Trivia

  • KO: 12:00; Sunday game on Sky TV; final match between the two this season; league match 35 of 38, Celtic v “The Old Firm”!
  • Celtic unbeaten in 29 league games stay six points clear (86pts) with vastly superior goal difference (+19 GD); only need 3 points from 3 remaining games to secure Celtic’s 10th title in 11 years
  • If Celtic had won this it would have finished the race today.
  • Referee John Beaton has a contentious history wrt Celtic. He was a disgrace today. Seemed to delay giving Celtic fouls! Also many Sevco fouls not given. The one where he put his hand in his pocket to book Bassey for a foul on Starfelt, then played advantage & ‘forgot’ to book him after that phase was a belter.
  • Ex-England captain John Terry sitting amongst Sevco Directors wearing a Celtic scarf. “I was invited by Joe to come up for the Glasgow Derby, it’s something I’ve always wanted to experience, the atmosphere here is incredible, the noise the colour I love it. It’s always nice getting one up on that mob, I’m a Celtic fan so I’m delighted .” – John Terry
  • On 14th minute, round of applause for youth Celtic fan Aoibhe Byrne, an emotional and respectful commemoration of a young life. She died in a tragic accident this week. RIP
  • Some saying Celtic will get group stage Champions League place because of the efforts of Sevco; that’s incorrect as Celtic contributed more to the 5yr coefficient: Celtic – 34.000; Sevco – 31.250.
  • Uefa Cup: Sevco v Leipzig first leg in Uefa Cup semi finals on past Thursday. ExCelt Andreas Hinkel is Leipzig’s assistant manager, and said his friend & former teammate John Kennedy (now Celtic assistant mgr) gave him some feedback on Sevco in a chat pre match! Both sides poor but Leipzig won  1-0. Second leg at Ibrox next week.
  • Celtic missing Juranovic out injured. Sevco missing 2-3 key players: Morelos, Ramsay, Roofe.
  • SPFL: Concerns over sponsorship with Cinch whether they may withhold some of the £1.6m due because of dispute with Sevco.
  • Nordic broadcaster Viaplay will broadcast Scotland NT matches from 2024-28!  Sky Sports had the rights.
  • Trophy laden night for Celtic FC at the PFAScotland Awards in Glasgow! – Manager of the Year: Ange Postecoglou – Player of the Year: Callum McGregor – Young Player of the Year: Liel Abada – Women’s Young Player of the Year: Jacynta – Goal of the Season:
  • Reports: L’Equipe – Celtic have made a bid of just over £2.5m for French striker Alexandre Mendy.
  • Reports: Celtic linked with move for Hammarby defender Mohanad Jeahze (Iraqi descent) for left-back role.
  • Reports: Hibs may hold talks with ex-Celt Roy Keane to replace Shaun Maloney as manager! John Kennedy no longer on shortlist.
  • World snooker championships final this weekend. Ronnie O’Sullivan defeats Judd Trump to equal Stephen Hendry’s seven world titles.
  • Richard Gordon leaving the Saturday edition of BBC Radio Scotland/Sportsound after 30 years. Quality broadcaster, moving to Sunday and midweek shows.
  • Politics: Labour candidate has been forced to attend anti-racism training after ‘racist’ and anti Catholic tweets were found.
  • Tory MP Neil Parish is resigning as an MP after admitting he watched pornography twice in Parliament! Said he was initially trying to look at tractors!

Summary

“People were questioning my appointment … I love that stuff.”
Ange Postecoglou on the naysayers (Apr 2022)

“It is a game they needed to win. We showed great resilience and didn’t get beaten which is important.”
Ange Postecoglou

“It is still six points with the goal difference in favour of Celtic. It will be more difficult after today.”
Sevco boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst

Sky TV – Andy Walker said: “How often does he do it, Jota? For the first time Celtic get a bit of penetration. In a similar vein again, Barisic is sleeping, Jota’s not. He’s alive, he’s alert. He’s determined to get a touch and he does to give Celtic that breakthrough. Yet again, Barisic caught on his heels.

Sky TV – Ally McCoist added: “Absolutely spot on Andy. The movement from Maeda is very good, he gives Tavernier a problem. He tries to pass Maeda onto Goldson but he doesn’t do it early enough. He gets the run on Goldson and the ball comes across, once again Barisic switches off.

