Trivia

  • KO: 12:00 Sunday; Sky Sports
  • Celtic remain 4 pts in front with +13 GD ahead of second place Sevco.
  • Back to the league after elimination from European competition for the season. Next week’s away to Madrid is final European game for the season.
  • Ange Postecoglue’s 50th League game in charge, he’s won 126/150 points, averaging 4 wins every 5 games and a goal difference of +103
  • Mooy accidentally knocked over the referee (Willie Collum) to get one of the loudest cheers of the day!
  • Celtic’s first penalty since April, and we miss it! Jota scores on return from injury.
  • Celtic received an allocation of 7,368 tickets for the fixture.
  • VAR in second week of operation in Scotland. So far a shambles. Willie Collum missed a handball in the box, which he was referred to review by VAR officials, and duly Celtic awarded a penalty (which Giakoumakis missed!). Celtic’s first VAR domestically in their favour.
  • Ex Celt Efe Ambrose has joined Greenock Morton.
  • Adidas: Celtic set to release fourth kit as Adidas target Christmas Market!
  • The Daily Mirror is claiming that Celtic & Sevco may be approached by the principal clubs of the European Super League – Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus – as they are becoming increasingly frustrated by their breakaway battle from UEFA. Few convinced by this.
  • Sevco: John Lundstram insists Celtic only top the table ahead of Rangers because of their own failings
  • Ex Celt and now Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable 70-match unbeaten home record at Anfield in the EPL came to an end in a surprise loss to Leeds United
  • Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti: “Systems no longer exist in football, it’s all about the spaces left by the opposition. You must be quick to spot them and know the right moment to strike, have the courage to start the move even when pressed. There are no tactical schemes anymore. The spaces are no longer between the lines but among players. The skill is in finding them. I agree on evolution of tactical schemes but would say the skill is in manipulating opponents to create spaces rather than simply finding the space.”(currently one of the in form teams in Europe, top of Serie A)
  • T20 cricket world cup: Ireland beat England!
  • Celtic FC Foundation‘s to donate £400k to help those in fuel crisis. Respect.
  • Sevco fans planned a silent protest at their match v Aberdeen due to the current malaise at their club. Sevco won 4-1.
  • Business: Elon Musk has closed his $44bn deal to take Twitter private.
  • Ex Hun manager & thug Graeme Souness urges Sevco and Celtic to build SHARED stadium to unlock EPL riches! Ridiculous nonsense.

Summary

jbj712 of KDS:
Very good controlled performance on a truly dreadful surface.
Only Gollum could manage to book 3 CFC players in that game.
Livi were allowed to literally manhandle our players all day with no free kicks being awarded.
Haksabanovic must have been wondering what sort of league is this where the defender can pull you all the time and then fall over and the ref gives him the foul.
Class strikes for all the goals.
Thought it was Mooy’s best performance.
CBs dealt well with the big centre forward after a bit of a shaky start and O’Riley gave them good cover when required.
Livingston got what they deserved absolutely nothing.
If we stay at least 4 points ahead until the break then we will be strong favourites to win the league by a comfortable distance.

@agentscotland: Considering it’s a ground that’s well renowned for giving them problems that was an excellent performance from Celtic, totally controlled the game, were patient when they had to be and deadly when they created their opportunities, Greg Taylor MOTM for me, another top performance.

@thecelticwiki: Livingston play Antipasto football
@hp: Fair to say Willie Collum is a clear and obvious error.

Celtic now a different animal in Livingston as returning Jota takes things up a level

Celtic winning at Livingston is not a result you would have bet your mortgage on in recent times, but Ange Postecoglou’s side are a different animal to the one that always seemed likely dropped points in West Lothian before his arrival.

The league leaders had won only one of their previous six Scottish Premiership visits, which came under the Australian at the second attempt last season, so there would have been no danger of his players looking beyond the danger posed at the Tony Macaroni Arena ahead of a trip to the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Hoops could even afford to miss their first penalty award of the season as an early opener from Kyogo Furuhashi, added to in the second half by Greg Taylor, fittingly scoring on his 100th appearance, and substitute Jota netting on his return from injury, earned them as comfortable a 3-0 win as they could have hoped for ahead of facing the European champions as they restored their four-point advantage over Rangers at the top of the Premiership standings.

