  • Competitive debuts for Aaron Mooy.
  • Yosuke Ideguchi has suffered another injury setback and will miss start of the season.
  • Celtic chairman and director Ian Bankier will retire from his roles on January 1, 2023. Reports: Peter Lawwell ‘set for Celtic return’ as club’s new chairman.

  • League Cup: Celtic to play Ross County away in round two.
  • Alexandro Bernabei clear from suspension and free to play, will not serve a two match ban as initially feared running from a suspension from his last match at his old club, but didn’t play!
  • Commonwealth Games in Birmingham started.
  • Politics: David Trimble: Former Northern Ireland first minister and UUP leader has passed away. RIP
  • A Tory MSP said tube strikes had been deliberately timed to cause ‘maximise the disruption to (Sevco) fans’. Pandering… But we all still laughed at him.
  • Cricket: The board of Cricket Scotland  resigned with immediate effect, ahead of a review that found Scottish cricket to be institutionally racist (448 cases!). Yet all schtum on Sevco.
  • SPFL Reserve League will return this season. Clubs taking part are: Ayr United, Dundee, Dundee United, Hamilton, Hibs, Kilmarnock, Livingston, Motherwell, Queen of the South and Queen’s Park. Celtic Hearts and Sevco already started in lowland leagues with B sides so not involved with renewed reserve league.
  • Economics: The US economy fell into a technical recession in the second quarter. Rest of the world little better.

Reports:

  • Toulouse want to sign Stephen Welsh, but Ange reportedly won’t sell. Loan bid turned down. Reputedly one year loan with 3.5m set transfer fee with addons.
  • Mikey Johnston linked with move to Ronny Delia’s Standard Liege but interest from others too.
  • Despite social media rumours that Celtic are pursuing a deal for Man City midfielder Claudio Gomes it’s believed this isn’t the case.
  • Celtic scouts watch Mohammad Abu Fani to make ‘final decision’. Cue plenty of puns. Link was later said to be not true.

Transfers:

  • Justin Osagie: Celtic look to seal the signing of West Ham defender Justin Osagie. The 17 year old centre-back is described as quick, comfortable on the ball & with an eye for a pass has also been deployed in central-midfield.
  • Osaze Urhoghide has returned to KV Oostende on loan for the rest of the season.

Summary

“I thought we were wasteful in front of goal.”

“I thought our football was decent for the most part.”

Ange Postecoglou

“Everyone starts at zero points, it’s now about what you do next and bettering your own game and collectively getting stronger.”

Callum McGregor

“We’ve got to be stronger than last year, we’ve got to improve…”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou

“It depends on how closely they’ve been paying attention…. my experience is they don’t usually”

Celtic boss Ange Posetcoglou says he’s not too concerned about other managers figuring out his style after a year in Scotland.

Joebloggscity: Jota scored a wonder goal, possibly already the goal of the season! Welsh scores a fine header from a corner. Some over-eager challenges on Reo Hatate! Totally unnecessary. Beyond that Aberdeen were a fine side.

“This is the first step. It’s a long marathon.”

Jota

Fatboab of KDS:

Very comfortable opening day win that should have been a lot more comfortable but for lots over overplaying in the final third. Jota’s strike was as magnificent as it was necessary as they clearly felt they might manoeuvre something by bringing on two forwards late on.

It’ll take a good team to beat us in this league , and we will run up a few cricket scores in the process, but Aberdeen were tidy and surprisingly physical, which will serve them well.

Hatate , CCV and Juranovic were my star men, but clearly Jota gets the sponsors award for his hair and goal.

Not convinced about the position Joe Hart takes up thirty metres from his goal. Someone will catch us out this season.

Good crowd , great Tifo and decent result.

Ref was a cheat and Scotrail want their baws toed, and Sky can […] off with that kick off time, but that aside, nice Sunday at the footy.

Twitter:

@agentscotland: FT: Celtic 2-0 Aberdeen As comprehensive a victory as you’ll see, one criticism they had last season was they weren’t as clinical even after 137 goals, same could be said today but the control they had since the opening minute will please them most, encourging start to 2022-23.

Aberdeen defended resolutely and looked comfortable in that defensive role at times, they had their best spell in the last 10 mins of the first half and Hayes blew a great opportunity, that was as good as it got for the Dons though, their new team won’t be judged on Celtic away.

