Mitchel Frame was reputedly another young player in demand, with big guns like Man City, Spurs, Brighton & Newcastle all having reportedly made efforts to sign the teenager in the year before he extended his deal at Celtic. After losing Ben Doak, losing another notable prospect would have been disastrous.

He made probably one of the most unexpected debuts in recent Celtic history, when he was called off the Celtic bench for the dead rubber match v Feynenoord (Dec 2023) in the Champions League (in the squad for home grown player quota reasons).  He got subbed on due to injuries mounting upon an already injury decimated first team. Aged just 17,he was to play out of position as a left-winger. He probably was more shocked than anyone else to play, but he was desperately needed.

Celtic won at the death in his debut match, and Mitchel Frame was praised for his part in the 2-1 win, being fearless and positive, calm on the ball and wanting to go forward. Put in a good tackle too, so a very decent debut despite having been thrown in at the deep end. As the MSM nauseatingly noted, the last time Celtic had won a Champions League group match before this one, Mitchel Frame was just seven, so he helped to stop a rot.

Yet despite that great introduction to the Celtic first team, that was to be it frustratingly. A recurring issue was that Brendan Rodgers continued his underwhelming record in rearing youth talent into the first team. Celtic actually needed cover for the left-back role with Greg Taylor having left, and the returning Tierney not fully up to full 90min fitness levels.  Adding in the impending arrival of Marcelo Saracchi on loan, first-team opportunities were going to continue to be a challenge.

Mitchel Frame opted to move to Aberdeen in August 2025 for est £250k to an Aberdeen side who were rebooting after a poor start to the new season, trying to resurrect the incredible form they had gone through 12 months beforehand when they were matching Celtic head-to-head for a period.

The irony for him is that Celtic had won a number of trophies during his time at the club, and he ended up missing out on playing even a small part. He got to play in a little bit of history in the Champions League with Celtic, nothing domestically. He deserved better.

The day before it was announced he was moving on, that Celtic had slumped in the European Cup playoffs, with complaints about transfers & youth talent management. His departure & failure to progress at Celtic was another demonstrations of the underlying problems at the club which had come to the fore.

The youth system at Celtic seemed to develop talent but not them to progress into the Celtic first team, with many bailing out at the first opportunity. In fairness, Mitchel Frame stuck by at Celtic but it wasn’t to be.

We wished him the best.

Mitchell Frame is a name which will be recognised by much of the Celtic support by now. Although yet to make his first team debut for the club, Frame signed a new three-year deal with the club in September, after reported interest from Premier League sides Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 17-year-old who starred for Scotland’s u17s at the European Championships in the summer, made the Celtic match-day squad for the first time this season in the 2-0 defeat in Rome over two weeks ago. He has featured 12 times for the B team this season, scoring one goal while also starting and playing every minute of his four appearances in the UEFA Youth League.

Frame is also a key part of a talented Scotland u19 squad who recently qualified for the Elite Round of Euros qualifying, playing every minute in qualifying games against Bulgaria, Andorra and Serbia.

Celtic’s left back options are bleak to say the least currently, with Greg Taylor enduring a poor run of form while Alessandro Bernabei has been largely outcasted by Rodgers this season, with the Argentinian not even registered in the Champions League squad and looks set for a January exit.

Frame is not involved with the u18 side today as they face Feyenoord in the UEFA Youth League, (Celtic are currently winning 2-1) and Rodgers could very well give the highly rated teenager a chance tonight.

Given his obvious talent and his commitment to the club for the next three seasons, why shouldn’t the teenager be given a chance in the first team? Celtic have strayed from their commitments in bringing players through from the academy over the past number of years, and such incompetence has resulted in the club now struggling to hold onto their prized young talents.

The last academy prospect to break into Celtic’s first team as a consistent starter was Kieran Tierney, who made his first team debut at 17.

