Trivia

  • KO: 12:00; Sunday; Sky Sports TV, League match 25
  • Celtic remain 9pts ahead on points on the top of the league with now a 25GD difference over Sevco in second place.
  • An unofficial campaign by St Johnstone fans to turn up for their own game after they boycotted their home Scottish Cup game v Sevco due to allocation of tickets dispute. But their turnout was poor!
  • St J pitch was a shambles, pot marked and in a poor state to play on.
  • Aaron Mooy has 6 goals & 3 assists in his last nine appearances, I don’t think it’s unfair to say he’s probably played himself into being included in Ange’s strongest team, O’Riley’s time will come again but Mooy is producing so much so frequently it’s impossible to overlook him.
  • James McCarthy back in training.
  • Andy Considine’s 600th match (571 with Aberdeen) BUT not one to remember. Scored own goal and then at the end of the match was sent off which led to a free kick from which Celtic scored.
  • Sky Sports is unlikely to take up its full allocation of live Scottish Premiership fixtures for the third season running.
  • Michael Beale’s comments about Celtic counterpart Ange Postecoglou being a “lucky” manager lacked self-awareness and class, says former Parkhead striker Chris Sutton.
  • Reo Hatate has worked closely with first-team coach Gavin Strachan to improve his game, manager Ange Postecoglou has revealed, and the Japan international is “always the first in the door after a game asking for feedback”.
  • Up to 40 countries could boycott the next Olympic Games, making the whole event pointless, said Poland’s sport and tourism minister Kamil Bortniczuk.
  • Our support to @HibernianFC chairman Ron Gordon who is battling cancer .
  • Rugby: Six Nations started day before. Ireland smashed Wales, Scotland defeated England.

Summary

Mooymania: “Yeah it’s an enjoyable place to play,” Aaron’s a happy Bhoy

Everything Celtic @aboutceltic: 10 assists for Matt O’Riley in the Scottish Premiership this season

Ex-Celt Chris Sutton: I thought today might be tricky for Celtic… what do I know!!! What has been incredible is the high standards and level of performance this current Celtic team keep churning out week after week. It’s really not an easy thing to do. Total respect… but still work to do

@harry brady: We take far far too long checking offsides with VAR in Scotland.

jbj712 of KDS:
A controlled professional performance rather than a swashbuckling one no doubt caused by the poor pitch. Nit picking you could say that McGregor and Hatate were below average by their own high standards.
Still far too good for the opposition though Ange will be disappointed about the number of unopposed crosses that we allowed in the second half.
Good to see the weekend finish and we’re in a stronger position than we were before it having added another 2 goals to our GD v Sevco!

san meegs of KDS:
A tougher test than the scoreline suggests. The pitch and their propensity for getting in behind us to get crosses in continually made it difficult. Thought their number 34 looked good, cracking bit of skill in the second half too. Mooy was excellent yet again. He can’t be dropped for Hampden on current form. Just hope the manager sticks with his guns this time unlike the game last month.

‘I can’t ignore it’ – Ange Postecoglou admits losing temper over certain Celtic player ‘behaviours’

Celtic have been so relentless under Ange Postecoglou that it would be hard to imagine the Australian ever having cause to lose his rag with his players.
Matthew Elder

However, the 57-year-old admits there have been occasions across his Parkhead tenure where he has been forced to show his angry side in dealing with certain “behaviours” that have not been to his liking. Supporters got a public glimpse of his temper in a Scottish Cup tie against Raith Rovers in February last year when an enraged Postecoglou could be heard on camera screaming at his players to stop passing the ball backwards. Such scoldings have also been served behind closed doors whenever the standards which have taken Celtic to another level under their current boss are not maintained.

