  • Reports: Brighton are close to agreeing a deal to sign 16-year-old central defender Ronan Ferns from Celtic.

Summary

“Celtic’s 100% home record in the League this season has come to an end! Motherwell stopped Celtic in their tracks through a superb Kevin van Veen solo effort”

Celtic 1 Motherwell 1 Not our normal scintillating performance but we move 13 points clear at the Top of the League

Disappointing result, but well played Motherwell.

Poor yesterday and tactics wrong again

Kyogo can not play on right and should not be dropping deep – his link up play is either not good or way ahead in terms of thought than rest of team – i suspect the former

Mooy so poor when he came on again

There’s a real drop in quality between our top guys and the back up and it would be really unfair to put likes of vata in against them

Really hoping jota hatate (and abada or is he not playing cause he’s not staying?) are back for next week v Sevco in the cup. Our second string may not beat them.

Liam Kelly @cfcliamk96 · Maeda missed a sitter, Kyogo missed one, Maeda should have squared to Kyogo for an open goal, CCV and Oh missed headers from 5 yards. Poor finishing, poor deliveries & poor defending on their goal Just need a good performance next week and that should see the treble over the line

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · FT: Celtic 1-1 Motherwell The Champions 100% home record ended in a wimper, Motherwell were well organised and structured and van Veen was a threat on the break but Celtic were toothless all afternoon, they never really looked like winning this after the Steelmen equalised.

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It’s a disappointing outcome. We need to lick our wounds, review it and move on. There are going to be times when you stumble, the important thing is to get back up and go again.”

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell: “To be the only team to pick up a point at Celtic Park this season is huge testament to our effort. It tells me what I already knew, that we have some excellent players in the group. It’s having that togetherness and unity in what we do. That’s the bit that pleases me most.”

Motherwell’s Kevin Van Veen @kevinvanveen · What a amazing feeling to score my 24th goal of the season away against Celtic. The whole team deserves a lot of credit for today’s performance!!! @MotherwellFC

Callum McGregor: Obviously we got the goal and then probably the most disappointing thing was that we didn’t kill the game with a second one, and we had chances throughout the first-half and second-half.”

@AgentScotland · Apr 22 Yet to see Haksabanovic have a good game that he’s started yet, talented boy no doubt but isn’t a natural fit into this Celtic team yet.

So this is how you stop Celtic: concerns creep in with Jota and Reo Hatate situation, mighty Motherwell

So Celtic are human after all. The unstoppable Ange Postecoglou winning machine broke down for the first time at Celtic Park this season as the hosts were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Motherwell.

A run of 38 consecutive home wins in the domestic domain was brought to a halt by a wily old striker from Holland. Kevin van Veen’s 24th goal of a prolific season earned a point that few outside of Fir Park would have expected in this cinch Premiership clash. But over the piece, it was one the men in claret and amber very much deserved.

The Steelmen lived up to their name as they became the first side to stop Celtic in their own backyard since Rangers on May 1 last year, and the first outside the Old Firm since Livingston claimed a goalless draw at Parkhead back on October 30, 2021. Such a rare event that it will be worth checking the skies above Glasgow for a blue moon on Saturday night. The result will barely register on the the blue side of Glasgow though given that the best Rangers can do is reduce the gap at the top of the table to 10 points with a win in Aberdeen on Sunday. The title remains a foregone conclusion.

Motherwell deserve huge credit for achieving what has seemed like an impossible task for visiting sides, but this was a Celtic performance that bore little resemblance to the one that obliterated Kilmarnock in a four-goal first half the previous week. Indeed, it was more a continuation of the laboured second half at Rugby Park as the champions elect struggled to reach the levels that have been synonymous with their success under Postecoglou. But to suggest the result was all down to home failings would be doing a major disservice to a Motherwell side that, to a man, stood up to the challenge and came up with all the answers.

So how did they manage it? It certainly helps having a manager who masterminded a victory on his previous Celtic Park in Stuart Kettlewell; albeit his 2-0 win as Ross County boss came during the final throes of Neil Lennon’s tenure in 2020.

“That’s been no bad over the last couple of games!” the delighted Well boss said afterwards. “I can tell you that it’s anything but easy and I think we all know that. I’m just delighted for the players and how they bought into everything that we asked them to do today.

“It’s a different test when you come to a place like this and play against that level of opposition. Nobody has been able to come and take anything off them here. I don’t want to be celebrating points, but the nature of the game, and the gulf in finance, stature of club, all that stuff, I think it just speaks volumes for my players. I thought they were outstanding to a man.

“I’ve just said to the players the biggest thing for me is not having an ego and it’s something I believe in so much. For us to go and set ourselves up and play the way we did, if one player has an ego then the whole thing falls down and Celtic comfortably win that game. That’s the bit that pleased me, that’s when you know you’ve got buy in.”

Motherwell showed their intent inside the first minute. Greg Taylor was slack in possession and Van Veen pounced to force Joe Hart into using a toe to divert a low drive away from goal. The early warning jolted Celtic but they soon established their dominance with McGregor pulling the strings. He curled narrowly over from 20 yards then found Daizen Maeda with a glorious clipped pass but Liam Kelly was equal to the Japanese forward’s header.

