Trivia

  • KO: 14:30; Sunday on Sky TV; League match 34 of 38; first post-split match
  • Back to the league with Celtic looking to wrap up the League and League Cup double, 3 wins needed. This win means two from last four games.
  • Sevco won 3-1 day before. Celtic play Sevco next Sunday. So Celtic remain 6pts in front and 19 goal difference advantage.
  • Giakoumakis returns after one week of injury, but Kyogo starts instead.
  • Ross County’s first home defeat since the added-time earned 2-1 win from Postecoglou’s men in their last visit. So this is a big victory for Celtic.
  • Biggest match in Scotland this weekend was actually Kilmarnock v Arbroath in the second tier as Arbroath challenging to reach the top tier with their amateur side, amazing fairytale story. Match live on BBC on Friday night past. But Killie won 2-1 to take the title, and Arbroath will have to try via the play-offs for promotion.
  • Juranovic out for a few weeks due to injury from last Sunday. Likely for rest of season.
  • Reo Hatate has admitted to both ‘emotional and physical fatigue’ when speaking to Japanese publication Sportiva. He’s had little rest over past year.
  • VAR voted in by SPFL clubs as technology set to be introduced to Scottish Premiership. After the disgraceful performance by referee Madden in last Sundays game v Sevco it’s a little ironic. Only one voted against! Will be introduced next season after World Cup in December! No goal line technology. VAR  cost of £1.2m per season is to be met by the 12 clubs on a sliding scale.
  • Legendary rap artist Snoop Dogg ‘planning epic player party’ if Celtic crowned Scottish champions. He said if Celtic win the league, he will get on a plane to Scotland and fork out for a night that the players will never forget.
  • Hibs confirm that their manager (and ex Celt) Shaun Maloney has departed the Club having only been there a short time.
  • Reports: Hibs are weighing up a third-attempt to convince John Kennedy to take on the managerial role. Ross County manager Malky Mckay reportedly key target for the job.
  • Boli Bolingoli has been training alone in Belgium. He posted on his Instagram account a video clip of himself running at Maluka Football Training Centre in Antwerp. The fact that he is training alone and not even in Scotland suggests that his time at Celtic is coming to an end.
  • Boris Johnson becomes the first PM to be investigated by the Commons Privileges Committee into whether he misled MPs over partygate or not
  • Scottish Conservatives dropped an election candidate after he described a catholic school as a “bigot factory” on a Sevco forum.
  • France: Emmanuel Macron is set to be reelected president of France. The projections on Sunday showed Macron winning about 58% of the vote, against 42% for the far right Le Pen

Summary

“Every competition is an opportunity to be successful. For us at the moment we’ve won one trophy this year. Obviously our main goal this year was to become (league) champions, and that’s still in our hands. We’ve got five games to do that and that’s what we’ve got to focus on.”
Ange Postecoglou pre match

“We know what’s at stake so we need to bounce back against Ross County. With football, you have to move your focus to the next game and that’s what we’ve done.”
Greg Taylor pre match

Ange:  “I’m really pleased. It’s a difficult place to come and not many teams have beaten them here.

On the match, Ange Postecoglou:  “Should have put them away in 1st half. They are a hard team to break down. They have threats from set plays. Kyogo is a helluva player. Great to have him back. Jota was excellent today. We were disappointed last week but it didn’t stop our momentum” #Celtic

@agentscotland : Ross County 0-2 CelticBrilliant performance from Celtic after the last week’s disappointment, if it ended 4/5-0 no-one would’ve had any complaints but they had to deal with a lot of tension in that second half before restoring their six point lead, another game ticked off.

@Hp: I’ll keep repeating it. Another win , another 3 points and a game less to play. Beautiful Sunday

Chris Sutton: Much nonsense been written about Celtic this week after 1 defeat in 30+ games domestically! Big win away on an ok pitch

Twitter:

DD: One of the toughest post-split games won! Ralston and Taylor both superb down the flanks, CCV impassible yet again, Kyogo took goal well but should have had more. Jota MOTM for me. Superb crosses, smart passing, great skill and ruthless determination. #CelticFC #ROSCEL

Liam Kelly: We’re on the top of the league looking down on the Rangers and the only explanation I can find is the form we have found since ange has been around it has put us at the top of the league

Misc: Jota hugging a policeman is the thing you didn’t know you were going to see today

How Celtic effectively secured the title ahead of Rangers showdown next week

So authoritative, assured and anxiety-free did Celtic prove in their 2-0 victory over Ross County at Dingwall, it was almost as if the performance was a riposte.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/how-celtic-effectively-secured-the-title-ahead-of-rangers-showdown-next-week-3666582

Pressure, what pressure, Ange Postecolgou’s men seemed to be scoffing as they strolled to three points that put them – essentially – within a derby victory next week of rubber-stamping their title success.