@joebloggscity : Result better for Celtic as Sevco desperately needed nothing less than a win to keep them in with even a sliver of a hope to retain the league title. A full strength Celtic side at home struggled to defeat a weakened Sevco side. It was a dreadful game to watch and a poor performance by both sides. Really ends the league title race I think and job done now by Celtic.

The form of too many players today was off. Even Hart had one moment of madness although he also made some great saves. Sevco’s pressing of the defence when Celtic tried to play from the back worked quite well.

Tinhat on, but I think today’s really showed two sides to Jota. First half majestic and great goal. Second half anonymous and wasteful. Ralston has had a great season BUT today showed he is not close to Juaranovic in ability. CCV looked blown out after the first half, whilst Starfelt clearly needed to work on his distribution work.

Not the best day at the office for Celtic but in retrospect due to the standings going into the match, as all Celtic needed was simply NOT to lose then no damage done.

Etims: Good 1st half after slow start. Game should have been over at HT Shite 2nd half. Hanging on. They were fitter & stronger Perplexed with our passing around 6 yd box. Almost gifted them win Draw a fair result Would have snapped hand off to be 6 pts clear with 3 games to go. Hatate a million miles off the pace. Really feel for the guy as he publicly said recently he was mentally done in. No helping Reo or us with him starting at present. Give the kid a rest and hopefully he’ll come back flying next season after a well earned break.CalMac a one man midfield far too often. We are so fortunate to have him. A brilliant player who leads by example but…Ange needs to find consistent support for him as he can’t continue like this. Hopefully big recharge and prep this summer & Reo, MO’R and others really push on.Thought Jota was excellent. His best game v them. What a pass for Maeda who looked as if he shat it. No seen any replays yet!Overall I’m ecstatic #Celtic are this close to the title. Was heart ruling the head at start of season thinking we had a chance after rebuild. Ange and the players have been brilliant. It’s a process. Gradually bring in better players to play his system & we should get better  One aspect worth noting though is Hatate tries/plays one touch quick passes.. we need more players doing the same for system to work

RM of KDS:
We should have been two or three up at half time despite not being great. Maeda absolutely shat it from McGregor though which was pretty shameful.

Second half we were second best for most of it and a draw was a fair result. No shots on target is a damning stat.

Huns are fitter and better organised which is pretty concerning given we have had another week off.

Hatate should have been hooked at half time, our two full backs were abject and captain courageous hid in the second half again.

Result okay and we will win league but we need to play better in the big games.

Twitter:

Brian McNally: The draw maintains the #Celtic 6-point lead with 3 games to go & 1 win will effectively seal the title. The game could & should have been over in the first 45. But we lost the plot after that & it was a relief to hold on as Rangers took charge.

@bhoysanalytics :
Think if anything it’s clear there’s huge issues with the overall ability of the back 5 to play out.

Ralston very unsuited to the inverted ball playing role. Cbs struggling to break the press.

Big summer window with tough maybe even unpopular decisions ahead

AP:
Poor 2nd half same old problem. Can’t handle long balls. A different way of breaking quickly. We play the ball through and support those with the ball. They mostly launch to the wings and avoid the early build up relying on that accuracy, 2nd ball and forcing errors. Fair result.

7 of KDS:
Got the result needed. Last 20 wasn’t pretty after losing a cheap goal and wasteful with chances but got the minimum required and will the league next week. Gave them oxygen as they had no choice but to have a go in last 15.

Half way through the rebuild, with plenty players to still to who contribute nothing and key positions we all need upgraded. We have lots players but only about 15-16 he trusts.

Out that starting 11 today i made only 3 did their preseason at Celtic.

A proper preseason, few bodies in early and few out given (hopefully no qualifiers) will help no end.

Also need to improve further in sports science, scouting and specialised coaching.

Managers, coaches and players have done terrific to deliver 2 out of 3 domestic trophy’s in what was last June a eff.

Now we have a base, back the manager, finish the rebuild and get some quality in while moving on those who’s time is up.

That hun team took 4 years and plenty of dodgy ‘business men’ to build, eff them and their team is getting blown up in the summer to be replaced by mostly free transfers.

Celtic 1-1 Rangers: Champagne on ice for Celtic as Rangers hit back to delay rivals’ title party
Celtic must wait a little longer than they and their supporters had hoped to celebrate becoming Scottish champions for a 52nd time.