Just saw the tifo on TV there, it looked incredible inside the stadium but seeing it on the TV makes you appreciate how incredible it really was, one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Ó Dubhghaill @steviedbhoy1888 · 23h The @KanoFoundation kids booing the Aberdeen keepers then singing abredeen cany kick a jelly bean brilliant

@Etims: A fair reflection was prob 4-1 as Dons missed a sitter to add to ours. Sharpness comes with games. Lots of positives. Passing, movement and pressing. Strong bench on show to keep level of play high. Chalk & cheese to 12 months ago.

Goals: Welsh and Jota.Assists: O’Riley and TurnbullPOTM: Many did well but I’m going to give it to young Welsh. Vital early opening goal. Solid at the back. Good passing on display. Aye, Stephen Welsh POTM.Jota got MotM in the stadium today & his goal probably merited it but I felt Stephen Welsh and Greg Taylor were practically flawless today, what Taylor lacks in ability he makes up for in knowing exactly what Ange wants while Walsh won every header and carried the ball so well.

@bobby_peru: Job done. Final ball not quite there and also overplayed it a bit at times. wait for the 2nd goal made it a bit more stressful than it should have been. Think Aberdeen will do ok this season.

@bhoysanalytics: Finishing and decision making will come. Dominated and only gave up one chance which was good. Welsh our best player.

Stewart will be competing for best of the rest was fantastic today

Would like a Rogic and Bitton replacement brought in as well as another forward

Celtic’s masterful £1.5m steal shines against Aberdeen as fans send out ‘not be moved’ message with top place

The chant arrived in the 79th minute. Jota had spun away from the attention of Dante Polvara, minutes earlier, on the edge of the Aberdeen box and arced a shot away from Kelle Roos into the top corner.

Celtic led 2-0 and ‘we shall not be moved’ rang around the ground.

That second goal was meaningful. It put Ange Postecoglou’s men top of the Scottish Premiership. Every other team had already got their league campaign up and running. Hearts, Hibs, Rangers and Motherwell all picking up three points but none had won by two goals.

Just ninety minutes into the season but it is “symbolic”, to use a word mentioned by Postecoglou in the build-up to the match. It is the aim, as it is every season. To be top and nowhere else. That reminder came prior to the match kicking off.

It was ‘Flag Day’ at Celtic Park. The Australian sought to play down the spectacle, noting how it was a “symbolic” event for the club. For him, last season is in the rear-view mirror. A line was drawn in pre-season and the full focus is on this campaign. A return to the Champions League group stages and the quest for the 53rd title in the club’s history.

Call and response

Celtic fans throughout the day very much had a foot in both camps. ‘Champions again’ was belted out on various occasions before and during the encounter.

The flags and the colour. The noise of the drum, the constant hum. The call and response. The tifo. There was a European feel to Celtic Park as the champions got their title defence underway against a new-look Aberdeen.

In fact, it simply had the feel of a big game. A packed, raucous crowd. A corner of away fans, heavily outnumbered but sure to make their voice heard amongst the tumult. There was a vibrancy. Well before kick-off, through the unfurling of the flag, complete with fireworks and flames and a large mosaic, and into those early proceedings. Any neutral would have feared for Jim Goodwin’s men.

Even more so when Stephen Welsh rose above Polvara to meet Matt O’Riley’s corner within three minutes to head Celtic in front.

Throughout much of the first half, there was an element of Celtic as the cat, Aberdeen the helpless mouse. The way in which the home side moved the ball from side to side and more pertinently through the lines, they were toying with the Dons, almost torturing them without providing that killer touch of a second goal.

Even when they lost it, the mentality and attitude to get after it must have been suffocating for the visitors.

Joe Hart spent much of the half patrolling an area just outside the centre circle, both sweeper and observer, as part of that suffocating quality to make the pitch as small as possible for the opposition and allow the centre-backs to step into the opposition half. There could be an opportunity for teams to take advantage of such aggressive positioning but it means winning the ball back then being able to show not only the composure to spot Hart’s positioning but the talent to execute.

The £1.5m steal

There was no more impressive talent, however, than Matt O’Riley in that first 45 minutes in conjunction with Reo Hatate. The way in which they threw on invisibility cloaks to sneak unseen behind the Aberdeen midfield to collect passes before wreaking havoc.