The opener arrived via the Celtic captain on 23 minutes. Motherwell were defending everything that came into their box resolutely but they left McGregor free 25 yards from goal and his strike took a fortunate nick off defender Calum Butcher before bouncing past Liam Kelly.

Celtic led but their performance had been low-key and as time half-time approached it was becoming clear that Motherwell were in no mood to cave in. The threat of Kyogo Furuhashi had been effectively neutered as the visitors starved the Japanese striker of space and possession.

The Well rearguard were proving particularly adept at blocking the low balls across the face of goal that the league’s top scorer thrives on. Whenever such a delivery was made from right or left into the visitors box, a defender met it first. Second balls were then pounced on and cleared.

If there is a blueprint for taking anything from Celtic Park then Motherwell were doing their best to deliver it. What they needed was a goal to get themselves back into the game, and with a striker of the calibre of Van Veen up front, they always had a chance. So it proved as the Celtic centre-halves were caught up the park and a ball forward left the Dutchman in a one-on-one with Taylor. From the second Van Veen took control of the ball the Celtic left-back looked in trouble, and so it proved as Taylor was turned inside-out before the ‘Well striker finished expertly past Hart to spark delirium among the small band of travelling fans.

The normal script would be for Celtic to shrug off the setback and find a way to win. They always do. Only, on this occasion, they never had it in them, even with seven minutes added time, with the creative forces of Jota and Reo Hatate noticeable by their absence – a concern for the Hoops with the influential duo doubtful for next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers.

Substitutes were introduced, interestingly youngster Rocco Vata ahead of David Turnbull, and the closest Celtic came was when Oh Hyeon-gyu glanced a header wide from his fellow replacement’s cross. This was Motherwell’s day.

Ange Postecoglou admits Celtic now face Rangers ‘challenge’ after dropping standards

Kevin Van Veen’s second-half strike cancelled Callum McGregor’s deflected first-half opener as Celtic dropped points at home for the first time this season. Postecoglou admitted that his team will need to pick over the bones of a below par performance ahead of facing Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden next weekend.

“Obviously it’s a disappointing outcome and the performance was not really at the levels we’ve shown before,” he said. “When you set the standards we set you’ve just got to make sure you’re doing everything within your control to maintain and reach those standards. We conceded a really poor goal which is unlike us, and that seemed to filter through into our play after that. We were trying to chase the game a little bit which we’ve been pretty good at not doing. But it’s only natural that the guys are going to try and make amends and score a goal but I thought we lacked the composure to do that.”

The result brought an end to a 38-game winning sequence at Celtic Park in domestic matches. “That’s the standards we set,” Postecoglou added. “We’d rather have high standards and fall short than accept something less. The lads are disappointed because they want to be better and today we didn’t reach the levels we want to.”

Asked if the display had given him extra food for thought ahead of facing Rangers, Postecoglou replied: “Every game is an opportunity for us to improve. We do what we normally do and review the game. We just have to lick our wounds and get on with it. That’s the game of football. You can’t just expect everything to run smoothly. It’s a little bit of a challenge for us now to get over this disappointment and focus on a big game next week.”

Celtic were without key figures Reo Hatate and Jota and Postecoglou admitted they are not certain to return in time for the Hampden showdown. “We’ll see with the boys that didn’t play today,” he added. “They are all pretty close but they need to train all week to be involved. We’ll see how they all are. ”

Motherwell’s antics a good example of what’s hindering Scottish football

Motherwell’s antics a good example of what’s hindering Scottish football

By justanordinarybhoy 23 April, 2023 1 Comment

Let’s get one thing straight, the pathetic actions of the Motherwell players yesterday had no major impact on the result of the game. Celtic were under par and didn’t do enough to warrant a victory.

So this is not an excuse for Celtic dropping two points yesterday, instead it is just my opinion on the state of Scottish football. It wasn’t just the diabolical time wasting but the actual kick and rush tactics that the steelmen deployed, one that we’ve witnessed from many a side on a regular basis this season.

There’s always a debate on how Scottish football is of a poor standard and how can we improve blah blah blah, it’s repetitive and played out like a broken record.

The answer is literally staring them in the face. Yesterday’s display by Motherwell is a prime example. Time waste, and when they do have the ball, kick it up the park and regroup, eat sleep repeat. Long throw-ins and set pieces into the box hoping for the best. No real skill or technical ability. That’s your problem right there.

Every side who visit Celtic park domestically are the same, set up and hit on the break or hope for the best from set pieces or throw-ins. Even our closest challengers theRangers deployed similar tactics on their visit a fortnight ago.

Motherwell scored a fine goal on the break through Kevin Van Veen, why didn’t they try to replicate that again instead of sitting back booting the ball up the park hoping for a draw?

They even had a corner late on but took their time, Daizen Maeda embarrassingly had to place the ball on the corner spot urging them to take it. It was 1-1 for heaven’s sake, a chance for them to win the game.

Obviously teams have to set up a game plan that suits them and that’s their prerogative, but at least try to play the game the right way? Retain possession by keeping the ball? Work on the technical side of the game? It’s not all about finances, that excuse doesn’t wash anymore.