“I’ve had my moments here, it’s fair to say!” he revealed. “People might be surprised because they might not have been at the most obvious times for some people. It’s not about getting angry or having a blast just for the sake of it. It’s about whether I feel something isn’t as it should be. Usually it’s around – not so much the game or results – but behaviours. If I see a behaviour that I don’t think fits in, I’ll make sure the player and the group knows about it. That’s my role. I can’t ignore it or let it go and be nice. That’s what everyone expects of me. If someone displays something that I don’t think fits in, I’ll have no hesitation in telling them it needs to be addressed.”

Postecoglou will hope he has no need to spit feathers in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off at St Johnstone as Celtic look to continue their incredible league form. The Hoops have lost just once in their 24 Premiership outings to date, scoring 74 goals in the process, in defence of the title won last season.

“The first thing we do is ignore the stats. They can get you thinking you’re in a comfortable space,” Posteocglou explained. “It’s just the environment we create here. That’s what I’ve done here from day one. These guys come in and no day or minute is wasted.

“When you have that, you don’t really worry about stats or form. You know that’s irrelevant and in the past. What’s important is what the next step is. That’s the key. Look at our squad right now, it’s the strongest it’s been since I arrived at the club. Training every day is really intense.

“The players can’t come in here and try to cruise through because they’ll get found out straight away. And they’ll lose their position. It just doesn’t allow for it. We have healthy competition. It’s not about anyone wanting others to fail. It’s about wanting everyone to succeed and push each other to the next level.”

Only three of the Celtic squad are out of contract in 2024 and asked whether he wants Joe Hart, David Turnbull and Aaron Mooy to stay beyond next summer, Postecoglou replied: “Yeah but it’s just about having discussions with the players themselves. I need to know where they’re at, where their heads are.

“Last year, we had Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic with a year left. It would have been easy for me to let them roll on for another year. But after discussions we came to a conclusion where they felt there were other opportunities they wanted to explore and they moved on. With those three guys, I’m constantly talking to them about what their ambitions are.

“I want to make sure that every step of the way we’re looking after the player’s interests – but also looking after the club’s interest too. Every decision will be made against that backdrop.”

Ange Postecoglou reveals ‘waste’ message to Celtic stars and explains why performances will get stronger now

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou paid tribute to his players for sticking to their principles on a pockmarked pitch as they plundered a quartet of exquisite goals in their 4-1 victory away to St Johnstone.

Conditions seemed to count out any effervescent football, but slick passing moves and delightful finishes were to the fore in strikes from Kyogo Furuhashi, Aaron Mooy and David Turnbull. The early opener came with an own goal from the luckless Andrew Considine, later sent off for a tug on Oh Hyeon-gyu in added time that allowed Turnbull to bury a low drive from the edge of the box.

“We knew it was going to be tough conditions today because of the pitch,” Postecoglou said. “It’s a tight pitch anyway and we know St Johnstone are always hard to break down. I thought we handled it really well in terms of doing the hard bits of the game, working hard and everything. The quality of our football was outstanding. It would have been very easy to come here today and think it was going to be a bit of a grind, and think you just want to get the three points and get up the road. But I said to the lads beforehand, don’t waste any game of football. There is a goal to be found out there all the time if you are prepared to stick to your principles. It’s pleasing the players look for that. They’re not just going out there and saying ‘lets get the three points and get on with it’. They wanted to put on a strong performance and they did.”

Postecoglou maintains that the season is entering the stage where his team’s performances will become ever stronger owing to the absence of midweek games until the host Hearts on Wednesday, March 8. “For about four or five weeks now we have a game a week so that gives us the chance to work really hard at training and get everyone up another level, another notch, and increase our performance,” said the Celtic manager. “Both on an individual and collective basis. We have set our mark as always trying to finish stronger than we started and we are well on the way to that. We are definitely getting stronger every week and that’s what we want to do till the end of the year. When you do have three games a week it limits the opportunities to work on our game style, our game patterns and individual work with the guys. The guys want that. We can’t, as coaches, look to the games for improvement, we have to make sure we are giving them what they need on a daily basis and I’m sure we will use this period wisely.”