Livingston’s often-maligned artificial surface – combined with the hosts putting everyone bar Joel Nouble behind the ball – were undoubted factors in Celtic producing a less free-flowing performance than of late. But despite struggling for penetration at times, they made their moments count, starting in the ninth minute when Furuhashi broke through the yellow wall, spinning between markers to latch onto Taylor’s delightful through ball before firing high past debutant goalkeeper Jack Hamilton at his near post. Celtic fans may have questioned their Japanese hitman for not looking at his best at times this season, but nine goals in 16 is a record that cannot be argued with.

Conceding so early did not alter David Martindale’s gameplan one bit. Livingston remained steadfast in their defensive approach, leaving Nouble to plough a lone furrow in attack. He did manage to ruffle Cameron Carter-Vickers’ feathers on occasion, with the US international earning a booking for grabbing a hold of his shirt, but for all the pair had a good old-fashioned tussle, it was all in vain as Livingston struggled to get bodies in support.

Celtic pressed and probed without looking overly likely to extend their lead before half-time. James Forrest cut in from the right and screwed a shot narrowly wide, while on the opposite side of the pitch, Sead Haksabanovic struggled to find any end product at all.

It was down to, arguably, Celtic’s player of the season so far to showcase himself again as left-back Taylor stepped forward to lash a shot through the legs of an unsighted Hamilton from 25 yards after a blocked Aaron Mooy shot spun invitingly into his path.

Jota stepped off the bench to rapturous applause from the Celtic fans in the 80th minute and within 30 seconds made the impact the starting wingers lacked with a run to the byline and a cross which deflected off the hand of Andrew Shinnie.

After initially awarding a goal-kick, referee Willie Collum was summoned to the VAR monitor and changed his decision to a penalty kick, which fellow sub Giorgos Giakoumakis failed to convert, striking the post.

Jota had the final say though, sweeping home a David Turnbull pass to remind of the difference he can make for Celtic in the final third.

Ange Postecoglou makes Real Madrid vow as Celtic boss hails ‘strong mentality’ in Livingston win

Ange Postecoglou praised the mentality of his Celtic players for coming through a traditionally tough fixture at Livingston and insisted they take the same approach into Wednesday’s Champions League clash at Real Madrid.
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-makes-real-madrid-vow-as-celtic-boss-hails-strong-mentality-in-livingston-win-3898913

Celtic claimed a decisive 3-0 win at the Tony Macaroni Arena to restore their four-point lead over Rangers at the top of the Premiership ahead of facing the European champions in their own back yard in their final group fixture.

Livingston had taken points from Celtic in five of their last six trips to the Tony Macaroni Arena but the league leaders were never in any danger of slipping up on this occasion with goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Greg Taylor and the returning Jota leaving Postecoglou thoroughly satisfied with the afternoon’s work ahead of the trip to Spain.

“Anyone who comes here knows they are in for a tough game, but I was really pleased,” the Celtic boss said. “We had a really strong mentality about our performance. It can become a really difficult game. Not that it was easy, but we controlled it playing our football. I thought our general play was good and our goals were good. We probably could have had two or three more and we dealt with their threats well.”

Postecoglou quickly turned his attention to Madrid and, after earning plaudits for sticking to his attacking principles against them in a 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park last month, the Australian insists his team will take the exact same approach into the Bernabeu on Wednesday in a bid to claim a famous win.

“What we’ve tried to do this whole Champions League campaign is experience it in the proper context of us testing ourselves,” he said. “As I keep saying, we’ve done that every game. I understand we’ve come up short and we know the areas we’ve come short in and will look to improve. They are not easy to improve but in every game we haven’t shied away from the contest or gone in fearing what the outcome may be if we take our normal approach.

“We’ve just gone in there and seen how we measure up and that’s what we’ll do on Wednesday. I think from that perspective I’m really proud of the players because it would have been easier to just go out there with damage limitation on your mind.

