Trivia

  • Callum McGregor makes his 400th Celtic appearance today! 50th league match win for Postecoglu.
  • Oh makes his debut. Taylor returns from injury.
  • Sevco won day before so Celtic remain top by 9pts and GD of +23.
  • Sevco only one game short of reaching the half century for consecutive domestic games without the concession of a penalty. A sequence that stretches back just over a year, it is underpinned by 40 cinch Premiership games without giving away a spot kick. That is very questionable! link
  • Many people going through challenging times which is why @FoundationCFC are launching a new project – Paradise Pit Stop. Free warm meal and a selection of hot and soft drinks at Celtic Park every Monday and Thursday night between 5-7pm.
  • Former Celtic defender Kolo Toure sacked by Wigan Athletic, just 59 days into his tenure at the tier 2 club.
  • Aberdeen sack ex Celt Jim Goodwin as manager after 6-0 loss to Hibs.
  • Offensive & borderline racist dog whistling by Daily Record’s Keith Jackson: “And yet fate and good fortune have conspired to place both of them on either side of Scottish football’s great divide at a truly fascinating moment in time. What’s luck got to do with it? Well, had Eddie Howe’s feet not turned to ice at the thought of taking on the task of rebuilding Celtic then Postecoglou would probably still be ‘playing his football’ on the other side of the planet rather than bringing half the Far East with him to Glasgow. “
  • Ex-Celt Jack Hendry returns early to Club Brugge after loan at US Cremonese (Italy).
  • Ex-Celt Kieran Tierney reportedly attracting interest from Italy with his Arsenal future uncertain (Juventus and Inter Milan are keen).
  • Politics: PM Rishi Sunak dismisses Conservative Party chair Nadhim Zahawi following weeks of revelations about his tax affairs.

Transfer Window:

  • Juranovic sold to Union Berlin for £7.5m plus addons (est £10m total).
  • Moritz Jenz returned to parent club Lorient, he hasn’t featured since early November & will leave due to a lack of football. Moved to Schalke on loan.
  • Celtic youth player Eseosa Sule (16 years old) has reportedly agreed a move to West Brom.

Reports

  • David Turnbull insists he is unaware of any speculation linking him with exit from Celtic.
  • Greece head coach Gus Poyet has revealed Giorgos Giakoumakis’ imminent departure from Celtic is because of a lack of game time this season.  Celtic turned down Atlanta United’s offer of taking him on loan, with a £4m bid on the table from Urawa Red Diamonds.
  • With Jenz departure, no exit for Stephen Welsh?
  • Kevin Nisbet expected to complete a move from Hibernian to Millwall in the next 24 hours, but he pulled out of the move! Linked with Celtic and Sevco.

Summary

We had to earn it again today, but I thought the lads handled it really well.” Ange Postecoglou

Pre-match:  Dundee United midfielder Jamie McGrath says Celtic will come up against a different Tangerines side to the one the Scottish champions beat 9-0 at Tannadice earlier in the season when the teams meet on Tayside on Sunday.

Mooy shines as Celtic restore nine-point lead in Scottish Premiership

Dundee United 0-2 Celtic

AARON MOOY SCORED one goal and set up another as Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0 to restore their nine-point lead in the Scottish Premiership.

Jota headed home in the 51st minute after Mark Birighitti misjudged Mooy’s cross.

The Australian then benefited from Kieran Freeman’s handball a few minutes later as Celtic were given a VAR-assisted penalty after earlier seeing an award withdrawn.

It was another dominant victory for Celtic, if not getting close to their record-breaking win in their previous visit to Tannadice. The visitors had 18 efforts at goal to the home side’s four.

Both sides had transfer-linked strikers missing from their squad – Tony Watt and Giorgos Giakoumakis missing out, while Greg Taylor and Cameron Carter-Vickers returned from injury for the champions.

Celtic secured a record 9-0 victory on their previous visit to Tannadice in late August, a result which cost Jack Ross his job.

Liam Fox’s side had only lost once since the mid-season break though and they proved more difficult to break down, although Kyogo Furuhashi missed a decent chance inside 60 seconds.

