Trivia

  • KO: 12:00; Saturday match; League match 36 of 38; on Sky tv
  • Match sold out weeks in advance.
  • Celtic closing in on league title, at the start of the day 4pts were needed to seal the title in last three games. With this victory, effectively sealed the title as goal difference advantage is too great. Formally Celtic have to get one more point from last two games now. Sevco won 2-0 v Dundee Utd the next day after this match.
  • Hearts win EL playoff spot but also guaranteed Conf League Group stage spot.
  • Uefa: Russian teams barred from UEFA club competitions next season due to Ukraine invasion. Hands automatic CL group stage entry to Celtic.
  • Former Celtic chief exec Peter Lawwell’s son (Mark Lawwell) has been appointed the Head of Celtic’s First Team Scouting and Recruitment. Some state this is further evidence of nepotism, but in fairness he has a pedigree, is reportedly part instrumental to Postecoglu’s appointment, and Postecoglu has warmly welcomed his appointment.
  • Reports: Celtic to exercise option on Jota (acc to Portuguese sources).
  • Another £1-2m for Celtic with ex-Celt Ryan Christie getting into EPL with Bournemouth. Plus also further payment as Ajer’s Brentford stayed up in the EPL.
  • Former Celtic captain Scott Brown has announced his retirement at the age of 36.
  • Ex-Celt Roy Keane will not be the next Hibs manager after reportedly being put off by how the club operate in the transfer window.
  • Leigh Griffiths‘ post Celtic wander continues as Falkirk cut him loose. Scored two goals in 13 appearances, is one of 14 to depart
  • Hearts goalkeeper (and ex Celt) Craig Gordon has become the first player to win the Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year on three separate occasions. Congratulations!
  • Sevco reach the Uefa cup final.
  • Cameron Carter-Vickers called up for USA national team for upcoming friendly series of four matches set for next month (will be his first cap in 3 years).
  • Popular podcaster and former Celtic midfielder Si Ferry appointed as new manager of Lowland League side Broomhill following a “historic partnership” with his Open Goal show.

Summary

Ange Postecoglou when asked by BBC radio whether he has a preference for clinching the title, Sevco dropping points or without home fans: “Only you could make winning a championship feel like a downer. No, mate, any way it comes, thank you.”
“The stuff that remains in peoples’ memory is the most precious!”
“You consistently underestimate me!”

Journalist Tom English: Celtic aren’t champions yet, but it’s only days away and it will be one of the very best they’ve won in the last decade. They’ve been terrific today. Matt O’Riley top notch, Twenty-one years old, £1.5m. Superb. You get the sense that Celtic are only getting started under AP

Joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki: when Hearts scored quickly in this match there were fears of a hard afternoon ahead, and Celtic did struggle to break down Hearts especially with Craig Gordon in good form. However the home advantage and class of the Celtic side prevailed with an onslaught on the opposition. Add in a wrongly disallowed goal for offside and the gap should have been wider. Some very fine goals today and a fine performance all across the side.

Some argue Hearts goal was offside but proved immaterial by the final scoreline.

With the league really now wrapped up, time to look at beyond this end season and onto the next.

Ange though must also be given full credit for turning around a sinking ship. It probably is apt that the league has been practically sealed with a comprehensive win v Hearts who at the start were the ones who derailed the challenge in the first match.

Twitter:

@etims: Maeda, Kyogo, O’Riley and GG.. quite an apt way to see it out. Goals from new guys getting job done…unlucky with Jota and Abada effortsSome game by Greg Taylor today..champion!

Daizen was outstanding, O’Riley’s best game by far but Taylor was man of the match. Forrest unplayable when he came on too.

Ralston deserve a good shout out too, solid, hard tackler and would give anything for the shirt. Need a few guys like that in the team. McGregor, CCV & Starfelt good as usual. But agree Taylor had a great game.

@bhoysanalytics: Celtic are champions. Ange brings it home at the first time of asking. To do it in a transition season with all the hurdles we’ve had is a fantastic achievement We are only going to get better. By far the best team in Scotland

@agentscotland: Giakoumakis is a fantastic one touch finisher, 13/14 goals gave been onr touch but it’s a part of Kyogo’s game that has been underlooked, 14/18 goals have been one touch finishes too, 3/18 have been two touch and the firet touch to set himself up was world class each time.

