Summary

A wonderful afternoon at Tannadice Park. The biggest away win in Scottish Premiership history. Couldn’t have asked for more. WHAT A TEAM

Kyogo: Can‘t believe what happened today. I am so happy that I scored a hattrick and helped my team to 9 goals! What a game….

Ange: “Credit to the players. They were great today – really disciplined and focused.”

jbj of KDS: Fantastic performance from everyone today. Thought we would just play out the second half but they kept up a decent tempo even though DU were poor.
Have to say there are many other teams I would rather score 9 against.
Great to see Abada getting due recognition for his performance.

Flinchy of KDS:

Took us a bit to properly get going – still managed to score one in that time – then after the second went it we were much more comfortable. Scored 9, but you could still say sort-of wasteful considering it could have been 15. A couple of lucky bounces and some last-ditch stuff from Utd stopped it being double-figures (just).

They are a poor, poor side, but take nothing away from our goals today: some of the play was as good as I’ve seen from a Celtic team in my lifetime. We thought we’d never see the likes of Larsson again in a Celtic shirt, and we had to wait a while for him, but Kyogo is well-worth the wait.

Pace wasn’t ideal against Kilmarnock (benefit of the doubt because of the pitch), and even less so against Hearts. The first half hour was similar today, so if we can just get the pace right from the off, we might get to 10 in a game…

Pablo5 of KDS:

This is actually very important.

Dundee United deserve a lot of credit because they came out and played us exactly the way a team looking for a result should.

They actually did what we did in the Champions League under Rodgers when we got horsed away from home.

Teams playing us have two choices.

Option 1 is you park the bus and defend.

Option 2 is you really go for it, press our defense heavy and hope your luck is in.

Unfortunately, they went for 2 and we whooped them as a result of the space they left us in midfield.

Jack Ross is getting the sack because his tactics are correct on paper, but the end result is a demolition and a massive morale problem.

Twitter:

@hp: Angeball We Never Stop. You just watched it .

@thecelticwiki: Because we didn’t get 10 Dundee Utd fans could always pretend to each other the previous nine didn’t matter.

@celticrumours: This is a celtic team playing the type of football we were brought up to believe was our birthright. Cavaliers v Roundheads as Caesar said.

Celtic’s Tannadice Tsunami – This is Pure Beautiful Inventive Football
By David Potter 28 August, 2022 1

Celtic’s Tannadice Tsunami – This is Pure Beautiful Inventive Football

Well, what can one say about this? In the first place, we must congratulate Ange and the bhoys for a magnificent display of attacking football with nine great goals – and let’s be honest, it really should have been closer to 20!

All the goals were good – my favourite was the second – and this was recognisably a team effort. Frankly it was football in the good old Celtic way – breathtaking, exhilarating, exciting, thrilling and totally satisfying. The nine goals will have outshone and upstaged all the sycophantic crap we heard about yesterday’s four with all these words like “Eurobounce” we’ll read in tomorrow morning’s papers.

A word of sympathy for Dundee United supporters, by no means the worst set of people in the world, many of whom made their feelings plain long before half-time. One is less sympathetic to the United Board who are clearly not coping with life at all, and with their Manager who seems to be the kiss of death wherever he goes.

“This is hurting me, I’m suffering from it. It doesn’t diminish my want to put it right. Every player should feel embarrassed, humiliated & struggle to sleep tonight.”

— BBC Sport Scotland (@BBCSportScot) August 28, 2022

He must now go and allow Dundee United to bring in someone else (yet again) or he must have a total clear out. Myself, I tend to believe that he should now consider other forms of employment well away from football management.

There is the sobering thought for Celtic amidst all the euphoria and ecstasy that this was against the worst team in the Premier League. It would be a mistake to think that other teams will be quite as easy. Our next three games are all against teams beginning with the letter R. It would be nice if we could beat all of them 9-0, but I’ve a funny feeling that might not happen! Still 1-0, 1-0 and 1-0 would be good enough to be going on with!

But Ross County first. The big enemy here is complacency and taking them too easily. I know we gave them a bit of a doing a few weeks back, but Wednesday night will be different, and it will be a Cup-tie. We have come a cropper to Ross County more than once in the past.

A slip here and there can be no Treble. But it is difficult, on the basis of the Tannadice tsunami to see any other result than a comfortable Celtic win.

Congratulations once again to the team and to the Manager!

David Potter

How Celtic were out of this world but Dundee United out of their minds in Tannadice tanking

It isn’t that often you have to hand it to the Celtic support for a song revival.

As it felt the goals were being fizzed in from all angles by Ange Postecoglou’s men at Tannadice in an almighty, sensational, blitz over a shot-to-pieces Dundee United, renditions of the old Lonnie Donegan number with the refrain ‘piling on the agony, putting on the style’ has never felt felt so apposite.