Steven Fletcher looped a header on to the roof of Joe Hart’s net but it was otherwise one-way traffic as Celtic pressed United further back as the first half progressed.

Jota threatened three times after cutting in from the left, forcing two saves from Mark Birighitti, who pulled off a better one when Alistair Johnston played Furuhashi through.

Reo Hatate shot just wide from 18 yards and chipped the ball on to the inside of the far post in the 42nd minute before Craig Sibbald made an excellent block from Mooy in the six-yard box.

Celtic were awarded a penalty seconds later after Furuhashi went down between the close attention of Liam Smith and Birighitti, who punched the ball clear. However Don Robertson rescinded the decision after being called to the monitor.

Jota came close again just into the second half before putting Celtic ahead. Mooy’s cross drifted over the head of Birighitti, who seemed to be taken by surprise by the arrival of Jota at speed and the Portuguese winger squeezed a header in from a tight angle.

Celtic had their penalty five minutes later after Robertson was called to the monitor to view a handball claim against Freeman after Jota’s ball into the box struck the full-back. Freeman had moved his arm towards the ball and Robertson pointed to the spot but opted not to show a second yellow card.

Mooy sent fellow Australian Birighitti the wrong way to net his fifth goal in seven matches.

Hart twice held efforts from Fletcher and Hatate saw a shot saved but the main incident of note after the goals was an 82nd-minute debut for Celtic’s new signing, Oh Hyeon-gyu.

The South Korea striker did not see much of the ball as United enjoyed their best spell of possession, but Freeman sliced well wide after getting a half-chance to set up a comeback.

Celtic substitute Daizen Maeda headed over from three yards with the final action of the game.

Celtic’s result wasn’t remarkable at Tannadice – but jaws will have dropped at something else

The remarkable at Tannadice was not to be gleaned from the outcome.

Let’s be honest, it was pretty much a stick-on that a Celtic on an 18-game domestic unbeaten run comprising 17 wins would emerge victorious, and so restore their nine-point cinch Premiership lead. As they duly did with a 2-0 success that, all told, was fairly pedestrian in nature. No, the facet to cause jaws to drop to the floor of most Scottish football observers was VAR actually working perfectly. Like a dream. And not just once, but – and make sure you are sitting comfortably, now – twice. Any suggestions to the contrary requires would-be whingers to disregard overwhelming evidence.

Though Celtic practically had the ball to themselves for the opening 45 minutes, and pierced the home defences for several openings without reward as they moved them around, it wasn’t until the 43rd minute they looked set for a breakthrough. Only for VAR to force them to wait. Referee Don Robertson, at that juncture, pointed to the spot for keeper Mark Birighitti appearing to wipe out Kyogo Furuhashi as he thundered forward to punch away a cross. VAR operative Euan Anderson considered otherwise, and after he instructed Robertson to consult his pitchside monitor, Robertson came to the same conclusion and reversed his decision. The proper use of the technology, the keeper may have caught Furuhashi’s head with his left glove just as he contacted with the ball using his right arm. However, it was there to be won, and the Australian could not simply disappear after he propelled himself through the air to do so.

Only nine minutes into the second half, a VAR system that had then taken from Celtic, gave to them as it offered welcome assistance to Robertson. To provide the coup de grace only 100 seconds after Jota had put them one up. The second VAR involvement came through Robertson missing – as can happen – Kieran Freeman nuttily yanking his hand from his side upwards to deliberately nudge a ball that Jota had sought to flick behind him. Another trot over to his monitor for Robertson allowed him to make good on his omission and award a penalty that was rammed in from the increasingly influential Aaron Mooy for his fifth goal in only seven games. Three of these from 12 yards … despite the Celtic faithful forever chuntering that they never receive penalties.

It was the second crucial intervention from the Australian international following his integral part in the goal that broke the resistance of Laim Fox’s men that was always of the token variety. A fact that allowed Callum McGregor to stroll in his 400th club appearance. His midfielder confrere Mooy fashioned an exquisite arcing cross from the right that was misjudged by the all-in-a-fankle Birighitti, looping over him and dropped at the back post when Jota was on hand to nod in. As simple as Celtic’s afternoon, in truth.