@dd: I know anything can happen mathematically but confident Celtic have won 55 in a row in Ange’s first season.

AGT of KDS: An absolutely incredible achievement. Certainly in my lifetime I don’t remember Celtic ever being in so shambolic a state as we were when Ange walked in the door just a few weeks before the season started.
He’d never operated in European football never mind Scotland, and he arrived with no backroom staff. He would face a strong sevco side which would go on to reach the europa league final.
How Ange pulled the club together and led us to a title is quite miraculous. The speed and scale of Celtic’s recovery are difficult to comprehend. When we won the LC I was pleased and relieved that we would not, again. finish the season empty handed. It was encouraging , but I thought the huns would still take the league this season.
That night in Dingwall in that tiny fraction of a second when the ball connected with Ralston’s head methinks something deep in the bowels of the earth turned, Something was awoken and tonight we can all raise a glass for the truly magnificent Glasgow Celtic.

Celtic the champers champions as their title success has fizz like few before it

It was Celtic’s season in microcosm.

A slow start, a set-back and then sizzle. Lots of sizzle, with slickest, scintillating football giving way to the stadium serenading Ange Postecoglou’s men in recognition of their favourites effectively sealed the title with a 4-1 swatting of Hearts. Only the arithmetic confirmation remains going into the final two games for Celtic. Nine points and 22 goals better off than second-placed Rangers – in action at home to Dundee United on Sunday to match their usurpers on the 36-game mark – the only unknown is the ultimate margin of success.

It is standard for Postecoglou and his players to make their way around the arena at the conclusion of every home encounter and acknowledge the backing from their home faithful. The lap of the ground, with the manager walking on his own 10 paces behind them, felt very different this time, though. It had greater resonance. As illustrated by Postecoglou waving furiously towards his two young son in the min stand before he consistently beat the Celtic logo on the chest of his lucky black jumper with his clenched fist as he communed with the fans in all four corners of the ground. Here was a lap that demanded the word honour be latched on it. And the honour that the Australian and his squad have brought to their club is of a magnitude that demands to be recognised in full.

The PA system may have blared out Daft Punk’s One More Time. A choice that could be taken as a reference to the imminent lifting of a 10th league trophy in 11 years for the club. Likewise with the faithful giving welly to the “champions again, oh-way, oh-way” chant, and an old school favourite “we’ve won the league again, fly the flag”. All touch on the regularity with which Celtic win titles. Heck, they will shortly be in the position of having snared 16 out of 22. Yet, not merely have the Parkhead club rarely enjoyed a championship triumph such as their latest. Rarely has anything like this been witnessed in the modern age in the Scottish game.

Some statistical context demands to be given. No fewer than 16 senior players have pitched at the club since Postecoglou was appointed last June. Nine of these are now first picks. Only captain Callum McGregor and Greg Taylor – two of the driving forces as Celtic had a fleet of them in running over the top of the Gorgie side – make the first XI when Postecoglou has every player available to him. Never before has there been such a turnover in a season for the team to which all others in the top flight must ultimately defer. In suffering three defeats and posting a draw across their first seven games, Celtic’s route to taking the title from a Rangers team that left them for dust with a 25-point winning margin last season required recovering from position in mid-September when all appeared utterly lost. Not since the Ibrox side in 1993-94 has a team proved so faltering in this opening stretch of games and still won the league. And they then had a 44-match programme to mount their recovery. Postecoglou’s men were able to climb out the hole into which they had dug themselves because they have strung together 30 games cinch Premiership games unbeaten, winning 25 of these. Only twice since 1967-68 – the invincible seasons of Rangers last season, and Celtic in 2016-17 – have teams put together longer runs without loss in Scotland’s upper tier.

Celtic now sit on 89 points, so could finish with 95. In only two of their nine-in-a-row seasons did they rack up higher totals than 95. Their goal quartet against Hearts, which came after Ellis Simms had lashed in a low effort only three minutes in, took their goal haul to 85 for the campaign. It isn’t a stretch to consider that, between their trip to Dundee United on Wednesday and entertaining Motherwell in their closing encounter, they could match Rangers’ 92 total from their annus mirabilus of last term, when that tally underpinned their bursting through the 100 point threshold. Indeed, the flood of openings with which they submerged Robbie Neilson’s men could have practically taken them there on an afternoon when the celebratory boiled up following a simmering, subdued start to the afternoon for the hosts, on and off the pitch.