St Johnstone counterpart Callum Davidson drew succour from his team’s refusal to buckle at 2-0 down after 22 minutes, hitting back through Drey Wright shortly afterwards. He also appeared to have a minor quibble over Andre Considine being adjudged last man for his dismissal. “I have’t really seen the red card back,” said Davidson. “He’s pulled his jersey but I don’t know who’s coming covering. I was a wee bit disappointed in that. As a player you don’t think like that but as a manager you think of bigger pictures. I think [it might be possible to appeal it] ‘ but I’d need to look at it. I haven’t looked at it properly. It did look like he did pull his jersey but there’s players round about him. I still take a lot of positives. Against a very good team I thought we did well. When we tried to press them high, they could open you up but I thought we got the balance okay especially in the second half.”

Celtic, rabbits out of hats and magic circle – Saints sliced and diced despite being competitive

A proper game of football threatened to break out at various stages in Perth, but Celtic put the kibosh on that prospect through their peerless ability to conjure up killer goals.

Aspects of Ange Postecoglou’s side performance were middling on a midden of a surface – microwaved butter wouldn’t have cut up so easily – but it would be remiss to overlook St Johnstone’s willingness to engage the Scottish champions in advanced areas for at least the 4-1 win being removed from Celtic’s long list of practical walkovers in this campaign. What was St Johnstone undoing, as is the way of it for Scottish teams pitted against Postecoglou’s team, is that their quicksilver shuttling of the ball in and around the box possesses the fluidity of mercury under a bunsen burner.

What ensued from the disparate elements at McDairmid Park was not always an engaging encounter, but certainly, at times, a surprising one. The story may ultimately have ended the same as is almost always the case when Celtic take to the pitch these days – their latest success a 20th victory from a 21-game unbeaten domestic run, with a mighty 27 wins from 29 such assignments. But there were a couple of unexpected chapters ahead of the conclusion that restored the nine-point advantage in the cinch Premiership for Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Gloriously sliced and diced for two goals inside the opening 22 minutes, St Johnstone seemed certain then to be truly desiccated. Almost instantly, a squiggler of a drive from Drey Wright from 22 yards that wobbled its way under the outstretched arm of the fully extended Joe Hart put the home side back in contention. But Celtic shred opposition defences as if their players’ passing, movement and delicate touches make them akin to human cheese graters.

Celtic scored four goals in Perth as Ange Postecoglou’s men chalked up another win over St Johnstone.

Andrew Considine was certainly the home player left in bits by such capabilities. His 600th senior appearance in football was one of his most excruciating, starting with an own goal and ending with a red card. For the first agonising intervention after 13 minutes, the home backline were reduced to spinning tops as Daizen Maeda fed Mooy, whose reverse ball set off Kyogo Furuhashi down the right wing. When he slid over a cross, Considine, at the front post, slid out a leg as Reo Hatate hared in behind him, only to see the ball fly past his helpless keeper.

There was no life left in the confrontation when substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu rolled Considine in the second minute of added time. But the St Johnstone centre-back changed that needlessly by yanking by the South Korean to be sent off by referee David Dickinson and concede a free-kick that Matt O’Riley rolled to David Turnbull belted into the corner with murderous intent.

In between, Mooy was the man in Celtic’s glorious goalscoring. He delightfully flipped the ball over for Jota, on the right-hand edge of the box, to thread inside – via a deflection from sneaking through Considine’s legs – to Kyogo Furuhashi. The Japanese striker, then nimbly and ruthlessly, set himself up to slam high into net for his 23rd goal of the season. The piste de resistance for the Australian was the 38th minute strike that restored Celtic’s two goal advantage. Making a run through from deep, he was picked out by a chip from Jota and, boy, did he make full capital from doing so. Bringing the ball down as if it were velcroed to his foot, the 32-year-old’s next trick was lobbing the advancing Ross Laidlaw with consummate ease. Celtic, even when not at their absolute best, are so capable of producing such rabbits out of hats they could gain entry to the Magic Circle.

