Summary

Ange “We did well without CalMac but he makes our team so much better. He made sure we didn’t get anxious and bide our time. He’s also a bit rusty to be fair!”

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin defended his team’s ultra-conservative approach despite losing 1-0 at home to Celtic in the cinch Premiership.

Ange “I can’t remember a game when we were so dominant. Got our just rewards in the end after totally dominating”.

Journalist Tom English: @TEnglishSport · Dec 17 Aberdeen at home and in good home form – 19% possession, zero shots on target. Celtic 10 on target, 33 attempts overall. Dons got what they deserved. Negative beyond belief. Showed no belief in themselves. Do the fans really want to see their team play that way?

JohnBoy of KDS:
Patience was the order for the day and not my greatest trait tbh, so was getting very frustrated the longer the game went on.
Never expected the sheep to be so negative with such an anti football approach, yet it still required CCV and starfelt to be on there game with winning every one on one situation, as 1 mistake from either could have been very costly still.
Still think the sheep could get something from the scum with the same approach on Tuesday myself, we might not be so critical then? Even if it’s a very poor advert for the Scottish game.
Calmac superb upon his return and deserved such a fantastic winner.
Possibly need to get well used to this anti football approach against ourselves, just need to find the goal earlier within such games to draw teams out more and allows us to cut them open far easier in the future.
Been more clinical in front of goal will also help matters also.
Overall nothing to much to complain about performance wise imo, as our sharpness and tempo will improve.
Delighted with the result, so a great day imo.

El Salto of KDS:
A great win in the end against a team who had no interest in playing for a win, they set out from minute one to defend, timewaste, dive (thankfully McLean was only fooled once) and generally spoil. If Aberdeen want to point to reasons why their stadium is only two thirds full for the visit of the Champions, there’s a good starting point.
Celtic thoroughly deserved the win, they were relentless with possession and pushing forward, but in the first half we were way off it. Maeda, Ralston, O’Riley were very poor.
Second half with the introduction of Abada we looked more likely, but I must admit, I had almost given up on seeing a winner till CMG stepped up with a great goal.
It’s glaringly obvious now that we need another striker, maybe even two if the GG unrest is true, because we can’t keep missing chances like that in the six yard box, and in one of these games we won’t find a long range winner like today.
Best for me were Taylor, the centre backs, McGregor, Abada and Forrest. Very disappointed in Kyogo, Hatate, MOR, Maeda, Jota and GG when he came on.
Goodwin will change tack on Tuesday, open up against sevco and get his arse handed to him. (That’s reverse voodoo)

Twitter:

HP: Needing a bit more intensity in front of and in the box , Aberdeen quite happy to shuffle us across the park 30 yards out. Time for Giakoumakis to come on and make an impact, Kyogo anonymous due to the way Aberdeen are defending deep. Interesting second half coming up .Aberdeens tactics got them exactly what they deserved out of the game. Huge 3 points for the champions as interested onlookers from other challengers looked on and have got that sick feeling in their throat. Well done Celtic. We Never Stop

Liam Kelly @cfcliamk96 · Dec 17 Has any Celtic striker missed as many sitters as Kyogo in the last 20 years? He’s a decent player with a lot of goals but he still misses some amount of golden chances. A shocking miss at a really important moment

Etims: Brilliant brilliant play from Jamesy, me and my dug and there’s Captain CalMac with a rasper into the bottom corner 1-0

Aberdeen 0-1 Celtic – That’s Why We’re Champions – Calmac’s Wonderful Winner

Aberdeen 0-1 Celtic – That’s Why We’re Champions – Calmac’s Wonderful Winner

Celtic restored a nine points advantage over our nearest challengers this afternoon after a richly deserved 1-0 win over a doggedly defensive Aberdeen side that took parking the bus to an entirely new level.

Jim Goodwin adopted similar tactics to his St Mirren side’s win at Celtic Park in the Covid bounce-match season and maybe was beginning to think he was going to steal a point today before a crafty wee flick from Jamesy Forrest gave his skipper Callum McGregor the opportunity to fire across the Aberdeen goal and into the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

That incidentally was the 200th goal scored by Celtic under Ange Postecolgou with 100 being at Celtic Park and 100 on the road. And it was also the 100th assist for Jamesy Forrest who has now achieved a century of both goals and assists for the club in what has been a remarkable career for this hugely under-rated Celtic legend.