Look at smaller countries than Scotland with the same budgets ie Croatia, Norway, Denmark and Slovakia. They all produce good technical footballers. Their club and national sides compete by playing productive football while developing world class players. It’s more than achievable. No excuses.

It’s down to one thing and one thing only, coaching and development of players. Proper education. Play football the right way, it develops better footballers and makes it a better spectacle for the paying customer, while improving the quality of players, and naturally the domestic game and international side reap the benefits.

You don’t need to be an expert to diagnose the illness in Scottish football. it’s glaringly obvious what is wrong, but more importantly it can be easily cured. It’s time those in charge took the appropriate steps and take responsibility to get the football in this country up to the levels required. If not it won’t get any better.

Kevin van Veen goal v Celtic
Kevin van Veen’s 24th goal of the season earned Motherwell a draw at Celtic Park

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou says his side “lacked composure” in a “disappointing” draw with Motherwell as they suffered a minor bump in their pursuit of back-to-back Scottish Premiership titles.

The runaway league leaders went into the game off the back of 12 straight league wins and were on track to extend that run to 13 when Callum McGregor’s deflected first-half effort opened the scoring.

But Postecoglou’s men were never at their free-flowing best and Kevin van Veen’s 24th goal of the season levelled the game after the break, meaning the Fir Park club become the first team to take a point away from Celtic Park this season.

“The performance probably wasn’t at the level we have been reaching,” the Celtic boss told BBC Sportsound. “First half was okay, we controlled the game really well and got our goal, had opportunities to get another.

“Then we conceded a really poor goal and that gives them something to hold on to. We had chances to go on and win it but there was desperation around our play. We lacked that composure in the box.”

The result stretches Celtic’s lead at the top to 13 points, but victory for Rangers at Aberdeen on Sunday will cut that gap to 10 with five games to play.

That means Postecoglou’s side need just two wins from their post-split fixtures to clinch successive Premiership titles.

Everything Motherwell – go straight to all the best content

Motherwell, meanwhile, continue their impressive form under Stuart Kettlewell and they remain eighth.

Kettlewell’s men travelled to Glasgow’s east end with a 15-game losing streak against their hosts hanging over them, but Saturday’s result ended that wretched run.

Again, they had Van Veen to thank after the Dutchman carried the ball from just beyond halfway before finishing superbly past Joe Hart into the far corner.

Had the striker managed to beat Hart from a similar angle in the first half, the visitors would have taken the lead within the first minute.

Aside from that, Motherwell’s impressive work came in their defending. Celtic needed a deflected effort from McGregor to beat Liam Kelly, who pulled off a number of smart stops throughout the 90 minutes.

The first of those came from a diving Daizen Maeda header in the first half with the game goalless. After the break, the visitors’ captain was sharp off his line to get a strong hand to Kyogo Furuhashi’s dinked finish with the score at 1-1.

As expected, Celtic ramped up the pressure as the game progressed, but Hyeon-gyu Oh and Carl Starfelt both failed to direct close-range headers on target late on.

It all added up to a frustrating day for Postecoglou, but a second title in his second season in Scotland still very much looks inevitable with just six points from a possible 15 required.
Player of the match – Kevin van Veen
Kevin van Veen
Where would Motherwell be without the Dutchman? They would be 24 goals worse off for a start. Yet again the striker was the difference maker for his side.
Postecoglou won’t allow complacency – analysis

It is hard to be too critical of a team who have now racked up a remarkable 92 points from a possible 99 on offer this term.

Bumps in the road are inevitable, but Postecoglou will be keen to ensure complacency doesn’t creep into his players’ mindset, especially with an Old Firm Scottish Cup semi-final to come next Sunday.

A repeat of Saturday’s performance at Hampden could end Celtic’s hopes of a treble, but Postecoglou’s men are still well on course for the title and may well smash club records in the process.

Five wins from their final five league games would beat the club’s record points haul of 106, while they are also on course to score 119 league goals, which would beat the current record of 116.

Until Saturday, Celtic hadn’t dropped points at home since a draw against Rangers in May last year. To become the first team to take anything away from the east end of Glasgow in almost 12 months is a mightily impressive feat.

The Fir Park club have lost just twice from nine games under the stewardship of Kettlewell and now look good to secure their top-flight status after the split.

There is still work to do, but with a six-point advantage and a superior goal difference than 10th-placed Dundee United and 11th-placed Kilmarnock, you have to imagine one win will be more than enough.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It’s a disappointing outcome. We need to lick our wounds, review it and move on.

“There are going to be times when you stumble, the important thing is to get back up and go again.”

Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell: “To be the only team to pick up a point at Celtic Park this season is huge testament to our effort.

“It tells me what I already knew, that we have some excellent players in the group. It’s having that togetherness and unity in what we do. That’s the bit that pleases me most.”
What’s next?

Celtic are at Hampden next Sunday (13:30 BST) as they look to book a Scottish Cup final place by beating Rangers.

Motherwell will return to action the following weekend in their opening post-split fixture, with their first bottom-six opponent expected to be confirmed early next week.
