the Ibrox’s side greater possession and drive failing to produce any real near things – save for the excellent John Lundstrum shuddering the upright with a curling drive five minutes from the interval.

Celtic brought on Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O’Riley for Liel Abada and Tom Rogic at half-time in a bid to shift the momentum. And it seemed it would when O’Riley played a free-kick to Callum McGregor, whose forward pass found the unlikely threat Greg Taylor in the box. After bringing the ball under control, the left-back clipped a shot that grazed Calvin Bassey on its way to squeezing in at John McLaughlin’s near post. It appeared potentially decisive. Rangers, though, simply did not allow that to be the case.

Scott Arfield equalises for Rangers
Scott Arfield’s goal 12 minutes from time levelled the tie and allowed Rangers to go on and win

Rangers will play Hearts in the final of the Scottish Cup on 21 May after coming from behind to beat Celtic in extra time of a relentless and pulsating Old Firm derby.

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt turned Calvin Bassey’s cross into his own net with five minutes of extra time left to send the blue end of Hampden wild.

It sealed an impressive turnaround for the Ibrox side, who fell behind to Greg Taylor’s goal in the second half before Scott Arfield equalised, and a chance at a first domestic cup for 11 years.

The rousing comeback also ends Celtic’s hopes of a fifth domestic treble in six seasons, having already won the League Cup this season and with a six-point lead in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers’ performance in stopping their rivals from making it 19 straight wins at Scotland’s national stadium was especially impressive given they were taken to extra time on Thursday in their Europa League quarter-final against Braga.

‘What might Rangers’ cup win do to title race?’
Reaction & as it happened

With Hampden a cauldron of colour and noise, it was no surprise the game was filled with crunching tackles, mistakes, and nerve-shredding tension.

When the smoke which billowed from the pre-match pyrotechnics finally cleared, the action started and never really let up. Despite their European exploits, Rangers looked fresh as they shut down Celtic’s midfield and hampered their build up.

Joe Aribo had two headed chances to give them a deserved lead, and John Lundstram’s curling effort cracked a post as they came close to adding the gloss to a disciplined, if frantic, first period.

But Celtic, who have made Hampden their fortress in the last decade, came back in the second half when Callum McGregor’s quick free quick caught out Rangers, and Taylor fired beyond Jon McLaughlin with the help of a deflection off Bassey.

On an afternoon when Ange Postecoglou’s side looked less sure of themselves, they might have been 2-0 up and on course for the final had Cameron Carter-Vickers’ close-range shot not cannoned off the bar.

But instead Arfield swept home the equaliser from James Tavernier’s cross with 12 minutes left, and from there it was Rangers who looked the side with more energy and intent heading into extra time, dismissing any notion they would fade.

Tavernier and Fashion Sakala were denied by Joe Hart in extra time, before some quick thinking by Glen Kamara released Bassey down the left, and his low delivery was prodded by Starfelt beyond his own goalkeeper under pressure from Sakala.

The explosion of noise in the Rangers end was something to behold as their decade-long pain in the cups comes another step closer to ending after a game where they had to dig incredibly deep to get the job done.

What did we learn?

After back-to-back derby defeats in 2022, Rangers ceded the league lead to Celtic and there was a general malaise about their domestic form, in stark contrast to their Europa League run, which will continue in the semi-finals against RB Leizpig.

But to get off the floor here, especially given they had won just two of their last 11 games at Hampden, with 120 minutes already in the legs from three days prior, was a hugely impressive feat.

All of the substitutes made a huge contribution. Steven Davis brought calm amid the storm and tired legs, Kamara’s quick thinking set up the goal, while Arfield scored and Sakala was the man who forced the winner.

That was in contrast to Celtic, who seemed to suffer when Stephen Welsh and Anthony Ralston came on in the full-back positions.

Matt O’Riley did make a difference, but overall this was a reminder there is work to do with their squad building. They also looked short of ideas when Rangers were able to shut them down for long spells.

They’ll need to quickly refocus with another derby to come in the league to make sure they press home their league advantage and end the season with the league title.
What they said

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I don’t think any player from either side left that pitch without giving everything they had. Games like these are decided on moments and unfortunately it didn’t happen for us.

“You’ve got to understand that, take that disappointment and fuel it for future endeavours. We’ve had a lot of setbacks this year, we’ve just overcome them really well and really quickly. We’ve got five games now to become champions.”

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst: “To play extra-time two times in four days… the players were magnificent. We had to dig deep and we did it as a team. We’re proud that we’re in the final.

“It’s important to be in the final but the most important thing is to win the final. We haven’t won anything yet. We want to achieve something and the belief is there that we can win the cup.”
What’s next?

Celtic will look to re-affirm their advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership next Sunday when they face Ross County in Dingwall (14:30 BST).

Rangers are scheduled to be away to Motherwell earlier in the day (12:00), but have asked for that game to be brought forward to the Saturday.