Celtic had 81% of possession and made more passes but it was beginning to look like one of those days with plentiful of Ibrox eyes on this game praying that the other team couldn’t find the breakthrough. If you were unfortunate enough to be an Aberdeen supporter you’d have every right to feel short-changed by Goodwin’s tactics on home soil.

It took around a quarter of an hour of sustained Celtic pressure before Jota made the keeper work. Then Hatate’s effort on 20 minutes was stopped by Roos who then knocked away the loose ball with his foot with Maeda eyeing a tap-in.

Celtic enjoyed total control of the ball but failed to penetrate the deep lying Aberdeen defence of eight players camped in and around their own box.

Ange Postecoglou had seen enough at the interval replacing Maeda with Liel Abada and the Israeli certainly made an instant impact. Ralston and Abada enjoy a great understanding and the full-back put through a sensational ball to the Celtic substitute on 52 minutes, his cut back was superb but with the goal at his mercy Kyogo failed to connect properly and the chance was missed. It was an absolute sitter that is now irrelevant given the eventual outcome of the match.

Then O’Riley sent Abada through but his shot hit the Aberdeen legs. The Celtic pressure was relentless, Hatate then Jota tried to break the deadlock from the edge of the area but both were like so many others today, off-target.

Abada continued to impress on the right wing and put in a wonderful cross that three teammates all failed to tap home. The ball was collected by Greg Taylor at the other side of the box and his cross was missed by the trio too! Next O’Riley’s curled effort was comfortably saved, Ralston and Taylor then blasted efforts over the bar as things started to look desperate. Then Ralston got to the byeline and crossed for Kyogo but with the ball slightly behind him he could only steer the shot inches wide.

KYOGO AGAIN SO CLOSE 😰

With 72 minutes Ange Postcoglou looked to his bench, bringing on Turnbull, Giakoumakis and James Forrest with Kyogo, Hatate and Jota going off. Former Celt Jonny Hayes came on for the home side and probably did more in an attacking sense than all of his teammates combined over the 94 minutes.

All three subs had efforts on goal but it was the same old, frustrating story for the 1800 Celtic fans – including Lubo98 of this parish – and the hundreds of thousands watching on Sky or Celtic TV.

Then with 86 minutes played Celtic got the breakthrough, Forrest slipped a wee pass around the corner at the left hand side and The Celtic captain’s brilliant strike went across the Aberdeen keeper to find the far side bottom corner. It was Celtic’s 33rd effort on goal and and at last one found the back of the net.

Aberdeen tried to do something offensively after that but it was half-hearted and Joe Hart needed the match without having a save to make. The match ended with a brilliant run from James Forrest down the touchline from the half-way line to win Celtic a corner. And that killed off any hopes of a shock Aberdeen equaliser as the referee’s whistle sounded.

Kyogo let the post match dancing in-front of the trailing support but the captain was just behind him as was the manager who certainly enjoyed his own version of Last Christmas.

Next up in this Scottish Premiership title race is a trip to Aberdeen by theRangers on Tuesday night before Celtic play Livingston on Wednesday at Celtic Park. But for now, thanks to Man of the Match Callum McGregor it’s advantage Celtic with the nine points lead at the top of the league looking down on theRangers restored and of course on top of that Celtic have a massive goal difference advantage.

Here’s the winning goal from Callum McGregor…

Celtic have taken such a stranglehold of the cinch Premiership, there was no sense of jeopardy even when they were repelled by Aberdeen for almost 88 minutes at Pittodrie.

Ange Postecoglou’s men expected it, their travelling support expected it, the home players and their legions expected it and, heck, even the little robin then fluttering around the stadium expected it, a Celtic clincher would duly, inevitably, arrive. Everything appears to so seamlessly come together for the Scottish champions in the league domain, the tweeting bird probably had a wager on Callum McGregor being the visiting player to clatter in the winner. As the returning Celtic captain did in almighty fashion thanks to a searing low drive from the edge of the area, the ball having been back-heeled into his path by James Forrest.

It allowed the first game back after the five-week break – and McGregor’s first since he sustained a knee injury in early October – to tick every box for the runaway title leaders against a spectacularly unambitious Jim Goodwin side who elected to contest the encounter only in and around their own. The Aberdeen manager conceded such a niggardly approach – the home team weren’t in a low block so much as a block dug into the earth’s crust – had his followers giving out the grumbles from early on. However, with the Pittodrie back-five’s defending stout and studied, what it also ensured was that they didn’t give out easy chances to their opponents as had been the case when opening up for a 4-1 defeat at Ibrox last month, a day when Goodwin admitted they could have conceded 10.

