1st 1888: Celtic win their first ever Scottish Cup tie with a 5-1 triumph at Parkhead over Shettleston.

1976: Celtic sign Pat Stanton from Hibs in exchange for Jackie McNamara (Snr) who moves to Easter Road.

2nd 1950: Charlie Tully leaves Celtic on a free transfer.
3rd 1912: Celtic 1-1 Barnsley – Game played at Celtic Park between the Scottish Cup holders and the English Cup holders, dubbed the “Champions of the World” match! Ends in a draw.

1914: Jimmy Delaney born in Cleland, Lanarkshire.

1966: Willie O’Neil replaces Jimmy Johnstone in a 1-0 League Cup win at St Mirren to become Celtic’s first official substitute in a competitive game.

4th 1922: James ‘Sunny Jim’ Young killed in a motorcyle accident aged just 40-years.

1971: Celtic defeat Clyde 9-1 in a league game at Celtic Parkhead.

5th 1931: John Thomson tragically dies after a serious head injury at a Celtic v Rangers game
6th 1890: Celtic defeat Rangers 1-0 in a Scottish Cup tie

1958: Crowd trouble as Celtic draw 2-2 with Rangers in a poorly refereed game

1941: Celtic Park shut for a month after disturbances at match v Rangers at Ibrox. Heavy handed but it was war-time.

1977: Tom McAdam is signed from Dundee United in a £60,000 deal

7th 1940: Crowd trouble disrupts a 0-0 draw between Celtic and Rangers in the Southern League. The rioting would lead to Celtic Park being closed for a month.

1997: Clydebank band Wet Wet Wet play a gig at Celtic Park.

8th 1973: Celtic beat Clyde 5-0 at Celtic Park with a hat-trick from Bobby Lennox and a goal each from Kenny Dalglish and Danny McGrain – on this day the players all wore the number 8 on their shorts to celebrate winning 8 League titles in a row.

On a much sadder and sinister note this was the game that young Brian McLaughlin (had the potential to be a true Celtic great ) suffered a cynical assault by Willie McVie of Clyde which finished his career at the highest level – very sad indeed.

9th 1893: A match was played at Celtic Park between two top Hurling sides on Saturday 9th September 1893, “The Great Hurling Match between teams comprising the Champions of Ireland”.

1978:Celtic beat Rangers 3-1 at Celtic Park – The scorers being Tom McAdam (2) and George McCluskeyPeter Latchford saved an Alex Miller penalty.

10th 1958: Bobby Collins plays his final game for Celtic before being sold to Everton.

1962: Celtic v Real Madrid in a fund-raising challenge match at Celtic Park on Monday 10th September 1962 for Israeli refugees

1985: Jock Stein dies at Ninian Park Cardiff after guiding Scotland to the 1986 World Cup.

1982: Stephen McManus born, Lanark, Scotland

11th 1968: Stevie Chalmers and Bobby Lennox bag five goals each as Celtic defeat Hamilton 10-0 at Parkhead in the first-leg of the League Cup quarter final.
12th 1958: Bobby Collins leaves Celtic for Everton.

1970:Celtic beat Rangers 2-0 at Celtic Park – The scorers being John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch.

13th 1972: Celtic famously beat Leeds at Hampden Park in the 1970 European Cup Semi-Final but they also played in Europe at Hampden on this day in a match against Rosenberg due to fire damage to the Stand at Celtic Park. Celtic won 2-1 thanks to goals from Lou Macari and Dixie Deans – an aggregate win of 5-2.

1984: Double glazing firm CR Smith sign a £500,000 sponsorship deal with Celtic and Rangers.

14th 1974: George Connelly announces his decision to quit football. He would of course play again but his career by now was on its final stretch.
15th 1965:Celtic beat Raith Rovers 8-1 at Starks Park in the quarter final of the League Cup – Joe McBride (3),John Hughes (3),Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone being the goalscorers.
16th 1864: Dan Doyle born in Paisley

1936: Celtic draw with English champions Sunderland 1-1 in a challenge game at Roker Park.

1964: Stevie Chalmers scores five goals in a 6-0 League Cup rout of East Fife at Celtic Park.