MK Dons must have been laughed out of their local police station when they tried to report Celtic, having realised the £1.5million transfer fee was nothing more than a steal.

His ability to get on the ball and manipulate games, his vision and movement and his end product. At times it is masterful. In the first-half alone he created four chances and could have scored one of his own if not for team-mate Kyogo Furuhashi getting in the way.

When Jota swapped with Daizen Maeda to move to the left, it became a problematic area for Aberdeen as Welsh and Taylor helped build play.

But credit to Goodwin’s Dons. This was their first proper test as a new side. They didn’t wilt. It was the opposite. Having been this timid mouse, startled, they built into the game, displayed bravery in possession and became more threatening and frustrated Celtic. Jonny Hayes really should have netted an equaliser before the half-time whistle.

The Aberdeen boss will have been annoyed at such a cheap concession for the opener, Polvara the man who had come in for the unavailable Liam Scales not getting close enough to Welsh. Overall there were encouraging signs, but also ones that show this side, with new new boys featuring, are a work in progress.

You would expect them to be a more complete unit the next time they travel to the East End of Glasgow. Equally, Celtic could be a more difficult opponent, once up to speed, this being their first competitive outing.

It showed as they suffered a lull either side of half-time and before Jota found space outside the Aberdeen box to provide that killer touch.

A big moment it certainly was. Until then, the game hung in the balance, Rangers showing how quickly it can all change as they battled to a 2-1 win at Livingston. It’s that to-and-fro which will once again play a big role in the season. The call and response. Rangers playing and winning before Celtic play and vice versa.

The same impact as a washing machine. Around and around and around again. It can leave many in a daze. Focus and concentration are key.

Even this early on it’s Celtic who have the slight edge. With Jota and O’Riley producing such masterful moments, it will take plenty for them to be moved.

Celtic 4-3-3: Hart; Juranovic (Ralston 82’), Carter-Vickers, Welsh, Taylor; McGregor, Hatate (Turnbull 65’), O’Riley (Mooy 82’); Jota, Kyogo (Giakoumakis 65’), Maeda (Abada 65’).

Aberdeen: 4-2-3-1: Roos; Richardson, Stewart, McCrorie, Coulson; Ramadani, Polvara; Kennedy (Roberts 62’), Besuijen, Hayes; Miovski (Lopes 62’).

Ange Postecoglou names ‘wasteful’ Celtic star as ‘lessons’ need learned despite stunner, Reo Hatate update

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou described Jota as one of the “main culprits” in a “wasteful” end to the first-half as the Scottish champions ran out 2-0 winners over Aberdeen to kick off their league season.

The Australian felt lessons needed to be learned regarding aspects of the team’s play on ‘Flag Day’ at Celtic Park.

Stephen Welsh gave the home side the perfect start, heading in a Matt O’Riley corner after three minutes but after dominating much of the opening 45 minutes, Postecoglou was left frustrated with the way the team wasted both possession and chances.

“I thought we started the game really well and the first half hour we were really good,” he said. “We got control of the game and were creating opportunities.

“The last 15 minutes of the first half we got slack with our passing and were not as aggressive with our press on the ball. We let the game be more open than it should have been, which was disappointing.

“I thought after the break we got control again and we finished strongly. It was a solid performance but we were just wasteful in front of goal.

“I was disappointed because I thought we could have been a lot more clinical with the chances we created. If we had taken them we could have put the game well to bed.

“It was a decent workout for us. Our movement was good and our passing was good. But, we could have had more chances if we made better decisions in the final third.

“Sometimes you can fall into the trap of knowing we will create loads of opportunities and because of that you are not as focused as you should be.

“My view is we are creating opportunities so let’s take as many as we can.”

‘Addressed at half-time’

Jota produced a moment of brilliance in the second half with a wonderful strike past Kelle Roos to make it 2-0 but Postecoglou offered up some critical analysis.

“There is no doubt the boy has talent and he is determined to be the best footballer he can be,” he said. “But, he was one of the main culprits in the last 15 minutes of the first half. He was wasteful with the ball and he gave away possession when he didn’t have to.

“These are the kind of things we have to avoid. We have to keep these guys on track and not let them get away from the things we want them to do.

“The good thing is he addressed it at half-time and in the second half, not just his goal but his general play was really good. He was dangerous, threatening and doing the team stuff as well.