Celtic “won’t put a ceiling on what they can achieve” after restoring their nine-point Scottish Premiership lead with a routine win at St Johnstone.

Rangers had cut the gap with their win on Saturday but Celtic pulled away again thanks to Andrew Considine’s own goal and a Kyogo Furuhashi effort putting them two up inside 22 minutes.

Drey Wright’s fine strike brought St Johnstone back into it but Aaron Mooy’s chip re-established Celtic’s two-goal lead and David Turnbull added a late fourth after Considine was sent off.

It edges Ange Postecoglou’s side another step closer to retaining their title, with 13 games remaining, but the Celtic manager insists they will take it “a day at a time”.

“What’s worked really well is we don’t look too far ahead,” he said. “We’ve got a really strong squad. We’ll look to the cup next week and take every challenge as it comes. We are not going to be putting a ceiling on what can be achieved.”

St Johnstone remain seven points clear of the bottom two and played well in Perth, but that only serves to highlight some of the quality Celtic produced on a difficult surface to deliver another Premiership win.

Yet it was Callum Davidson’s side that opened up the brighter with good organisation and intent. They had one or two opportunities to test Celtic’s backline, failed to and were ruthlessly punished.

Kyogo has been prolific in delivering goals, many of them being the finishing touch. However, it was his ingenuity in a deep position to spray the ball wide to Daizen Maeda that paved the route to Celtic’s opener.

Maeda interacted with Mooy, whose pass in behind was exquisite. That ushered Kyogo in on goal and the outcome was inevitable, albeit Considine got the decisive touch.

The home side had to hang in. Unfortunately, Alex Mitchell hung back as his colleagues advanced and that allowed Jota in behind. His cross found Kyogo and, guess what, he finished emphatically for his 22nd goal of the season. Prolific.

The expected canter to victory was soon interrupted, though. Celtic appeared to switch off for a second, affording Wright space, and he took full advantage by drilling a fierce shot from outside the box, which deceived Joe Hart.

Food for thought, but not for long. Celtic’s third, before the break, was sensational.

Kyogo dropped deep again, released Jota into a dangerous area and Mooy reminded everyone of the fine form he is in with a delicate, composed lob over Remi Matthews. Those in blue could only look on in admiration at the Australian’s sixth goal in eight games.

To their credit, St Johnstone kept at it and consistently showed moments of promise. But Celtic looked comfortable and capable of finding another gear should it be required.

Considine’s afternoon took another bad turn in injury time when he upended substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu on the edge of the box and Turnbull drilled home as Celtic took one more step towards another trophy.

Pitch no problem as Celtic canter on – analysis

No matter the obstacle, Postecoglou has this Celtic side finding solutions. Some of their football on a difficult pitch was outstanding.

They faced an opponent who got a lot of things right but the outcome was never really in doubt.

Postecoglou talks about seeking constant improvement and sometimes one wonders where exactly that’s required. Yet it’s exactly what they seem to do as the season unfolds.

Mooy has proved to be an excellent acquisition despite many initially doubting where he would fit in. Right at the heart of things is the answer.

With so many performing at such a high level and Kyogo producing where it matters, Celtic really do look unstoppable on this form.

St Johnstone can take heart from the performance and look forward to a crucial period in which they will face a more favourable fixture list on paper.
What the managers said

St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson: “It’s not often you play against Celtic, have four shots on target and they score four goals. A couple of the goals we lost were poor but we did a lot of good things.

“The 4-1 score flatters them a little bit. I was quite pleased with parts of our game. We tried to squeeze them. If they peppered us on our 18-yard line they’d have scored quite a lot so we tried to keep them out of our box.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “The pitch was one of the obstacles. As the game wore on, it just got more and more hard for the lads to get a foothold. We controlled the game really well early on.

“We scored a couple of good goals, some great movement. Disappointed we conceded but again great reaction from the lads to go up the other end and get a third.”