“But they are looking forward again to testing themselves because as I keep saying to them, the only way they’ll get something out of this experience is by not going into your shell and fearing what outcomes may be by taking as bold an approach as we can. “That’s what we’ve done. Yes we’re disappointed and wanted our results to be better but no-one can tell me we haven’t gone into each game playing our football and testing ourselves. Whether people think that deserves merit or not is kind of irrelevant to me because that gives me an accurate guage as to where we’re at. I’m under no illusions over the areas we need to improve in – netiher are the players – and we’ll only get to that space if we really test ourselves.”

Kyogo Furuhashi scores
Kyogo Furuhashi’s ninth goal of the season put Celtic in front

Celtic restored their four-point advantage at the top of the Scottish Premiership after cruising to a three-goal win at Livingston.

Kyogo Furuhashi lashed in at Jack Hamilton’s near post after being found by Greg Taylor early in the game, and the left-back’s piledriver went through the goalkeeper’s legs after the break.

Giorgos Giakoumakis missed a late penalty for the visitors after a VAR review of Andrew Shinnie’s handball, before fellow substitute Jota scored Celtic’s third.

The win moves Celtic clear of Rangers at the summit and was rarely in doubt at a venue where they have struggled in recent times.

Everything you need to know about Livingston
All the Celtic news and analysis

Livingston threatened to extend those woes early on but Joel Nouble could not get enough purchase on his shot at an early free-kick and it cost the hosts dearly.

Celtic moved forward, with Taylor releasing Kyogo into the box and the Japanese forward hammered the ball past Hamilton.

Kyogo was in again midway through the first half but Jack Fitzwater did enough to put the striker off as he shot wide.

James Forrest dragged a low shot wide after cutting in from the right and team-mate Aaron Mooy was similarly close from the inside left channel.

Taylor’s powerful shot was beaten away by Hamilton in the opening moments of the second half but the left-back’s next attempt would not be stopped.

It was deja vu for Livingston as an inviting opening turned into the concession of a goal.

Jason Holt’s control let him down in the Celtic penalty area after being found by Nouble and the visitors broke. Taylor was ready to pounce after Livi struggled to clear their lines, his shot flying through a flurry of players and Hamilton.

The goalkeeper’s wayward clearance then presented Forrest with the ball but he recovered after a timely intervention from Nicky Devlin.

Jota had made his comeback from injury off the bench and made an immediate impact with the cross that clipped the outstretched hand of Shinnie. The spot-kick was awarded after referee Willie Collum reviewed the video but Giakoumakis’ shot hit the outside of the left-hand post.

It mattered little, though, as Celtic soon added to their tally with sub David Turnbull crossing for Jota to finish from close range.

Livingston patience doesn’t pay off – analysis

After leading Rangers until stoppage time last week, Livingston were prepared to wait for their moments in attack in the hope of keeping Celtic at bay at the other end.

Nouble was tasked with holding the ball up and drawing Cameron Carter-Vickers into a contest. It yielded fruit with free-kicks won and an eventual yellow card for Carter-Vickers.

However, the early Nouble chance, Stephen Kelly’s low shot into the arms of Joe Hart and Holt’s poor touch at the crucial moment was as much as they could muster in the final third.

Key to Livingston’s draw at Ibrox had been their ability to defend crosses. Celtic scarcely went down that route, preferring instead to pass through their opponents in central areas, exemplified by the opening goal and some of their better chances.

The champions were proficient, if not spectacular against a side determined not to be the latest side on the end of a heavy Celtic tally.

But with just three points dropped from a possible 36 this season and nine overall in 2022, Ange Postecoglou’s side continue to make themselves strong favourites for successive titles.
What they said

Livingston manager David Martindale: “I’m disappointed in the manner of the goals we lost. You’ve not really got a plan B at times when you go behind one goal so early in the game. It’s really, really difficult to then change the game.

“Celtic merited the points but we were very, very naive in certain moments of the game and those moments led to big goals.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “The few times they got throw-ins into the box or free-kicks, we dealt with them really well and our football was good after that.

“Our form from the start of the year has been really strong. Our performances have hit a really consistent note and we need that to continue.”
What’s next?

Livingston travel to visit Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Friday (19:45 GMT). Celtic conclude their Champions League campaign away to Real Madrid on Wednesday (17:45) then host Dundee United in the Premiership on Saturday (15:00).