“It was a strong performance and professional with the conditions today,” said Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou. “They worked really hard especially in the first half to try to block the gaps we were trying to create. Having said that we still go through on quite a number of occasion we just lacked a bit of our quality inside the box and alertness. We rectified that in the second half. On a difficult day I thought we handled it really well.”

Celtic restored their nine-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they ground down Dundee United’s stubborn resistance after the break.

The Glasgow side recorded the biggest away league win in the club’s history with a 9-0 thumping of United on their last visit to Tannadice in August.

A more resilient United held out until Jota headed home an Aaron Mooy cross.

Five minutes later, Mooy slotted home a penalty after Jota’s flick struck Kieran Freeman’s hand.

Celtic’s fifth game in a row without conceding means they have scored 18 times and lost just one goal in their last five visits to Tannadice.

It leaves United third bottom on goal difference, tied on points with Motherwell, Ross County and Kilmarnock, and without a win against Celtic in 19 games since a 2-1 win at Tannadice in December 2014.

Reaction & as it happened

Both managers agreed pre-match that United are a different beast since that August humiliation.

Not surprisingly, though, Mark Birighitti was the busier goalkeeper, the Australian being fortunate not to see a clearance charged down by Kyogo Furuhashi nestling behind him before blocking at the Japanese striker’s feet after also saving low from a Jota drive.

Craig Sibbald blocked from midfield counterpart Mooy in front of the United goal before Birighitti bravely punched clear off the head of Kyogo only to see referee Don Robertson point to the penalty spot after the striker was also caught by the goalkeeper as he came for the ball.

Robertson was instructed to have a check on the screen and reversed his decision.

However, there was no reprieve shortly after half time when Birighitti appeared to lose his bearings as Mooy launched a deep cross and Jota headed in precisely from a difficult angle.

Celtic ensured the victory soon after as Freeman stuck out a hand and Mooy was given the opportunity from the penalty spot to slot his third goal in two games as the visitors could comfortably afford a close-range miss from Daizen Maeda in the dying seconds.

Numbers add up in Celtic’s favour – analysis

There was no record scoreline this time, but it was still a game of big numbers at Tannadice.

Celtic have gone 19 domestic games unbeaten since their one defeat of the season away to St Mirren in September, a draw away to second-top Rangers being their only mini-blip.

It was a 50th win in 61 Premiership games under Ange Postecoglou, reaching that landmark in the same number of games as Brendan Rodgers – only Martin O’Neill has done it quicker, by two games.

Captain Callum McGregor was faultless in midfield on his 400th Celtic appearance and there was a first off the bench for Oh Hyeon-gyu, the South Korea striker signed in midweek from Suwon Samsung Bluewings and the latest man to strengthen a squad that is already looking incredibly strong domestically.

United captain Ryan Edwards suffered defeat as he returned to the starting line-up to make his 100th club appearance, but his side look to have continued the improvement suggested by their November visit to Celtic Park, where they only lost courtesy of two stoppage-time goals.

They could not match their own two goals this time and rarely troubled visiting goalkeeper Joe Hart, but they have still only lost three times in nine outings and their gritty performance will give manager Liam Fox grounds for thinking they can move clear of relegation trouble.
What they said

Dundee United head coach Liam Fox: “I can’t take positives right now, I’m sore and disappointed. We’ve got a huge game on Wednesday so we have no time to feel sorry for ourselves.

“I was pleased to get in at 0-0 at half-time – I thought in the last parts we were just surviving. We had to be braver on the ball, better in possession, because we didn’t threaten enough for my liking. We conceded two quick goals and the rest of the afternoon becomes very difficult.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I thought we handled it well, difficult conditions. They were really disciplined in their structure, particularly the first half. Having said that, we still got behind them on a number of occasions.

“We missed that final touch and quality, but we started the second half really well, scored a couple goals and could have scored a couple more. A really strong performance.”