Celtic, were they at their most slickly incisive, might well have dished out a bleaching to Aberdeen, three days before Goodwin’s men host Rangers. In all measures but the 1-0 scoreline, it was a completely lop-sided confrontation. Celtic had 81% possession, fashioned 33 goal attempts – Kyogo Furuhashi missed a pinch when he knocked wide from the middle of goal early in the second period – and had almost 900 passes. Indeed, in the metronomic McGregor, a player whose 170 completed passes outstripped that figure of 118 from a home team that had not one single effort on target. It wasn’t the easiest watch for the supports of either team, but Postecoglou was keen to commend his players for remaining at ease until the eventual arrival of the 200th goal of his 18-month tenure. Precisely 100 of these netted outwith the environs of Celtic Park. Also moving on to the century mark with his input to the winner was the career assist total for Forrest.
Aberdeen goalkeeper Kelle Roos was left powerless to stop McGregor’s strike.
Aberdeen goalkeeper Kelle Roos was left powerless to stop McGregor’s strike.

“It is probably as dominant a performance as we have had this year, maybe last year as well,” said the Celtic manager. “This is a difficult place to come to and I thought we controlled the game from start to finish. We did not get the goal until late which adds to the anxiety but there was zero of that in the lads’ performance. They stayed disciplined, stayed controlled – credit to them, I couldn’t be happier not just about the points but the way they went about things. It is not just about having the belief the goal will come but the way they went about it. You can get a little bit desperate. We had totally dominated, they had barely got into our half, let alone our box. Led by the skipper, the boys were controlled and disciplined and wore them down in the end. We got a bit more space, sometimes in football you do not get the rewards you deserve and today we did.

“Having a long break mid season is unusual but you try and do everything you can in terms of maintaining. We gave the boys a week off and I think it helped, watching them train they looked really refreshed in training. They looked ready to me but you don’t know til the game starts. I don’t know if you can teach patience. But it’s part of our process to play football in a certain way. You must have belief in that regardless of the scoreline or what minute it is in the game. We score a lot of late goals – and early goals – that’s because our approach doesn’t change. Home or away, we don’t change. Whether we’re behind or in front, we don’t change. The players understand that and drive it themselves. In that situation, they’re not looking for some magic formula to unlock the opposition. We just keep doing what we’re doing. Sometimes we score early and put games to bed. But the work we did today to constantly ask them questions got us the goal.”

Goodwin was only a handful of minutes away from an acceptable afternoon’s work. A minute is as much as a month in the wrong direction, though, when such profound sacrificing of forward intent ultimately yields nothing. The Irishman didn’t need anyone to impress that on him. “The players put a lot into the game defensively and were very organised and committed,” said Goodwin. “We showed bags of concentration to get to the point where we were hoping to keep a clean sheet. Nobody had been doing that against Celtic, who have been scoring four, five.

“The goal is a fantastic strike and we felt it was going to take something like that to unlock our defence. It was a real bitter pill to swallow because we have put so much into it. Kelle Roos had a few saves in the first half but had very little to do in the second. If we had been sitting here with a 0-0 I would have been very happy but we didn’t get it. Celtic found it hard to break us down and were starting to force things.”

Celtic don’t force, and didn’t. They allowed nature – or, rather, the natural order of Scottish football – to run its course.

Ange Postecoglou says Celtic hero will be remembered ‘long after I’ve gone’ – but one player gets ‘dropped trophy’ quip

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou labelled Callum McGregor a player who will enjoy the ultimate posterity after he marked his comeback from injury with an imperious, matchwinning goal at Pittodrie.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou congratulates goalscorer and captain Callum McGregor after the win against Aberdeen.

The 29-year-old, out since October with a knee injury, ended the stubborn resistance of Aberdeen with an 87th-minute strike to give Celtic a 1-0 victory. But it was his fluid promptings as Celtic ran the entire encounter in their return following the winter break – McGregor, with 170, had more completed passes than the home team combined – that drew the highest possible praise from his manager.

“He was a bit rusty, wasn’t he,” Postecoglou quipped. “It doesn’t need me to say he’s an outstanding Celtic footballer who will be remembered long after I’m gone. And there’s more in him. He’s taken on the leadership role in the last year and a half and he’s grown in terms of his influence on the field.

“I said before the game, we did awfully well to cover his absence. It doesn’t take away from the fact he is just a fantastic footballer and he makes our team better. His ability to link up play in the way we want to play is crucial. He was key today, he was the one who sped up the game for us at times, at times slowed it down as we wore the opposition down.

