Summary

“I thought the commitment and the effort was good, particularly in the first half.”
Ange Postecoglu

A decent run out for the players , a change from last season when Ange didn’t even know half of their names and the players didn’t know the tactics. Good debuts for some and nice comeback/reboots for others, Kenny stole the show with two goals but goals from across the board.

Most attention was lost/focussed on the hapless UK govt with the PM refusing to resign despite 40 of his govt resigning.

Davie McLaughlin @McLaughlin_1888 · 2m Great wee result tonight. We almost scored as many goals as government resignations.

CELTIC… 7
(Kenny 9 & 25; Hatate 12; Johnston 17; Jullien 42; Forrest 43; Vata 76)

WIENER VIKTORIA… 0

Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoyed a comfortable 7-0 victory over Austrian side, Wiener Viktoria, in their first pre-season match of the summer.

Celtic started the game on the front foot, pressing their Austrian opponents deep in their half, and it wasn’t long before the team, wearing the new green and white Hoops kit, opened the scoring.

Mikey Johnston was the provider, driving into the box and sliding a low pass across the six-yard box for Johnny Kenny to finish from close range.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0 and the goal was a superb finish from Reo Hatate. He knocked the ball out wide to James Forrest and continued his run towards the edge of the box, side-footing the return pass from Forrest into the net with his left foot.

Johnston, who looked lively down the left flank and combining well with Alexandro Bernabei, made it 3-0 on 17 minutes, latching on to a ball that had been deflected into his path. He shrugged off a challenge and fired the ball home beyond the keeper with his left foot.

Celtic’s passing and pressing was played at a tempo that Wiener Viktoria couldn’t handle, and Johnny Kenny scored his second and Celtic’s fourth of the game on 25 minutes with a cool finish from eight yards out.

And a quickfire double just before half-time made it 6-0 at the break. First of all, Chris Jullien started the move with a crossfield pass to Johnston, and then was on hand to head home from six yards out after Kenny’s ehader came back off the post.

Then, just 60 seconds later, Johnston was again the provider, sliding the ball into the path of James Forrest to steer the ball home with his left foot.

After the break there were fewer chances for the Hoops, though Liam Shaw, one of a number of substitutes for Celtic, was unlucky when his shot from a Rocco Vata cross came back off the post. Ajeti followed up but his shot hit the side-netting.

However, goal number seven came in the 76th minute when Shaw played a ball over the top for Vata to run on to. And the Celtic winger produced a good finish to complete the scoring.

It was a good start to pre-season for the Hoops, who will now face Rapid Vienna on Saturday.

Ange Postecoglou hails unfamiliar Celtic line-up after 7-0 pre-season friendly win
Ange Postecoglou said he was pleased with the “effort and intent” of his Celtic players as an unfamiliar line-up claimed a 7-0 win over Austrian side Wiener Viktoria in their opening pre-season friendly.

New signing Alexandro Bernabei was handed a debut at left-back as the Hoops lined up without a clutch of recognised stars who were afforded an extended summer break after playing international fixtures in June.

It meant starts for players who saw limited first-team action last season such as Osaze Urhoghide, Christopher Jullien, Bosun Lawal, James McCarthy, Yosuke Ideguchi and Jonny Kenny, who struck twice.

Also on target were Reo Hatate, Mikey Johnson, Jullien, James Forrest and youngster Rocco Vata.

Postecoglou said: “It was okay. Obviously we’ve just started pre-season and the boys who played today are the ones who came in earlier and had an extra week under their belt.

“They’ve had a good couple of days here and the boys are working hard. We’re not going into these friendly games feeling fresh because we’re pushing the boys hard. Considering all that I thought the effort and intent was good, particularly in the first half.

“It’s about everything. It’s about fitness. It’s about playing our football and the standards we set. Everything is included. Irrespective of whether it’s the first game or the last game of pre-season we just want to make a mark with everything we do and for the most part it was positive tonight.”

As well as Kenny, Vata and Lawal, there were also appearances for Owen Moffat, Matthew Anderson, Ben Summers and Josh Dede as the Celtic youngsters looked to impress the manager ahead of the new season.

“Throughout pre-season we’ve had guys come in different stages so this is a window of opportunity for the young boys to experience this environment and for us to have a look at them,” Postecoglou said. “They’ve all acquitted themselves well and they now realise what’s required at this level. They’ve been solid contributors and they were today.”

The standard of opposition will go up on Saturday when Celtic face Rapid Wein, who finished fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga last season.

“It doesn’t change for us irrespective of who the opposition are. We’ve just got to keep working to our standards and our levels,” Postecoglou added. “We’ve still got hard work to put into the boys and they are willing participants. They want it.

“They know this is the time for us to lay a strong foundation for what’s ahead. We’ve had a good couple of days training already and hopefully it’s a good strong finish to the week.”