The transformation proved a consequence of Celtic being placed in a tricky spot through the concession of only a sixth goal in a home league game; a strike that put them behind for only a second time in Premiership on their own patch. Celtic slipped through the gears to motor their way back into the contest, and the revs that produced in turn engaged their support. Maybe they had a touch of fortune with referee Don Robertson failing to see the infringement by Callum McGregor on Toby Sibbick before the ball was swept forward for Jota to befuddle Stephen Kingsley before whipping in a right-wing cross that Daisen Maeda put away with aplomb to make it 1-1 on the half hour.

Hearts keeper Craig Gordon had thwarted Celtic on a couple of occasions before then, as they marauded forward with menace. Matt O’Riley an elegant, inventive presence and McGregor a bundle of energy as they combined with the fleet-footed Jota, Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi to leave Hearts reeling. A first goal gave way to a second five minutes later with Furuhashi forcing in – despite Gordon clawing the ball out from just behind the line – after Celtic’s on-loan Portuguese winger had out-jumped Harry Cochrane at the back post to set him up.

The two teams looked like they were in different footballing stratospheres in a one-sided second. Celtic’s two goal return was meager on the play’s balance. In 69 minutes, the shape-shifting O’Riley guided in a Taylor cross that found him on the right of goal shortly after he had cracked an exquisite effort off the post. With seconds of normal time, two of the substitutes linked up for the fourth, James Forrest cutting back for Giorgos Giakoumakis to cream a first-time effort past the helpless Gordon. It was a goal that franked a Postecoglou-patented performance of relentlessness and artful attacking. For a team that might be deemed champers champions so sparkling a brand of football has their manager made his mission.

Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou talks good guys and Bad Guys as his team move to brink of title

Fussing about the manner Celtic rubberstamp their title success wasn’t for Ange Postecoglou following his men’s swaggering 4-1 victory at home to Hearts that has placed them on the cusp of the championship.

A sparkling win that was the 25th of a 30-game unbeaten league sequence, the form of Postecoglou’s remade squad has restored the club’s pre-eminent position the Scottish game, Rangers could now only usurp them on goal difference in the closing week of the cinch Premiership. On this measure, Celtic are 22 goals better off than their rivals. The nine-point gap currently between the pair means that any slip by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men in their hosting of Dundee United on Sunday would hand Celtic the title.

The Australian was asked if he would prefer sealing the deal themselves when they take on United at Tannadice on Wednesday, but he simply isn’t wired up that way. “I’ll win it any old way mate, it doesn’t really bother me,” he said. “For us, what’s important is that I think we’ve earned it this year, and that we continue to earn it. We’re not collapsing over the line, we’re strong, we’re committed to something. Our performances and the challenges we’re overcoming are reflecting that. Any way it comes is fine, and more importantly, I think it’s fully deserved.”

Postecoglou won’t be checking his phone to keep abreast of events at Ibrox with all mobile devices requiring to be switched off where he is heading with his two young sons. “As I’ve said before, my boys take charge,” the Celtic manager said. “There’s a new flick out called The Bad Guys, so that’s on the agenda tomorrow, so we’ll see how it goes.” It was then put to the 56-year-old that The Bad Guys might typically mean something different entirely to the Celtic support. He declined to engage with that aside. “Does it?” he said. “OK, there you go.”

Celtic have gone on a top flight run without loss that has only bettered on two occasions in the past 54 years. Postecoglou believes that will ensure the bigger picture as to what he and his team have achieved in their first year together will see their endeavours of a squad he has commended as only good guys cast in technicolour glory. “I’m sure when the story is written of the season, I think people will probably reflect that it’s been a fairly outstanding effort on all fronts, no doubt,” he said. “I know I talk a lot about this is just the first step of the rebuild and we are going to be better but I don’t say that to dismiss the extraordinary effort it has taken this year and the achievement of this group of players. After round seven, when we had already lost three games and drawn one, you kind of know that if you are going to be champions this year, we are going to have to be pretty good from then on. And we have been pretty good.”

Celtic players and staff celebrate all but winning the Scottish Premiership title

Celtic roared back to all but secure the Scottish Premiership title with a rousing victory at home to Hearts.