In truth, though, as soon as a Jota 87th minute strike made certain of the win in the Highlands, real doubts about the destination of the cinch Premiership were effectively removed. The travelling support, and the posse of players led by the Portuguese winger that let loose on the most almighty celebrations, certainly betrayed thinking as much. “Champions again oh-way, oh-way” was the chant that rang out, and there will be no denying their club a 10th title in 11 years.

Even with their hosting of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side next week, a six-point lead and a 19-goal difference superiority, makes Celtic unassailable across the final four games. Now unbeaten in 28 top flight encounters, they have won 24 of these, with only three draws since October. If you do the arithmetic, then, it means they would require to drop more points in the next three weeks than they have in the previous seven months to be dislodged from the summit. There is more chance of Boris Johnston having a crisis of conscience – or in fact simply revealing he actually possesses a conscience – than that happening.

There was always one ginormous flaw in the contention floated by some last week that Celtic’s loss of a nothing-in-it Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers could precipitate a title collapse: And that was that it seemed to overlook the fact that the Europa League semi-finalists from down Govan way operate on a different level from every club – beyond them – Postecoglou’s men will face in the championship run-in.

The evidence of that was there for all to see from the early minutes at Dingwall. County may have excelled in forcing their way into the top six, but they couldn’t lay a glove on visitors that were so unsettled and rumbled-up at Hampden the previous weekend. From those earliest exchanges, an opening goal was in the post. And it wasn’t any great surprise that when it arrived 12 minutes in, it should be the returning Kyogo Furuhashi that bagged it. Celtic have missed his double-act with Jota in the four months since the Japanese forward had started a game because of the hamstring problem he sustained on Boxing Day.

There was a sense of Postecoglou’s men being back in the old routine, then, when Callum McGregor spread the ball out wide right to the Benfica loan player and he twisted Jake Vokins one way then another before curling the ball on to the head of Furuhashi, who headed it back across the helpless Ross Laidlaw.

Celtic thereafter missed a hatful of chances as they created more than 20 openings, with Furuhashi’s lack of match sharpness evident in a series of missed chances that could have snared him a hat-trick before the interval.

Malky Mackay’s side had a spell early in the second period but Celtic’s were resolute as they moved towards inflicting on the Highland club their first home defeat since the added-time earned 2-1 win from Postecoglou’s men in their last visit. Even the minutest potential for that not being doubled up evaporated when an effort from substitute Giorgos Giakoumakis that shimmered the bar rebounded down into the area in front of the lurking Jota, who slid in to knock the ball over the line. In doing so, he all but assured his club will cross another. The finishing one.

Ange Postecoglou on Jota’s Celtic future – ‘if two parties want the same thing’
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou intimated that all contract talks have been placed on ice as his team seek to close in on the title.

The impressive, and hiccup-free, 2-0 victory away to Ross County that has placed them within a derby victory next weekend of as good as sealing the cinch Premiership was underpinned by a best showing of the year from on-loan Benfica winger Jota. He netted his team’s clinching second late on after providing the cross Kyogo Furuhashi to score earlon on, which capped the Japanese forward’s first start in 2022 following injury.

But while the Celtic manager was content to concur with the sense of a return to his best for Jota, following reports from Portugal that the Glasgow club had decided against taking up their £6m buy option on the 23-year-old, Postecoglou batted away any talk of movement on securing the winger for next season.

“If anyone thinks we’re thinking of anything other than what happened today… For all of us the most important thing is that we work hard to get a successful year out of this [Jota loan deal],” the Australian said. “Whatever happens beyond that…these conversations. There are two parties and if two parties want the same thing, then it will happen. He was good. With him, he had such a great start to the year then he had a significant injury [towards the end of last year]. He’s another player who has just been really unfortunate this year with a disrupted year.

“He’s worked really hard to get back to the form we know he can. Today, he was really good for the team and had a good all round game. Just in that final third, he was looking threatening like we know he can be. It was great for him. Very few of our boys have had a smooth run this year and they’ve had to overcome difficulties and he’s one of them.”

Furuhashi is foremost among the Celtic personnel whose seasons have been abridged by injury, with today the first start since Boxing Day for the 27-year-old because of a hamstring issue. The club’s top scorer marked the occasion with a first goal – his 17th – since his double in the Premier Sports Cup final triumph over Hibernian on December 19.

“He’s a quality player and he would be missed at any club. We’ve managed really well without him but we know he’s got special qualities,” said the Celtic manager. “He’s not 100 percent sharp yet. If he was, he would have probably have had two or three today. Just getting that goal gives him the reward and hopefully the motivation to keep going. With him and Giako [Giorgos Giakoumakis] leading the line, we’ve got two strikers who I know have got goals in them and can give us some real cutting edge there.”