It is a relic from a mere seven-goal spree – the record 7-1 League Cup final bleaching of Rangers in 1957. Yet, even as it began to be heard with Kyogo Furuhashi completing a hat-trick in added time of the first period to make it, eh, just the 3-0, the sentiments easily translated to what was unfolding at Tayside. They proved prophetic too, with the seven racked up before the hour. Before the eighth took, surprisingly, another 17 minutes, that strike providing Liel Abada with his first triple for the club. The most frightening of frighteningly lop-sided encounters doesn’t begin to describe it. The ultimate one-sided encounter might be more accurate. It was an evisceration in which Celtic were imperious while Jack Ross’s men proved excruciatingly inept. Consider what it says about the contrasting direction of travel for the Scottish champions and a Tannadice team now sporting the horrible, haunted look of cinch Premiership relegation contenders.

Goals are being served up in huge helpings in their outings; Celtic bagging them, United taking eye-watering beatings because of the concession of them. Postecoglou’s men have now plundered 21 goals in five straight league wins. Ross’s men, five games without a victory, have now coughed up a vomit-inducing 24 goals in that spell. Their manager used to have a penchant for wearing tight-fitting clothes. Even if he chose to stick on a size 52-collared shirt, he would feel it was choking him right now. Little over two months in post, he has presided over the joint-worst European defeat for a Scottish club owing to the 7-0 mauling in Alkmaar, and, with this spectacular 9-0 flailing, the nation’s biggest home top flight defeat of this millennium.

As always with such slayings, it was difficult to fathom if Celtic were just out of this world, or the Tannadice men out of their minds in allowing Postecoglou’s men to pick them off at will. Impossible to pin down in final third, they could pierce their opponents down either flank with their slick passing and movement with such incredible ease. United’s high line played into their hands, and with Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate and the front three of Furuhashi, Abada and Jota constantly on the move, they left their tangerine shirted markers looking like training ground cones. The rout – which followed a six-minute break for Joe Hart to receive treatment after being caught in the head accidently by Steven Fletcher – began in the fashion it would progress. A quarter of an hour in, Abada had the presence of mind to pick out Jota down the left as he burst forward in tandem with a then offside Furuhashi. The cross in from the Portuguese found the striker in play to control the ball and drill into the corner. His second goal after 40 minutes was a glorious hit. The ubiquitious O’Riley nicked the ball off Scott McMann to push it into his path 22 yards out, but even then there still seemed little danger. Until he connected so sweetly to curl sublimely into the top corner. So began a run of six goals in 20 minutes of actual playing time, his hat-trick completed in added time of the opening period when United were slashed to ribbons by O’Riley sweeping over a cross cut back to him by Abada. O’Riley was creator extraordinaire again at the end of the six minutes played for the Hart’s injury stoppage. Slipped in by Abada down the right channel, he centred for Jota to tap in.

Celtic remained ravenous when the whistle sounded for the second period to begin, as United returned in body but not spirit from the dressing room. By then, the home stands had largely emptied but the fact that any of the United faithful stayed suggested they have a strain within their support that must be prone to masochism. On the pitch, their team gave the impression of not still being around as Celtic passed round, through and beyond them. It was as if they were faced with 22 not 11 players as they seemed unable to quell Celtic’s maurading. There were no tackles, tugs or frustrations in evidence, just acceptance. It could have been 15-0 all-too-easily as goal no.5 arrived in 50 minutes when Jota fed O’Riley and he in turn knocked inside for Abada to side-foot in. The sixth five minutes later was cringeworthy as Josip Juranovic had an edge of the area free-kick blocked by the United wall – a block! – only to squeeze a second shooting attempt past keeper Carjahan Eriksson at his near post. A desperate moment for the home men to add to a warehouse full of them. Likewise, when Abada was able to stroke in from a Hatate byline cut-back just before the hour.

It could be read as Postecoglou taking pity on Ross and his men that Furuhashi, Jota, O’Riley and Hatate were then all withdrawn. But still the flogging continued, Abada bringing up his triple with the simplest touch to turn in a low cross from Daizen Maeda 77 minutes in before Carl Starfelt headed in Celtic’s final goal. Inside this no.9 will be dark and twisted reflections for an abject United.

Celtic set new Scottish top flight record with 9-0 win over Dundee United
Celtic have set a new record for the biggest away win in the Scottish top flight after a remarkable 9-0 win over Dundee United at Tannadice.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were in devastating form, scoring at will against a United side utterly bereft in confidence following a dismal start to the season that also included a 7-0 reverse away at AZ Alkmaar in the Europa Conference League.

Celtic were 5-0 ahead at half-time after a Kyogo Furuhashi hat-trick was followed by strikes from Liel Abada and Jota.

Abada added a further two goals after the break to complete his own treble while Josip Juranovic and Carl Starfelt were also on the scoresheet as the Hoops piled the misery on Jack Ross’ hapless outfit.

