Blimey.”
  • “I fight the world, I fight myself”, out of favour Christoph Jullien gets heavy on Instagram social media, although not a dig at Celtic https://videocelts.com/2022/08/blogs/latest-news/i-fight-the-world-i-fight-myself-out-of-favour-celt-goes-heavy-on-social-media/

Summary

“We are really big on having a strong mindset.”
“Our discipline, our commitment to play our football was really good and we got the rewards for it”
Ange Postecoglou

Celtic scoring some absolute beauties today. Can’t remember another game with as many great goals. Two overhead kicks (one was a nutmeg)! One incredible long range goal too! Plus a wonderful team goal that kicked it all off. Exceptional day, and the player of the match was possibly Greg Taylor who was a defender and didn’t’ score. Return for Starfelt who scored too which was great for his confidence.

Jenz with a spectacular overhead kick for number three , he was very alert and agile for the goal , a terrific finish. Next thing you know Giakoumakis scores an even better overhead kick later on!

He won’t get all the plaudits as he didn’t get on the scoresheet but I thought Taylor was the best player on the pitch today. A true professional.

MB08 of KDS:
The type of display we have seen loads of times but just haven’t converted the chances. Hopefully a sign of things to come.

4 goals from corners in 3 games is good to see as well.

Hart not even troubled.

JJ and Taylor both creating havoc in the inverted roles.

Mooy looks as though he is getting up to speed and will be good addition.

Abada and Giakoumakis were just buzzbombs when they came on. Forrest also looked sharper.

If we get two more in with Jullien and Ajeti going, then we are in magnificent shape.

Celtic in the mood to better Rangers with thirst-quenching display as Jota makes poignant celebration
On another stiflingly warm day, Celtic drank deep of the hosts’ munificence as well as demonstrating their own inspiration to register a comprehensive victory.

This 5-0 win over a ragged Kilmarnock side edges them ahead of Rangers again at the top on goal difference. Anything they can do, we can do better was the mantra at Rugby Park.

The visitors bettered their rivals’ 4-0 win over St Johnstone the previous day and might indeed have done so by more in the final analysis. As well as scoring the opening, Kyogo Furuhashi hit the bar with a header.

Jota added another stunning strike to his expanding portfolio after he found the top corner after letting fly from 30 yards. He later dedicated the goal to his Benfica mentor Fernando Chalana. The former Portugal international died at the age of 65 last week. Jota kissed a wrist band with Chalana’s name on it and pointed to the heavens.

The Killie defence had more cracks in it than a dried-up river bed but four of Celtic’s five goals were still of the watch again and again variety. The parched, brown fields of Ayrshire were a good metaphor for a home team whose hopes had evaporated long before the final whistle. Kilmarnock’s own patch of turf is of course synthetic. Celtic made a mockery of the advantage it’s meant to hand the home side.

There were water breaks but little relief otherwise for Kilmarnock in front of watching Scottish Cup-winning manager Bobby Williamson, who took part in an entertainingly clipped interview on the park during the interval. The Killie cheerleaders also did their best to cheer up the locals at half-time but it was a forlorn effort.

Already three goals down, the game was up for Kilmarnock. When centre-halves are scoring acrobatic goals against you it’s probably allowable to concede it’s not going to be your day.

Moritz Jenz turned to hook in Celtic’s third over his shoulder to leave the hosts very much down and out. Substitute Carl Starfelt, who came on for Jenz after 55 minutes, scored his first goal for the club when he forced the ball into the net at the second attempt after 75 minutes. Kilmarnock might have hoped they had stemmed the tide. No such luck.

Giorgos Giakoumakis got in on the act with nine minutes left when he emulated Jenz with an overhead kick after a cross from the right from fellow substitute Liel Abada.

Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes acknowledged the quality of some of Celtic’s play and goals. However, he still felt such a margin of defeat was unacceptable. He said he was “embarrassed” by the loss of five goals at home.

“I know we’ll be better and we’re capable of getting results in this league, but there is that kind of feeling that our season starts now,” he said.

“It still shouldn’t be 5-0, even though we’re not ready to take on a Celtic. That’s what I’m disappointed with.”

The Rugby Park side have endured a torrid start to their return to the top flight although they can console themselves they won’t have to play either half of the Old Firm in the league again until January, when they will once more face Celtic and Rangers in successive weeks. Currently second bottom of the table, McInnes will hope to have improved his side’s position before then.

Kilmarnock play bottom of the table Ross County next as they seek to kick-start their campaign but that tough trip to the Highlands will hardly be welcomed either.

They were their own worst enemies here as slackness helped Celtic open up a commanding first-half lead. Kyogo poked home the opener after seven minutes and a stunning strike from Jota made it seem a long, long way back for the home side in extremely muggy conditions. The slim prospect of a comeback was quashed when Jenz scored for the second time in successive weeks with a hooked finish more in keeping with a centre forward than centre half.

Any game-plan devised by McInnes had to be ripped up after the initial stages which saw Celtic take such an early lead. The Killie back four was too easily opened up but credit has to be given to man-of-the-match Greg Taylor, whose ball in behind the hosts’ defence set Maeda – who held his run to avoid being flagged offside – on his way.

He then crossed for his compatriot Kyogo to stab home off a post. It was all very straightforward but nonetheless devastating in its simplicity of execution. All Kilmarnock could offer in response was a tame effort into the hands of Joe Hart from Kyle Lafferty after he had been set up by strike partner Oli Shaw. Fraser Murray saw a shot skip past the far post.

Celtic were finding great joy down Kilmarnock’s left with Jota and Josip Juranovic combining well. McInnes’ problems were exacerbated when left back Jeriel Dorsett limped off five minutes before half time with suspect ligament damage to be replaced by Calum Waters.

