Trivia

  • KO: 19:45 Wednesday; league match 22, match on Celtic TV PPV.
  • Freezing weather across the UK, esp North of Scotland.
  • Celtic remain in top spot +9pts ahead of Sevco, with now +23GD! Sevco won 3-2 v Killie but big result was Hearts 5-0 win v Aberdeen (managed by ex-Celt Jim Goodwin), and so cements Hearts in 3rd place.
  • Debut for Kobayashi, who for some is man of the match. Double for Kyogo (official MOTM). Turnbull gets a goal near the end, a fine driver into the back of the net. Abada had a great goal too, and possibly unlucky to have not been given a penalty early in the game. A brilliant save or two also from Joe Hart must be noted.
  • VAR used to review for every goal, but nothing contentious came of it.  A St Mirren goal got ruled out by VAR for offside (rightly). Fans though getting annoyed with length of time lost on VAR reviews.
  • Giakoumakis on the bench is ominous sign for his departure. CCV rested.
  • First meeting between the sides since recent passing away of Frank McGarvey who played for both sides. RIP. Buried on Monday just past.
  • Ex-Celt Davie Moyes expected to be cut as West Ham manager soon. Will Brendan Rodgers follow soon after for cut as Leicester manager?
  • IFAB rules against countdown clock trial but new FIFA guidelines will tell competitions to follow World Cup approach to added on time. So injury time expected to lengthen.
  • Snooker: Judd Trump wins final of the Masters in a classic match.
  • From @TheScotsman: “Mixed message A [Sevco] marketing campaign last year focused on an ideology of inclusivity – ‘Everyone, Anyone’ – a laudable and progressive step to move the club away from some of the cultural attitudes that belong to a different era. It makes little sense, then, to play in and promote an orange kit that carries unambiguous and irrevocable connotations with the very elements they wish to unshackle themselves from. (Alison McConnell)”

Transfer Window:

  • Contract extension for B Team captain, Matthew Anderson. The new deal sees the defender commit his future until June 2025.
  • Connor Hazard back with the first team squad

Reports

  • “We need to strengthen further,” Ange wants another signing.
  • Celtic after Hibs Kevin Nisbet, other reports claim no approach.
  • West Sydney Australia: rumours Calem Nieuwenhof may sign for @CelticFC and be loaned back to WSW.
  • Southampton interested in Josip Juranovic.
  • Celtic have put in an improved bid for Oh hyun-kyu of Suwon Bluewings. Move to Monza is off, not that anyone was convinced of this.

Summary

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I thought it was a really strong all-round performance. We did all the aspects of our game pretty well tonight. We started the game well.

“They have some threats, particularly from long throws, that you have to defend in the box and I thought we handled that well. It was four excellent goals and we had some great moves that didn’t end in goals.”

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson: “Celtic were excellent. I think the disappointing thing for me is we conceded two set plays – our first all year. They didn’t have to work for those two goals.

“We’ve done it fairly well up to now and shown that we do have the quality to break and pick passes, but we didn’t tonight and we had too many people not at the top of their game and you can’t come here and have that.”

Torquemada:A grand evening’s watch. We didn’t have a failure on the park although Starfelt continued his one-FFS Carl-a-game trend. Loved the way Yuki just slotted in as if this was his 50th game rather than his first. I just love the way Hatate plays the game. Great to see young Abada back on the score sheet. Kyogo put the best striker at the club debate to bed for all but the least sentient. St Mirren gave us a proper game – fair play to Robinson. He’s not the worst. When we come out to play, we are on a different level from every other team in this league. Unless the sky collapses, you can put a fork in this title race.

FatBoab of KDS; A much better performance on a much better surface. We were decent tonight all over the pitch barring one or two minor grumbles. Matt O’ Riley is seriously out of touch and could do with regaining some confidence, and Carl Starfelt looked a bit uncomfortable on the right side, but those aside, I thought we did well. New lad had as easy a debut as you’re likely to get and looked assured and confident. Nice to have a left footer on that side.
Hatate yet again was stellar, his pass for Kyogo was superb, equalled by the sublime finish, and Jota looked far more like himself on the left.
You have to feel a bit for teams when we bring on subs of the quality we now have to hand. Imagine trying to mark Kyogo for an hour then you look up and Maeda is coming on. Must be demoralising for our opponents.
All in all a very satisfying evening , four goals , no injuries, but cold as feck and happy to be tucked up in bed. Rotate the squad this weekend.