1970: Celtic record their biggest ever European victory with a 9-0 European Cup triumph at home to KPV Kokkola of Finland.

17th 1952: Jackie Millsop dies at the age of just 21 in Glasgow Royal Infirmary following a routine operation for appendicitis.

1963: John Hughes hits a hat-trick as Celtic record their first ever victory in European competition with a 5-1 European Cup-Winers Cup triumph at Basle.

18th 1978: Celtic sign Davie Provan for £120,000 from Kilmarnock

1982: Celtic thrashed Motherwell, under new manager Jock Wallace, 7-0 at Fir Park.

19th 1981: Celtic spoil the Rangers party with a 2-0 league victory on the day the Ibrox club officially open their new £4 million Govan stand
20th 1890: Johnny Campbell makes debut and Willie Groves scores six goals as Celtic defeat Battlefield 7-0 in Glasgow Cup

1971: Henrik Larsson born in Helsingborg, Sweden.

1978: Paul Wilson sold to Motherwell in £50,000 deal

21st 1899: Celtic play ‘The Kaffirs’ from South Africa (the first football team consisting of all ‘non-white’ players to have toured & played abroad)

2004: Celtic thrash Falkirk 8-1 in a League Cup tie at Celtic Park.

22nd 1888: Mick Dunbar becomes the first man to score a hat-trick for Celtic as the Bhoys defeat Cowlairs 8-0 in the Scottish Cup.
23rd 1970: Paul Wilson makes a scoring debut as substitute as Celtic defeat Dundee 5-1 in League Cup quarter-final at Parkhead.

1978: Davie Provan make Celtic debut in 3-2 league win at Partick Thistle.

24th 1971: Future Celtic midfielder Craig Burley born in Ayrshire
25th 1961: First airing of the Celtic song: Celtic 4-1 Queen’s Park, Glasgow Cup

1968: Kenny Dalglish makes his competitive Celtic debut as a sub in a 4-2 League Cup win at Hamilton.

1971:John “Yogi” Hughes played his final game for Celtic in a 5-0 win against Airdrie at Broomfield – in total he scored 189 goals in 416 games.

2001: Celtic defeat Porto 1-0 at Parkhead to secure their first ever victory in the Champions League group stage.

26th 1953: Bobby Collins hits a hat-trick of penalties as Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-0 in a league clash at Parkhead.

1959:John Fallon made his debut against Clyde in a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park.

1962: Celtic play their first ever game in European competition but lose the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup match 4-2 at Valencia.

1989:Jimmy Delaney died in his native Cleland aged 75.

27th 1924:Jimmy McGrory scored the first of his many hat-tricks for Celtic in a 4-0 League win over Motherwell – in season 1935/36 he scored 9 hat-tricks for Celtic including three goals in three minutes again against Motherwell.

1989: Dariusz Dziekanowski scores four goals in the 5-4 home win over Partizan Belgrade in the European Cup-Winner Cup. The Bhoys go out on the ‘away goals’ rule.

28th 1918: A crowd of 12-20,000 gather at Celtic Park to watch a baseball game between two sides from the US Military
29th 1965:Bobby Lennox scored his first Celtic hat-trick in a 6-0 away win over Go Ahead Deventer in Holland – Bobby went on to score fifteen hat-tricks in his Senior Celtic career – his last against Dundee in 1975 was the first scored in the newly established Premier Division.

1982: Celtic defeat Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam to progress to the second-round of the European Cup with a 4-3 aggregate triumph.

1984: The Celtic shirt bears a sponsors name for the first time as the Hoops are emblazoned with name of double-glazing firm CR Smith for a 3-2 victory at Dundee.

1993: Radio Clyde’s Tiger Tim (tannoy announcer at Celtic) gets the sack for jokey inoffensive dig at Rangers.

30th 1936: Celtic defeat English champions Sunderland 3-2 in a challenge game at Parkhead.

1944: Jimmy Johnstone born in Viewpark, Lanarkshire.

1992: UEFA Cup: Celtic 3-0 Cologne, 30 Sep 1992 Our only real European high note in the 90’s. Celtic come back to win tie after losing first leg 2-0.