Frame, also a 17-year-old left back, should be given the same opportunity which was handed to Tierney all those years ago, as he replaced a steadily declining Emilio Izaguirre in the starting eleven. A debut for the highly rated teenager should be a foregone conclusion tonight, but a start for the 17-year-old under the lights at Celtic Park would be all the more special.

The young full-back made the step up to the B Team at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign.

After spending the opening stages of pre-season with Brendan Rodgers’ first-team out in Portgual, Frame signed a new three year deal with the Hoops.

The defender has also represented his country at youth level, and most recently earned caps for the Scotland under-19s side.

During the 2022/23 campaign, he was also one of several players that helped the under-18s side win the Scottish Youth Cup, scoring the Hoops’ opening goal in the 6-5 victory over Rangers.

Mitchel made his first-team debut during the 2-1 UEFA Champions League win over Feyenoord at Celtic Park (13 Dec, 2023).

The Youth Academy graduate replaced Luis Palma in the 75th minute and made an immediate impact, playing a key role in the winning goal, forcing the corner which eventually lead to Gustaf Lagerbielke heading home.

The 2023/24 campaign has been an impressive breakout year for the young defender, who also went to score during an impressive 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League International Cup.

Joe Harper: Celtic left-back Mitchel Frame can be a shrewd addition for Aberdeen

Dons duo could be the difference makers as Jimmy Thelin’s side chase a place in the league phase of the Europa League.

Joe Harper: Celtic left-back Mitchel Frame can be a shrewd addition for Aberdeen

Aberdeen could have a gem on their hands in Mitchel Frame.

The Scotland youth international is set to join Aberdeen on a four-year deal after the club agreed a six-figure fee with Celtic – and he’s exactly the type of player the Dons should be targeting.

Frame is hungry to play and Aberdeen have a problem area needing filled. Add in the need for Scottish players in the squad for Europe and it’s a no-brainer.

The Dons need someone who can get up and down wing and Frame has the opportunity to show he can be that man.

The left-back position has been a problem area for the Dons since the season started.

Summer signing Emmanuel Gyamfi is in light training after missing the entire pre-season campaign due to injury.

Dons captain Graeme Shinnie has been utilised in that role while Nicky Devlin and Gavin Molloy have also deputised as left-back so far this season.

Shinnie is the only one I’d regard as a recognised left-back out of the trio I’ve mentioned but I’d still have him in the middle of the park rather than in defence.

The skipper is a player who leads by example and inspires those around him and I believe the team needs his tenacity and drive from the Dons engine room rather pushing forward from a defensive position.

Devlin did a terrific job in the Scottish Cup final, but he is more comfortable on the right while Molloy is largely untested as a left-back.

Central defence is his preferred position, and he looks a lot more comfortable there than he did up against FCSB in the Europa League play-off first leg at Pittodrie last week.
Frame will be eager to impress at Pittodrie

The arrival of 19-year-old Frame will solve that particular issue and provide competition for Gyamfi in the process.

But Jimmy Thelin will also be bringing on board a player who will feel he has a point to prove.

Frame attracted interest from a host of clubs in England a couple of years ago but opted to sign a three-year deal to stay with the Hoops.

The teenager was tipped for big things when he came off the bench to make his first team debut for the Hoops in the Champions League against Feyenoord two years ago, winning the corner which led to the winner at Celtic Park.

But since then his competitive games have been restricted to the Challenge Cup and the Lowland League with Celtic’s B team.

The writing was on the wall for Frame at Celtic Park following the return of Kieran Tierney in the summer.

With Uruguayan left back Marcelo Saracchi also heading for Glasgow it was only going to push the teenager further down the pecking order so I’m not surprised he is looking for a fresh challenge.

The Dons clearly see something in him if they have offered him a four-year deal while Celtic’s reported insistence on a sell-on clause being inserted in the deal suggests they think he has potential too.

Frame is at an age where he need to be playing regular football and I’m confident he will get that chance with Aberdeen.

It’s up to the youngster to take it.