EM of KDS: Just a really good performance, moved the ball so well at times and the pressing was too notch till the end. Kyogo’s first goal was a sublime finish, he had a tiny target to hit given where the goalie was. Pardon the Celtic Da cliche but it really was Henrik like. Thought Kobayashi looked very good on the ball. He got caught badly wrong side of his man near the end, but he looked like he could take Starfelt’s place before too long… Need to see him defending at an away game before that mind.

@agentscotland : FT: Celtic 4-0 St MirrenDominant performance from Celtic, shaky start defensively but the early Abada goal settled them then after Kyogo made it 2 zip after a great ball from Hatate it was never in doubt, came out second half flying & killed the game stone dead before the subs.

@etims: FT #Celtic 4 St Mirren 0: Comfortable win tonight for Celtic. Couple of outstanding goals via Kyogo and Turnbull. Saints had a go and Joe pulled off a couple of great saves. Another three points safely secured.

Kyogo Furuhashi underlines his Celtic status with timely answer to Giorgos Giakoumakis protestations

Celtic supporters have worked themselves into a right lather over the inevitable-looking departure of Giorgos Giakoumakis.

It has all seemed over-wrought. As they were able to bathe in the brilliance of Kyogo Furuhashi that underpinned a 4-0 victory at home to St Mirren, maybe they would consider it was time to pull the plug on their protestations.

Giakoumakis was missing last night through soreness following his scoring cameo in the Viaplay Cup semi-final success over Kilmarnock on Saturday. That turn had prompted Celtic supporters to bemoan his unquestionable back-up status to the Japanese striker – believed to be the principal reason for his becoming unsettled – wasn’t astute squad management from Ange Postecoglou. The biggest grumblers even had gone so far as to argue that last years’ joint-top league scorer deserved equal status to the Australian’s statement signing from Vissel Kobe in the summer of 2021.

Giakoumakis is a fine forward. But he isn’t capable of the scoring sorcery served up by a Furuhashi with a double to down Stephen Robinson’s men. A quicksilver artist whose record for the season now reads 18 goals in 28 games. And who overall has netted 38 times in only 61 appearances since his £4.7m capture. On a night when his countryman Yuki Kobayashi made an assured debut – as the shakiness was confined to his defensive partner Carl Starfelt in the injury-absence of Cameron Carter-Vickers – Furuhashi produced one of the finishes of the season to put the Scottish champions two goals ahead in the 35th minute.

A goal that was all about infinitesimal angles and gaps, it came from Jota – teasingly twinkled toed all evening – clipping the ball down the inside left channel. Furuhashi did the rest in peeling off Charles Dunne, and with one extradorindarily deft touch, arcing the ball over the head of keeper Trevor Carson. It was a finish that seemed to play with the nature of geometry and pitch geography.

His second wasn’t as outlandish, but it was just as clinical. Arriving shortly after the interval, the same combo were involved with Jota squaring a cross that seemed to see Furuhashi pop up as if an apparition to force in. The immediate aftermath gave us one of several VAR calls – naturally – with the initial flagging of the counter for offside overturned by the technology. The striker’s mastery of movement can certainly deceive the naked eye.

The encounter was one in which Celtic proved loose at times at the back – St Mirren certainly showing up well at times in undoubtedly having a go – and lethal in attack. The annoyance for Robinson would no doubt be the first goal arriving from a set-piece, a corner resulting in penalty-box pinball. Starfelt initially drew a stupendous reaction save from Carson before his excellence proved criminally in vain within seconds, Kobayashi smacking the post before Liel Abada rammed in the rebound.

The cherry-on-top fourth was another stonking strike, substitute David Turnbull curling in a precision low drive from fully 25 yards in the 86th minute. St Mirren arrived in the east end of Glasgow as the last team to beat Celtic, both home and away. As they were taken apart by an irrepressible forward line, their 2-0 success in Paisley four months ago, felt like it belonged to another decade. As for their 2-1 success at the, then empty, Parkhead stadium two years ago in the dog days of Neil Lennon’s reign. Well, that feels like it was in a different century.

Ange Postecoglou ‘not playing ducks and drakes’ over Giorgos Giakoumakis as Celtic boss delivers rare VAR praise

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was content that VAR showed how it can work best on a night when the technology was deployed to check three goals flagged for offside.

Across the Scottish champions’ 4-0 thumping of St Mirren the system confirmed that the assistant referees had made the right calls for two incidents – one for Celtic and the other the visitors – they adjudged fell foul of offside. And in a third VAR overturned an on-field offside after Kyogo Furuhashi had plundered a second strike of the encounter shortly after the break for Celtic’s third of the evening.