“There are lessons in there for everyone. I didn’t shout or give him a going over. At the same time you need to address the issues at hand. You can’t just dismiss the last 15 minutes of the first half.

“There are lessons in there as other teams may punish you in that period.”

Postecoglou also offered an update on Reo Hatate who went off in the second half.

“He copped a couple of hard knocks to be fair and he was a bit sore after the game,” he said.

Jota’s stunning strike sealed an opening-day win for Celtic over new-look Aberdeen

Jota’s rasping strike sealed an opening-day win for Celtic over new-look Aberdeen

Jota’s stunning long-range drive capped off victory for Celtic as they began their Scottish Premiership title defence with a win over Aberdeen.

Stephen Welsh glanced in at the near post to get the reigning champions off to a perfect start before a relentless pursuit for a second goal followed.

Jim Goodwin’s new-look side dug deep, though, and posed their own threat late in the first period.

But Celtic regained control after the break as Jota’s strike sealed the win.

The victory means the Parkhead side stretch their unbeaten run over Aberdeen to 18 games and matches the opening-day result of title rivals Rangers, who started their league campaign with victory at Livingston on Saturday.

Reaction & as it happened

As the title-winning flag was hoisted, recent memories of Celtic’s 2021-22 triumph were brought to the forefront of the minds of a jubilant sellout home crowd.

Those thoughts were soon parked to one side on referee Nick Walsh’s first whistle as attention turned to retaining the title Ange Postecoglou’s side wrested from Rangers last term.

But Goodwin’s men, on the back of an impressive League Cup group stage campaign, were looking to bring down the party volume. The away side failed in achieving that, however, and got off to a nightmare start when Matt O’Riley’s corner was glanced in by Welsh.

Celtic probed continuously for a second, with Kyogo Furuhashi and O’Riley both going close, as Aberdeen conceded possession time and time again.

But after hanging on for the majority of the first period, the Aberdeen attack showed signs of promise late in the half as Jonny Hayes passed up a glorious chance to level.

The visitors couldn’t make the most of the few openings that fell their way, though, as Postecoglou’s side grabbed a stranglehold on the game again after the interval.

Following further smart stops by Aberdeen keeper Kelle Roos after efforts by Josip Juranovic, O’Riley and Liel Abada, Jota was on hand to jink past his marker and rifle in an unstoppable shot from over 20 yards, polishing off a hard-fought opening victory.

Man of the match – Jota

Jota celebrates

Denmark midfielder O’Riley was the standout in the first period, but Jota’s second-half display, coupled with his phenomenal goal, earns the winger the prize

Celtic still finding range amid bright start

Even after last season’s title triumph, Celtic have started this season in far better shape than they did 12 months ago.

In contrast to Sunday’s starting line-up, just two players – captain Callum McGregor and Greg Taylor – featured in Postecoglou’s XI at Tynecastle last July, where Celtic suffered an opening-day defeat.

No debutants featured from the off, highlighting how much the Australian values continuity in his side, while the substitutes the Celtic boss brought off his bench highlights the embarrassment of riches at his disposal.

But his demand for near-perfection will raise minor concerns about his side’s lack of control at the end of the first half and lack of clinical edge throughout the game.

That lack of ruthlessness can also be put down to the endeavour and dig of Goodwin’s side, which included eight Premiership debutants.

Many teams would have crumbled under the relentless pressure Aberdeen had to deal with after Welsh’s opener, and a better end product and finishing touch would have seen the visitors find a way back into the game.

It was an unforgiving first assignment, but Goodwin can take hope into a run of more favourable fixtures.

What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I thought we started the game really well and had good control of it. Then the last 15 minutes of the first half, we got a bit slack with our passing and allowed Aberdeen to come into the game.

“But in the second half I thought we addressed that and controlled the game, but I just thought we needed to be a bit more decisive as we were wasteful in front of goal today.”

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin: “We knew how difficult the fixture was going to be on Celtic’s flag day. Unfortunately, we couldn’t have got off to a worse start than we did. We gave away a silly corner and quite frankly didn’t defend it as well as we should have.

“The players didn’t let their heads go down and tried to play at times, albeit a little sloppy in possession, and we had a decent chance through Jonny [Hayes] and it would have been interesting had that got in.”

What’s next?