In delaying what is still surely the inevitable outcome to this title race, Rangers produced a performance at Celtic Park which they could reasonably claim merited the victory they needed to inject any credible sense of jeopardy into the final three rounds of fixtures.

The defending champions displayed character and purpose in responding to Jota’s 21st minute opener for Celtic, levelling through Fashion Sakala midway through the second half and finishing the stronger side.

But Celtic are on the verge of reclaiming the Premiership crown for good reason. Even when not at their cohesive best under Ange Postecoglou, they possess a resilience which has underpinned an unbeaten league run which now stretches to 29 matches.

Their six point lead over Rangers remains intact, with a vastly superior goal difference offering additional insurance as they look to cross the winning line at some stage of their remaining games against Hearts, Dundee United and Motherwell.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his players know that their own pursuit of silverware must now focus on the Europa League, where they face RB Leipzig in the second leg of their semi-final at Ibrox on Thursday, and the Scottish Cup final against Hearts.

But there was certainly no hint of concession to that scenario in van Bronckhorst’s team selection or in the manner his players approached the match.

The three changes he made – Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Sakala replacing Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Scott Wright – could not be construed as fielding a weakened side with Leipzig in mind.

As they attempted to put the chastening experience of their 3-0 defeat at this venue in February behind them, Rangers made the brighter start on this occasion and should have forged a lead in a highly progressive first 20 minutes.

Had Borna Barisic and Ryan Kent not got in each other’s way inside the Celtic penalty area in the third minute, it might have come their way then.

It should have done so in the 13th minute when James Tavernier provided a cross from the right which saw Kent steal a yard on Anthony Ralston at the far post. It was a glorious opportunity for the winger but he made poor contact with the ball and sent it wide of Joe Hart’s right hand post.

Celtic had struggled to make the kind of dynamic opening to the contest which has so often been their trademark under Postecoglou but that became of no relevance to the expectant home crowd when their team opened the scoring with their first significant attacking foray of the afternoon.

Neat link-up play down the left involving Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate allowed Greg Taylor to advance and play a smart pass to Daizen Maeda inside the penalty area.

The Japanese forward drove the ball across the face of the six yard box and, similar to Kent’s earlier chance at the other end, Jota got in front of the flat-footed Barisic. The Portuguese winger made no mistake, guiding the ball beyond the helpless Allan McGregor for his 12th goal of a hugely productive season.

As Rangers tried to regroup, an error from Arfield should have led to Celtic doubling their lead in the 32nd minute. Possession was lost carelessly to Hatate whose cross from the right was headed over by Jota from close range.

Rangers continued to enjoy good spells of possession but despite the best efforts of Joe Aribo in his unfamiliar central role up front, lacked a focal point in the final third of the pitch.

Sakala should have done better when he pounced on an error from Carl Starfelt, the Zambian forward showing a lack of awareness as he tried to go on his own into the penalty area rather than picking out a pass to the unmarked Aribo.

Celtic passed up another premium opportunity to secure a more commanding position before the interval when a lack of conviction from Maeda, picked out by Jota’s superb cross, saw him head wide from close range as McGregor advanced towards him.

Rangers made a positive start to the second half, Connor Goldson heading over after a Sakala header from Tavernier’s corner had been blocked by Matt O’Riley, but Maeda wasted a further chance to put the task all but beyond the visitors when he hoisted a shot over from a great position with only McGregor to beat.

Celtic enjoyed their best spell of the second half immediately following a triple substitution from Postecoglou which saw Giorgos Giakoumakis, Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton all introduced to the fray but their momentum was dramatically jolted by Sakala’s 67th minute equaliser.

Wright, who had replaced Aribo, drove forward on the right and fed Sakala who played a neat exchange of passes with Kent on the edge of the Celtic penalty area before threading a left foot shot between the unconvincing Hart and his right hand post.

As Rangers pushed hard for a winner, the Celtic goalkeeper redeemed himself more than once. He did well to turn over a shot from Sakala, who had shown great strength to get clear of Cameron Carter-Vickers, then made a crucial save to deny Arfield from close range after Wright had created the opening.