Postecolgou has been left frustrated by VAR’s ruling on a number of occasions since its October introduction, but the definitives involved in how it was utilised in another three points for the runaway cinch Premiership leaders, as opposed to handball incidents, was homed in on by the Australian.

“I don’t think anyone has got an issue with offsides, that is what it is there for,” he said, also noting how the lengthy delays with the system that he has previously bemoaned were avoided. “It was fairly quick tonight, and I’m assuming they got them all right, so it’s all good.”

Meanwhile, the Celtic manager appeared to betray a weariness over the constant presumptions that Giorgos Giakoumakis’ exit from the club could come at any moment. The striker was not involved last night through injury as the rival who has restricted his game-time in Kyogo Furuhashi dazzled with a glorious lobbed finish for the first of two goals. But Postecoglou gave a sharp response that involved aviary imagery when asked if he was confident the player would still be at the club come Saturday’s Scottish Cup hosting of Morton.

“I see no reason why not,” he said. “I just deal with what is in front of me, and until I’m told otherwise or something significant happens. He was here tonight mate, so you could have asked him yourself… He’s still very much part of our set-up, I’m not playing ducks and drakes. He would have been involved tonight if he wasn’t injured.”

St Mirren counterpart Stephen Robinson acknowledged the finesse of Furuhashi in his post-match assessment but felt that did not entirely explain away the outcome. “The second goal is an incredible finish, sometimes you have to hold your hands up, but we feel we are better than what we showed,” he said. “We expected to put in a better fight than that. There was a lot of desire and energy but we just lacked a little bit of belief and quality when we landed on the ball for a 20-minute period and that killed us against a very good side.”

Celtic continued their formidable domestic home form with an emphatic Scottish Premiership win against St Mirren.

Liel Abada crashed in the opener after 15 minutes as St Mirren’s positive start was quickly extinguished.

Kyogo Furuhashi added a delicate lob before the break, and then finished off a sweeping move to ensure Celtic won an 11th consecutive home league game.

David Turnbull rifled in the fourth from 25 yards to seal the points.

Ange Postecoglou’s side remain nine points clear of rivals Rangers after convincingly seeing off the only Scottish side to beat them this season.

St Mirren, who drop to seventh, are also the last to win at Celtic Park domestically almost two years ago, and they threatened to cause the champions more problems after a bright start.

But two minutes after Curtis Main’s goal was ruled out for a tight offside, Abada smashed home from inside the box after Trevor Carson denied Carl Starfelt and debutant Yuki Kobayashi struck a post.

From that point, Celtic were in control. Reo Hatate’s wonderful pass in behind found Kyogo, who managed to acrobatically scoop the ball over the advancing Carson and into the net.

And the Japanese forward added his 18th goal of the season eight minutes into the second half as Celtic struck quickly when winning possession in their own half.

Jota was set free down the left and crossed for Kyogo side-foot home, and the original decision to disallow the strike for offside was overturned after a VAR check.

Kyogo was then confirmed as offside by VAR after setting up James Forrest for what Celtic thought was their fourth goal, which did arrive in spectacular fashion from Turnbull.

The substitute clinically drove a long-range shot past Carson after a short corner from Celtic, who extended their unbeaten domestic home record to 40 matches.

St Mirren have still only won once on the road but kept plugging away, and came close to a consolation goal when Declan Gallagher headed Ryan Strain’s cross on to the bar.

Tactical tweak helps Celtic settle – analysis

Celtic were sloppy before, and briefly after, Abada’s goal as St Mirren took the game to them. Full-backs Josip Juranovic – who was playing out of position on the left – and Alistair Johnston were crowded out by St Mirren whenever they came infield, as is regularly the case with Celtic.

Postecoglou presumably told them to keep their width, because they started hugging the touchlines more and gave St Mirren’s wing-backs and midfielders more to think about.

It stretched the visitors, and from there Celtic’s movement and skill out wide took hold and there only looked like one outcome. Kyogo was a joy to watch as his rapid changes of direction and clever movement proved a constant menace.

St Mirren, meanwhile, can be relatively pleased with their efforts. That seems strange given the scoreline, but they started strongly and kept going in attack throughout. Stephen Robinson’s side have only won one of their past 10 league games, but there is no immediate concern.

This is only the second time in that run they have lost by more than a goal, and they are far from the only Premiership team to go on a poor run. They need to respond quickly, but the evidence of this season so far is they will be pushing for a top-half finish.