Killie were two down and creaking badly. There was little they could have done about Jota’s strike except close him down with more alacrity than they managed. Maeda was again credited with an assist but it was an assist in the loosest sense of the word.

The Japanese brought down and then laid the ball off for Jota, who took a touch before launching a sensational strike towards Walker’s top right hand corner from fully 30 yards. Jenz hooked in number three on the stroke of half-time after Kilmarnock failed to clear a corner.

It wasn’t quite Manchester United levels of capitulation, but it came close. If Maeda had controlled Jota’s cross from the right he would have been in with a chance of scoring a fourth before half-time. Jota, too, had an excellent chance but opted to shoot rather than square the ball and Walker pulled off a good save.

“Most significant of the lot” – Why Ange Postecoglou loved one of Celtic’s five goals against Kilmarnock more than others
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has hailed defender Carl Starfelt’s goalscoring return to action after a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock.

HAVE YOUR SAY

On a day when his side scored two overhead kicks and one 30-yard strike, the manager described the Swede’s bundled-in goal to put Celtic four up with 15 minutes left as the most “significant” in terms of what it meant to the player personally.

As well as marking his return from a hamstring injury, it was also Starfelt’s first goal for the club on his 50th appearance. The centre half, who replaced fellow goalscorer Moritz Jenz ten minutes after half-time, needed two attempts to force the ball past Kilmarnock goalkeeper Sam Walker after he was in the right place at the right time following Matt O’Riley’s corner. It was his first appearance of the season.

“He has worked really hard in rehab,” said Postecoglou. “He was really frustrated after such a strong season for us last year and then he went away on international duty and got injured and missed pretty much all of the pre-season for us.

“He has worked really hard to get himself back to a position where he is available again. Credit to him, he is a really good pro. He comes in every day and works really hard in training and he’s a really strong team-mate. I am really pleased for him to get a goal, he has been trying really hard. It was probably the ugliest of the five but probably the most significant.”

Celtic seemed to make a mockery of Postecoglou’s pre-match concerns about the quality of Kilmarnock’s synthetic pitch. However, the Australian still felt the park – as well as the heat, which saw two water breaks – represented a challenge.

“It wasn’t the easiest of conditions for our boys to play football both in terms of the temperature and the pitch,” he said.

“They had a singular focus. It (the pitch) still does affect us and it did affect us at times with our fluency, and stumbling a little bit because the natural mechanics of a turf pitch aren’t there.

“But again, you can either use that as a clutch to adjust how we play or we can stick to what we do and to the players’ credit they did that.”

Moritz Jenz fires in one of two acrobatic Celtic finishes during their victory

Celtic ran riot at Rugby Park as they swatted Kilmarnock aside to continue their unbeaten start in the Scottish Premiership.

Kyogo Furuhashi netted an early opener before Jota’s 30-yard screamer and Mortiz Jenz’s acrobatic effort made it three by the break.

Carl Starfelt then scored his first Celtic goal, with Georgios Giakoumakis’ overhead kick completing the rout.

Celtic are now 35 games unbeaten in the Scottish Premiership.

Meanwhile, Kilmarnock are still looking for their first win back in the top flight.

Reaction & as it happened

Ange Postecoglou said he felt no need to change the side which ended up winning at Ross County last weekend.

His decision was justified within seven minutes as Greg Taylor – looking increasingly comfortable as Celtic’s first-choice left-back – slipped in Daizen Maeda. He cut back to the onrushing Kyogo, who finished a straightforward move off the post.

Jota got the second, firing spectacularly into the top corner from distance – although there was a question mark over whether Killie keeper Sam Walker could have done better.

There wasn’t much he could do about the third though. Gathering a cleared corner, Callum McGregor fired the ball towards goal. It fell kindly to Jenz, who swivelled and hooked the ball over his shoulder to get his second Celtic goal in as many weeks.

It took the visitors longer to find their fourth, with Kilmarnock content to let the game fizzle out in the second half. That wasn’t to be though, as Walker’s save from a Celtic corner allowed Starfelt to prod home.

If there was debate about whether Jenz’s goal was an overhead kick, there was none about Giakoumakis’ effort. A crossed ball looped into the sky, the Greek striker watched it on to his foot and bicycle-kicked it through the legs of Walker for a classy fifth.

Celtic look unstoppable as Killie cut to ribbons

There’s still a mighty long way to go this season, but Celtic have started in a fashion that will leave Postecoglou confident of retaining the title.

They were relentless at times, pinning Kilmarnock into their own 18-yard box and toying with them like a cat with a ball of string.

Of course, they are yet to face the test of two games a week, but that will start with the Champions League group stage in September. However, the depth they had on the bench this afternoon suggests rotation isn’t the threat it used to be.

It was an ominous message for the other teams in the league. Derek McInnes changed Kilmarnock’s formation to try and match Celtic in a 4-3-3. It simply didn’t work as individually Celtic’s stars showed too much quality in finding and creating space for themselves.
What they said

Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes: “We talked about the importance of the start of the game. I do think that first goal is self-inflicted. It felt like a gimme, and it lifts them. You don’t need to give them any encouragement to play their football.

“Celtic controlled the game as we expected but when the ball arrived in our box, it was nothing to do with their level of player. It was the type of goal we shouldn’t be losing and three or four of the goals are avoidable.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We just wanted the intent of playing our football and not letting these things stop us. Obviously there were times we couldn’t do it as fluently as we’d like but the boys’ attitude was first rate.

“In all our games so far, the subs have made a massive impact and that’s something we need to keep up. We’ve got the luxury of one game a week at the moment but pretty soon that won’t be the case and we need more than 11 players to be ready to go.”
