The Polar Bear Trophy was presented to Celtic F.C by Valur of Iceland to mark the meeting of the two clubs in the opening round of the 1975/76 Cup Winners Cup.
The trophy carved from stone is a model of a polar bear eating a seal.
The teams met in Reykjavík on 16 September 1975. Goals from Wilson and MacDonald gave Celtic a two goal lead to take back to Celtic Park. They progressed to the next round with a 7-0 victory in Glasgow two weeks later win giving them an aggregate score of 9-0. The goals were scored by Edvaldsson, Dalglish, P. McCluskey, Deans, Callaghan and a double from Harry Hood. The brother of Celtic’s ‘Shuggie’ Edvaldsson who scored in the second leg and missed a twice taken penalty in Reykjavik was also playing but in the colours of Valur.
The Bhoys‘ Polar Bear Trophy triumph came in the 1975 Cup Winners’ Cup first-round win over Iceland’s FC Valur, who marked their 9-0 aggregate defeat by giving Celtic a stone-carved trophy in the shape of a polar bear devouring a seal.