With Goldson pushing forward to join the attack, Rangers went for broke in the closing stages and came agonisingly close to grabbing all three points when Sakala surged into the box yet again and this time saw his shot beat Hart but rebound off the ‘keeper’s left-hand post.

Celtic inched closer to a 52nd Scottish title despite being held to a draw at home by nearest challengers Rangers.

Ange Postecoglou’s side stay six points clear with only three games remaining and with a near insurmountable 19-goal advantage over the Premiership holders.

Celtic overcame early Rangers pressure to take the lead through Jota’s close-range finish.

With the visitors looking out on their feet, Fashion Sakala fired them level to prolong the title race.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst had gone into the game admitting that it was a must-win game for his Rangers side, who are between legs in their Europa League semi-final with RB Leipzig.

Now unbeaten in 29 league games since September, Postecoglou’s side effectively only need three points from their three remaining games – at home to Heart of Midlothian and Motherwell and away to Dundee United – to officially secure Celtic’s 10th title in 11 years.

Reaction & as it happened
Celtic at doorstep of title – Postecoglou

Rangers had turned the tables on their Glasgow rivals to win last month’s Scottish Cup semi-final to ensure there would be no domestic treble for the League Cup winners and champions elect.

Van Bronckhorst, though, faced a dilemma of whether to make wholesale changes ahead of Thursday’s attempt to overcome a 1-0 deficit with Leipzig.

Bringing in Scott Arfield, Steven Davis and Sakala for Ryan Jack, Glen Kamara and Scott Wright was enough fresh legs to allow Rangers to establish an early edge.

It should have led to an opening goal when Ryan Kent stole in front of Anthony Ralston to meet a James Tavernier cross but could not find the target from 10 yards.

Celtic were shaken but showed Rangers how it should be done after a similar move minutes later as forward Daizen Maeda’s cross into the six-yard box found Jota darting in front of Borna Barisic at the back post to prod home.

Jota had a great chance to add to his 12th goal of the season when found free inside the penalty box by Reo Hatate’s through ball, but this time the on-loan Benfica winger headed wastefully over.

With Rangers looking increasingly hesitant, the unmarked Maeda also missed a golden opportunity as he headed clear from five yards from a Jota chip.

A Sakala header struck Matt O’Riley’s back in front of goal and Connor Goldson shot wastefully over as Rangers started the second half as they had the first, while Maeda again scooped over at the other end.

Just when Rangers’ heavy European schedule looked to be catching up with them, Kent set up Sakala for a low drive inside goalkeeper Joe Hart’s near post.

Almost immediately, another Sakala drive stung Hart’s fingertips and the Zambia striker should have done better than head over from 12 yards.

A late Hart double save from Scott Arfield and Kent, then a Sakala shot against the inside of a post, denied Rangers the victory they needed to really revive the title race.

What did we learn?

The Old Firm rivals are all square with two victories apiece in five derbies this season, but it is Celtic who did enough when it came to the Premiership crunch and are all but home and dry as champions.

There’s been a 10-point swing in their league fortunes since Van Bronckhorst took over from Steven Gerrard in November, but even under the Englishman they dropped home points against Motherwell, Hearts and Aberdeen as they failed to capitalise on Celtic’s early struggles under new manager Postecoglou.

Once the Australian stabilised that domestic form into a relentless intensity, Rangers were unable to respond as they reserved their best performances for Europe and the Scottish Cup.

The latest draw emphasised the shift in momentum and has all but ended the Ibrox side’s brief hold on the Premiership crown bar a late and unlikely Celtic collapse.

Van Bronckhorst will now concentrate on the Europa League before turning his attention to building a squad capable of regaining the title in his first summer transfer window as Postecoglou looks to capitalise on his second piece of Celtic silverware.
What they said

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was pretty intense, as you’d expect with so much on the line. We got our noses in front then had our best opportunities to kill the game off.

“We didn’t take them and Rangers, to their credit, hung in there – they’re a good side and we had to hold on at the end to get at least the draw we needed. We knew if we didn’t win today we were still in a good position. A draw leaves us in a really good position.”

Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Sky Sports: “We needed to win to close the gap to three points. We did everything. I couldn’t ask for more, especially in the second half.

“The only thing is, we didn’t score the big chances we had. We had a good performance. Physically we looked strong as well. Now we have three days to prepare for Leipzig and we have to show the same intentions and character we showed today.”