“You would not know that he had missed so much football. He had an enormous number of passes and touches today and scored a fantastic goal. Am pleased for him because he has worked hard to get to this place, he is a credit to himself and to this football club. He is an outstanding leader.”

On an afternoon when Celtic had 33 goal attempts and 81% possession as they racked up 856 passes before claiming their 200th goal of Postecoglou’s 18-month era, the Australian could afford to be jocular over the absence of newly-crowned player of the month Sead Haksabanovic with a knock. “I think he picked up the award and dropped it on his foot,” he said of the winger expected to return for Wednesday’s hosting Livingston.

Celtic’s Callum McGregor scores to make it 1-0
Callum McGregor’s 87th-minute strike proved decisive on his first game for two months

Manager Ange Postecoglou says Celtic were “first rate in every department” as Callum McGregor’s late strike against Aberdeen maintained their nine-point lead in the Scottish Premiership.

McGregor – who was making his comeback after two months out with a knee injury – lashed into the net from 20 yards with three minutes of the 90 left.

It was Celtic’s 33rd shot at Pittodrie as they finally wore down Aberdeen’s deep defensive block, which ultimately proved fruitless as the hosts ended the match with two efforts on goal.

Postecoglou’s Celtic move back nine clear of Rangers, while Aberdeen will end the day in third place due to postponements elsewhere.

“Even if we had got a draw, I wouldn’t have been disappointed with our performance,” the Celtic boss told BBC Scotland.

“You’re always looking at what our approach was like, our football, our mentality. And I thought it was first rate in every department. Getting the goal is great because it rewards the players.

“It’s easier then for me to keep feeding into that and telling them to go down this road.”

It was fitting for Celtic that their lynchpin McGregor grabbed the crucial goal, having been out since early October, but it was just the latest example of the champions finding something at the death.

Ross County, St Johnstone, Motherwell and Dundee United have all been downed in the dying moments of games so far this term, and McGregor’s low shot into the bottom corner added Aberdeen to the list.

And while it took until the 87th minute, in truth Celtic should have had the game sewn up long before. Kyogo Furuhashi had the best chance of the lot, but somehow side-footed Liel Abada’s cross wide from a few yards out.

Aberdeen goalkeeper Kelle Roos denied Abada, Reo Hatate, Jota and others as the home side went close to clinging on to a valuable point.

But the fact they didn’t throws into question their defensive approach, as they barely completed 100 passes in the game and mustered two attempts on goal, both of which were well off target.

Celtic motor on as Aberdeen approach raises questions – analysis

Celtic scoring a late winner comes as absolutely no surprise – it’s what they have done so regularly in the last three months.

They were frustrated at times by the sheer number of bodies in the Aberdeen box, and probably could have played with some more width in the first half to try to stretch the opposing back five.

Abada made a difference after coming on at the break, and his great run and cross ought to have led to Kyogo opening the scoring. But overall the champions had total control and could have won more comfortably on another day.

Despite coming within minutes of claiming a point, this performance will draw plenty of criticism towards the tactics of Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin.

He spoke openly about taking inspiration from his old club St Mirren, who are the only side to beat Celtic domestically this season.

The set-up was identical, with a back five and midfield three shuttling across to outnumber Celtic’s wide players.

It worked to a point, except Aberdeen put far less pressure on Celtic when they had the ball than St Mirren, and were far less useful in the rare moments they did have the ball.

Goodwin has spoken of the confidence he has in his players and the attacking football they want to play, and have played at home, this season. This approach was contradictory to that.

The last time they played an Old Firm side they were far too open and were picked apart at Ibrox, but here they offered nothing.

Goodwin needs to find a happy medium against Glasgow’s big two, starting with the visit of Rangers to Pittodrie on Tuesday.
What they said

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin: “Extremely disappointed having conceded a goal late on having put in so much effort and commitment.

“We felt before the game that the best way to go was to sit off Celtic and deny them space in behind and try to hit them on the counter attack. We did that on one or two occasions in the first half but in the second half we weren’t able to get up the pitch unfortunately.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “That’s as dominant as we’ve been away from home at a difficult place. We got our goal late, but I thought our approach all the way through… we were disciplined and didn’t get frustrated.

“I couldn’t ask much more from the lads. Even though we didn’t win more comfortably – which we should have – when you win 1-0 in that manner it just shows the discipline and belief the boys have in the way we play.”