No, not a chance’ – Jota shuts down Celtic future talk after starring in Ross County win
Celtic winger Jota refused to entertain any discussions around his future after playing a starring role in a 2-0 win over Ross County that has put the league leaders within touching distance of the title.

The Portuguese winger produced an inspired performance, scoring one and setting up the other, to ensure the Hoops restored their six-point advantage over Rangers at the top of the Premiership standings ahead of next week’s all-important Old Firm showdown at Celtic Park.

Jota clipped the perfect cross onto the head of Kyogo Furuhashi for Celtic’s 12th minute opener and went on to terrorise the County defence throughout the afternoon before showing netting a rebound to secure victory for the Hoops three minutes from time.

Doubts remain over the future of the on-loan Benfica star, with talks between Celtic and his parent club ongoing amid speculation over a possible £6million permanent transfer this summer, but Jota insists he is not looking beyond the end of the current season.

“No, not a chance. I am just enjoying day by day,” was Jota’s reply when asked whether he has given any thought to where he will be playing his football next season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he added: “It has been a terrific season for me so I am just enjoying getting to know the people around me. Be a better person, be a better football player, I am learning every day with quality people. So that’s what I’m doing now. I don’t have to talk about that, I just want to enjoy and give everything for this shirt. As a football player, you need to keep your mind on the pitch that is all that matters. Contract things are for other times, so let me just play football and enjoy it.

“As football players we need to keep our minds on the pitch and that’s all that matters. Bureaucratic things are for another time. So let me just play football.”

BBC
Celtic will go into the final Old Firm game of the season six points clear of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership after a nervy win at Ross County.

The league leaders dominated in Dingwall but only had Kyogo Furuhashi’s early goal – his first since December – to show for it until Jota’s late second clinched a precious victory.

The triumph was enough to restore Celtic’s advantage at the summit with just four games remaining, starting with what could be a decisive derby at Celtic Park next Sunday.

Malky Mackay’s obdurate County, meanwhile, stay fifth in their pursuit of a first ever European qualification after what was just their second defeat in seven games.

Reaction & as it happened

It really could and should have been more for Celtic, but County also had chances of their own and did well to keep their visitors within touching distance.

And when Kyogo’s 12th-minute header arrowed into the net following a fantastic delivery from Jota, few would have predicted it would be the only goal of the day.

Celtic’s talisman had another two chances in the first half and could have headed in at half-time with the match ball. His combination play with Jota – who terrorised County throughout – lead to a volley that looped up and off the crossbar.

Kyogo was then quickest to react when Ross Laidlaw spilled a long-range effort from Matt O’Riley, but somehow the County goalkeeper was able to stick a foot at the rebound and put the ball behind.

On another occasion, the returning forward had the ball in the net after dashing onto an O’Riley through ball but the offside flag denied him.

The earlier reflex save gave Laidlaw confidence, then he denied Daizen Maeda. Again, Jota was the orchestrator and dinked a tempting ball in, but Maeda’s shot went high and the County stopper was able to stretch and tip over.

Celtic started the second half at the same pace, desperate for the second goal to kill the game off. Jota provided a sweet chip into the box and O’Riley beat Laidlaw to the ball, but Keith Watson was back to head off the line.

County had their best chance shortly after. Regan Charles-Cook cut back to Jordan White, who cleverly allowed the ball to roll to Harry Paton. Instead of shooting immediately, the Canadian hesitated, allowing Cameron Carter-Vickers to block.

The game became end-to end, County pushing for an equaliser and Celtic looking for a winner, but it was the latter which came in the 87th minute.

Liel Abada, who missed a glorious chance of his own, cut back for Georgios Giakoumakis. His shot curled off the bar but Jota reacted quickest, sliding in ahead of Connor Randall.

What did we learn?

Just as happened last time these sides met in Dingwall, County pushed Celtic all the way and huge credit must go to them.

Plenty of teams have folded under the pressure of this potent Celtic attack, who were certainly in the mood. Kyogo should have scored more and Abada and Maeda could have made it comfortable, but the County back-line were resolute.

It shows how far they’ve come from the side that didn’t pick up a league win until the end of October and a European place is still within their grasp.

As for Celtic, they bounced back from their Scottish Cup semi-final disappointment and head into another Old Firm derby with their confidence buoyed.

It wasn’t the easy afternoon they had in mind, but they have come through another tough test with three points and a step closer to reclaiming the title.
What they said

Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “I am delighted that, against a team like that who score early, it doesn’t become two or three considering they won by seven last week.

“We had the two half chances around their box and we’re playing against a high-quality team and it’s a measure of where we’ve come to that we are in the mix with five other teams in the top half.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “A difficult place to play against a difficult opponent and I thought we played really well.

“It feels like another important day for us, but every day is an important day for us and I’ve been saying that since week six. We’ve had to be almost perfect and players have been dealing with that every day.”