The 9-0 win eclipsed the previous record held by Celtic for the biggest away win since the formation of the Scottish Premier League, now known as the Scottish Premiership, in 1998, namely an 8-1 win over Dunfermline at East End Park in 2006.

Ange Postecoglou hails ‘respectful’ Celtic but admits: ‘I don’t think Jack Ross needs my sympathy’
Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou homed in on his team’s respect following their outrageous 9-0 stuffing of Dundee United.

The Scottish champions were merciless in their Tannadice mauling with five of their nine goals coming subsequent to the interval, by which time Kyogo Furuhashi had snared a hat-trick. Liel Abada added another triple but in a sober reflection, Postecolgou essentially pointed to the absence of showboating and the remorseless pursuit of team goals as they punished a home team that were pitiful, and declared by their beleaguered manager Jack Ross as being an embarrassment as they were humiliated.

“What is important is the manner which we went about it,” said the Celtic manager when asked if his team could have reached double-figures on an afternoon they dished out the biggest away win in the Scottish top flight this millennium.

“I am always respectful of this game, you need to stay humble and you can’t get too ahead of yourself or this game will drag you back down. I thought right to the end we were respectful. We understood that we had a vulnerable opponent but there was no getting away from being disciplined.

Kyogo celebrates his hat-trick – his second for Celtic

Celtic strolled to an incredible record-breaking away league victory by humiliating beleaguered Dundee United to climb back to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Ange Postecoglou’s side looked utterly irresistible in attack as they scored nine goals for the first time in 12 years to inflict United’s worst ever home defeat.

Hat-tricks from Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada blew away their hosts at Tannadice, with Jota, Josip Juranovic and Carl Starfelt also scoring.

It means Celtic are two points clear of Rangers at the summit of the Premiership, while Jack Ross’ side have now lost five on the spin to sit anchored at the bottom with a solitary point from the opening day.

Reaction & as it happened

It took Celtic 15 minutes to open the scoring, slicing United apart on the first of many occasions. Abada split the home defence with a through ball, finding Jota, whose cross met an unmarked Kyogo.

Carljohan Eriksson then produced a few fine saves, but his afternoon would only go downhill from there. The second goal was perhaps the pick of the bunch, Kyogo curling in a first-time effort from 25 yards straight into the top corner.

Matt O’Riley combined with Abada to create the third, once again finding Kyogo – who had the freedom of Dundee to tap home his hat-trick.

There was still time in the first half for a fourth. Another tap in, this time for Jota, who may have been offside.

The half-time whistle was sweet relief for United, if only for 15 minutes. Abada got his first soon after the restart when, yet again, Celtic ruthlessly cut their hosts open. Jota found O’Riley who squared across for the winger to add the fifth.

The sixth was comical. Celtic’s free-kick routine resulted in O’Riley drilling the ball into a crouched Reo Hatate, but the ball came back to Josip Juranovic off his team-mate to then drive into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Hatate set up the next goal, this time deliberately. Once again, Celtic waltzed through a gaping United defence, with the Japanese midfielder squaring for Abada to finish with ease.

The Israeli scored his hat-trick when he got onto the end of substitute Daizen Maeda’s deflected cross, to dink over Eriksson with his final touch of the game.

Not content with eight, defender Starfelt got in on the act, nodding in a corner to break a record that has stood for 34 years – when they beat Hamilton Accies 8-0 away from home.

Unstoppable Celtic batter bruised United in record-shattering victory – analysis

Ange Postecoglou said before kick-off that when Celtic are at their best, they are hard to stop. He might have been selling his team short.

Time and time again his side sliced open a porous United defence who looked shell-shocked, conceding eight goals in an hour of football.

Some of the build-up play as Celtic crept towards the box was almost menacing, such was the inevitability of a goal.

They were untouchable, insatiable, irresistible. United had been warned this is what Celtic can do, after Kilmarnock were similarly eviscerated. They did not pay heed.

Twenty-one goals in five games. Their record for a league season is 116.
What they said

Dundee United manager Jack Ross: “Humiliating and embarrassing. For me, as manager, to be in charge of the team that delivered that. For the players to be part of it. For the football club.

“We offer them an apology because it’s nowhere near good enough. You shouldn’t concede that number of goals at any level of football, irrespective of the standard of the opponent.
Dundee United manager Jack Ross reacts to his team’s 9-0 home defeat to Celtic.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “Our intent is to keep going and not let the scoreboard or the circumstances dictate how we go about things, and the boys were disciplined today.

“We knew Dundee United were going through a rough spell and they were probably a bit vulnerable today. We got on top of them early which allowed us to play our football.”
What’s next?

Both sides are in midweek League Cup action as the competition reaches the last 16. United travel to Livingston, while Celtic travel north to Ross County (both 19:45 BST)