Ellis Simms’ emphatic finish stunned the home crowd early on, but the league leaders responded in relentless fashion as two goals in seven first-half minutes from Japanese duo Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi turned the game.

Matt O’Riley and Giorgos Giakoumakis sealed the win that puts Celtic nine points clear of Rangers, who have three games to claw back the deficit plus an inferior goal difference of 22.

If Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Europa League finalists fail to beat Dundee United at Ibrox on Sunday, the title will mathematically be beyond last season’s league winners, but even victory will almost certainly be delaying the inevitable.

Celtic travel to Tannadice – the ground where they relinquished the trophy last season – on Wednesday. Should Rangers win on Sunday, a point will be enough for Ange Postecoglou’s men to confirm their status as champions.

Hearts, who pushed for a leveller before O’Riley increased the hosts’ advantage, have already secured third spot.

Reaction & as it happened

While Rangers’ Europa League party had just about died down on the south side of the river, Celtic were looking to start their own by effectively reclaiming the title from their rivals with a 25th win in 30 league games.

Hearts did their best to halt the league leaders’ pursuit by silencing the boisterous home support with an early opener when Simms spun in the box under pressure before crashing a fine finish past Joe Hart.

On first viewing, it looked like the Everton loanee may have been offside, but replays showed Carl Starfelt’s foot was playing the striker on.

After a ropey first 10 minutes, Celtic showed signs of clicking into gear when David Turnbull, on his first start since mid-December, and Kyogo forced Craig Gordon into sharp saves.

O’Riley was next to be denied when Stephen Kingsley headed away his goal-bound effort. But Postecoglou’s side soon got the goal their relentless pressure merited when great work from Jota down the right saw the winger slide the ball across goal for Maeda to sweep in a leveller.

Hearts were incensed, claiming a free-kick should have been awarded for a foul on Toby Sibbick in the build-up, but referee Steven McLean waved play on.

The first-half turnaround was complete seven minutes later and Jota was again the provider, towering at the back post to set up Kyogo, whose close-range header just about crossed the line despite Gordon’s best efforts.

Robbie Neilson’s side pushed for a second-half equaliser without creating anything clear cut, but the game was beyond the visitors when O’Riley, who had smashed a shot off the left-hand post 10 minutes earlier, drilled low into the far corner from the right of the box.

Celtic polished off the comeback win when Giakoumakis slammed in a fourth after Gordon had denied Reo Hatate with another top save, a goal that takes Postecoglou’s free-flowing champions-elect to 85 for the league season.
Man of the match – Jota
Jota
With the league now all but in the bag, Celtic must now focus their attention on securing the services of the Benfica loanee, whose two assists takes his goal contributions for the season to 26 (12 goals & 14 assists)
What did we learn?

“We don’t stop” is the message that has been rhymed off continuously by Postecoglou this season. That relentless nature was on show again as the Celtic boss hailed his side’s “outstanding” reaction to going a goal down.

After coming in as an unknown quantity and enduring a rocky start to life in Glasgow, it has been a remarkable turnaround from the former Australia manager, who has overseen a massive rebuild while driving the club on to a 10th title in 11 seasons.

It is now 30 league matches undefeated for Celtic, their longest streak since Brendan Rodgers guided them to a 56-game run between May 2016 and December 2017.

The defeat does not alter Hearts’ league position, but Neilson can be pleased with his side’s performances against the Old Firm this season.

Prior to O’Riley adding Celtic’s third, the Tynecastle club pushed the hosts in the preceding 70 minutes, a common theme in the clashes this season that have seen Hearts earn an opening-day win in July before running the leaders close in the two league games in the winter.

Another positive for Neilson was the return of the influential Kingsley to the starting line-up, while fellow defenders John Souttar and Michael Smith, plus midfielder Cammy Devlin, were fit enough for the bench.

If the Tynecastle medical team can get as many players as possible off the treatment table and fit for the Scottish Cup final against Rangers in a fortnight, it gives Neilson’s side every chance.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I’m really proud of the group. We went a goal down early and you wonder how they’re going to react, knowing there’s a nervousness around the stadium.

“But this group of players refuses to lose belief and they are just relentless. Our football was outstanding. The players have bought into the team we want to be. It’s been a massive collective effort.”

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson: “Until Celtic scored, we controlled where the game was getting played.

“But they are very good team and if you give them opportunities they’ll score goals. We scored a wee bit too early to be honest.”
